Title: Czech vase. ID help, please
Post by: Della on July 22, 2007, 01:57:32 PM

Hi all,

I found this absolutely gorgeous Czech vase today in Belgium. I know it is Czech, as it has a label. It is incredibly well made, but a swine to photograph as it has 2 different designs and is a strange shape.

What a gorgeous thing!  I love the way the base echoes the top tier of the vase.  :D  Is that green flashing?

I look forward to finding out more - love it!  Lucky you.  :D

Hi Max,
Yes, it is green over amber. Two sides have cut out circles and two side are cut out diamond shapes with vertical groves. The base is polished flat. I was thinking Exbor, but I stand to be corrected.

Did I say something wrong, David? (Lovely to 'see' you, btw  ;D ) Probably did, I'm good at that  :-[
Yes, something along these lines (http://www.glasshound.com/exborvase_28.html)

Sorry about that, I was actually agreeing with you but accidentally pressed 'Return' when the phone rang ::)

In my limited experience, anything of that nature tends to suggest Novy Bor, but I'm sure Marcus will confirm (and it was him who rang!) ;)

Hi Della,
This is a type of cutting that suggests Borske Sklo, then Crystalex, rather than the Exbor studio. Exbor tended to do small edition work, rather than mainstream production work, which this appears to be. True, there are certain items that left Exbor unsigned, but this has more in common with items such as the Borske Sklo item that Peter photographed a couple of years ago. It is a fairly traditional item, and similar types of cutting have also been attributed to Moser (I suspect often erroneously). It also could have been cut at Crystalex's Kamenicky Senov plant, of which both town and its factories have always been associated with high-quality cut glass ware.
Regards,
Marcus
