Title: Kosta Boda - might this be fake?
Post by: Cathy B on April 25, 2010, 03:20:27 AM
There have been many of these vases (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/KOSTA-BODA-Large-Vase-Mint-Condition-c-a-1980s-1990s_W0QQitemZ300419345435QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_15?hash=item45f2636c1b), all labelled and signed fairly convincingly, on eBay.com.au over the last year or so. It was the volume that suddenly appeared about a year ago that seemed odd, but I wasn't certain.

Maybe it's just the photos, but on mine, most obviously there are more stripes which are more colourful, whereas the ebay vases always seem to have not so many. The cloudy white layer seems to be more opaque, too. Mine has a plastic BODA label, their's is paper, but does that mean anything?

What do you think? Is it just that mine is a particularly good example, or could someone be counterfeiting these? (Or, I don't know. Maybe mine, bought 10 years ago or so, is fake?) Excuse the photos. I couldn't get a good photograph of the signature (well, to be honest I couldn't be bothered dragging out the lights and all... ;))

I'd like to add that the notion that Kosta is a quality producer is mostly based on past reputation.

looking around google I think there's just a lot of variation

for example, first item here

I agree with Taylog, as there is considerable variation and the line is one of Boda's most produced lines. They don't fetch the price that other Vallien pieces bring in and so I'm not sure they would be worth copying.

Thanks everyone! After the Aus-commissioned, Chinese-made carnival and depression glass salt fakes of the last few years, it's been hard to know what they'd try next. (Just to be clear, it was this one in the link here (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300419345435), that I wasn't sure about.)

But yes, the idea that they might have slacked off with the stripes in recent production is a reasonable explanation. I'll just call mine a nice example. (And then sell it.)
