Here is another item with a puzzle attached. The bottom says Sípek - but first of all, if it is a Borek Sipek design I would expect the accents to be correct. Instead of the Czech "upside down circonflexe", there is an accent aigüe over the S, and an accent grave over the i.
Secondly, the piece is a geometric funfair of circles, squares and octagonal shapes, which is not something I associate with Sipek designs.
Could this be earlier work for VSL? It weighs several kilos, the diameter is 20cm/ 8"

Bořek Šípek, is how it should appear. Doesn't he have Studio Šípek, based in Amsterdam?
-
Not sure if he still does - he used to.
-
Sorry Ivo, Does appear that it has all moved back to Prague.
Might be worth trying this address for further info: info(AT)studiosipek.com
or, having been based in Holland, and Dutch spoken, the phone number is: 00 420 220 514 487
-
Ivo/Marcus, did you progress this at all?
-
Nope, Boris never answered his email and the piece is still standing around in the studio for someone to trip over it.
-
Ivo,
Is this pressed?
regards,
Marcus
-
yes very much so.
-
Hi Ivo,
Eliminate thoughts that I might be about to say Sklo Union
This is possibly French and made at Daum Freres for marketing under the Sevres marque.
I can't remember precise dates but he has worked for them in the past, (from his web-site).
Regards,
Marcus

That would explain not only the massive crystal object but also the absence of a manufacturer's mark! Good sluithing, and an unexpected twist - very much appreciated.

He
Designed objects for:
Alessi, Cleto Munari, Driade Spa, Maletti, Sawaya & Moroni in Italy

Anthologie Quartett, Süssmuth in Germany
Steltman Collection in The Netherlands
Ajeto in The Czech Republic
Scarabas in Belgium
Plus tons more info & bio at http://www.studiosipek.com/
This website must be new(ish) - defo not there when this thread was started as I rem googling him then with difficulty.
-
so it could also have been made by Süssmuth - at least the choice is now down to 2 options.
-
Accent errors are now understandable.
-
Hi,
According to Lesley Jackson's "20th Century Factory Glass" p 203, Sipek's contribution to Süssmuth was a range of drinking glasses called "Glasdans". No mention of other pieces, functional or ornamental.
I still think Daum/Sevres is the candidate for manufacture of this piece.

Marcus

my posting went missing.
The item has been identified by Della as the bottom part of a decanter set made circa 2000 as a Christmas present for the workers at the DSM Chemical plant. She also managed to find the missing top part so I now have it complete.

Can anyone remember who the other poster was, separate thread that vanished completely?
Ivo, any chance of a picture of the whole thing... maybe best to wait until after the hosts have stopped deleting posts.
-
The other poster was Hotglass (ed)
