Title: pink swirl with deeply impressed mark - any ideas?
Post by: josordoni on April 28, 2007, 04:15:22 PM
This is a lovely weight, a rather chalky swirl like a coiled snake, with a deeply impressed mark - I have filled it with talcum powder as it didn't show well in the original photo.

Does anyone recognise this mark?

It came with another that is etched Trout Studio, that I think is USA - does anyone have any info on them?  I found a mention on a gallery site, but nothing more.

Thanks Della!

Funny thing search engines, you can put something in one day and get one thing, then someone else puts much the same thing and gets something different!

Seems not Christine... we shall have to make it up.

What shall we call it?  It could be Y for Ysart of course... >:D

Oh I meant to ask... what is the offhand technique this link mentions??

(shrugs and tries to look offhand herself)

IMO Christine's weight looks a bit like a Mdina or Mtarfa ???

Is the impressed mark definitely a deliberate mark, rather than just an indentation that didn't get ground out because it was deeper than the rest of the pontil scar?

It's most definitely impressed, and like a well squished msmall prunt. My mark is exactly the same as Lynne's, which is why I didn't bother photograhing it  ;D I did vaguely wonder if it was supposed to be a glassblower.

Hi Leni, no doubt it is deliberate, the edges are smooth, and it is a good 1 cm deep.  I talc'd mine because the patterning visible through the clear glass means it is impossible to see the mark on a photo.

Well, to be honest Frank... the paperweight is downstairs, and I am upstairs, and I am guessing  ::)

Like you (aka I) do....

But it is quite deep, much more than 1mm... I'll go and wash out the talc and measure it and report back.

I think I may be thinkiing of Mtarfa, but I don't know if they ever used an impressed mark rather than a label  ???

Brilliant, I found one the same shape as mine and as it was almost certainly bought by the ex's Mother who used to live in Yorkshire that makes sense

I tell you Christine, I knew I had seen it somewhere... but could I think where??

I am so pleased that this little weight can come off the "maybe one day I'll know who the heck you are" shelf.

Just to make sure I didn't get confused:
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-6709 (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-6709)
is Uredale - correct ?

Hi Wuff, yes, that's what I reckon.  Here is their website on the paperweights page (http://www.uredale.co.uk/website/paperweights/Paperweights.htm):  I am not sure if this is a shell or a swirl, but I reckon it must be one of the two.

And the glassblower that is the impressed mark is up the top!
