Title: My latest haul - help needed
Post by: alexander on November 01, 2006, 06:47:47 PM
Hi, I went to an antique fair last week, lots of nice glass everywhere,
very few paperweights tho. There wasn't much left by the time I got there
except several abstracts by Porsgrund Gifts, I didn't even know they made them!
Cheap glass and not too nicely excecuted so I steered clear of those.

This is what I ended up with tho and i hope someone can point me in the
right direction. Still haven't gotten the Jargstorf book, hoping this week tho.

Here is an image of all three.  (http://www.wilhelmsen.no/glass/paperweights.JPG)

One is chinese, but my wife liked it and it didn't cost much,
the other two I don't know, but i suspect german origin on the one on the
right, the orange on the left is a mystery.

Chinese Weight (http://www.wilhelmsen.no/glass/paperweight.chinese01.JPG)
Is this a new or older weight? The bottom is ground and somewhat
polished. Has an old feel to it but I could be wrong  :D  It's a mini.

This is the orange one, a standard size weight.

This is the one I suspect has German ancestry, but my evidence is flimsy so don't put too much stock on the German link.

For your viewing pleasure and in honour of all hallowes eve, a bizarre
weight i found online - a large weight with a suplhide? faetus inside.
Weird one (http://images.aucland.com/ImgUsers/4/411/41176/4117639/411763946_Big.jpg)

Any thoughts on the makers of these?

Thanks for bearing with me  :D

The last one is not showing up for me.

I saw a couple chinese weights on Ebay recently that were in the same style as the one you have there. I wonder if it's a new cane style because I had never seen them before this year.

I knew it was chinese going in as KevH in an earlier post about a weight
with similar green canes cautioned not to forget those canes as they
were a signature of modern Chinese production.

I paid a bit too much but it's a nice small weight so I'm happy.

I have seen a weight similar to the organge blob one but can't recall
where at the moment, having gone through Selman's excellent site as
well as Farfallas and a few hundred ebay eitems I'm still not closer, altho
I have seen photos of some beautiful weights.

The german one - I thought I'd seen a similar one attributed to a german
maker but now i'm not so sure, the pontil has been ground off and
polished, leaving a smooth concave bottom - something I probably should
have mentioned earlier
Title: Update on the "Weird" piece above
Post by: alexander on November 14, 2006, 12:10:16 AM
Here's an update, I just got Sibylle Jargstorf's Paperweights book,
and in that book I found an almost identical foetus weight to the one above.

The only difference is that mine is standing whereas the one in the book is on it's side.

The glass has a very nice effect and hand made look to it, the foetus is
clear glass covered in gold and encased. A very nice piece.

I've updated the picture of it above - the one labelled weird.

Apparently it was made by Ermanno Nason around 1989!
A very happy camper  :D

Oooh, I like that one. Very unusual.
