Title: Art Deco ice-men frosted glass bowl and frog with gnomes
Post by: oyemicanto on January 06, 2009, 02:18:08 PM
Hi everyone hope you all had a great new year! Im on here again hoping to pick someones brains(Ive had to leave my brain alone to let it heal!) Ive just aquired this rally unusual bowl and centrepiece frog. The main bowl has dwarves with long beards picking through an icey cavern with axes, and the centrepiece is a large beaker shaped piece again with the icey rocks and 3 gnomes holding on to the sides looking up! I have seen there is also another piece that should go in the frog(sadly I do not have it) Does anyone know any clues to maker/origins? I would be most grateful, thankyou so much!

Hi Pamela, thanks for your input. The amber one you speak of is it in 3 pieces, the bowl, gnome frog and flower frog of a protruding rock face? Nige

Nige, Anja bought from a lady in Dresden, who said Teplitz / Teplice/Bohemia. Yes, she has got a frog with it, but we feel it's a marriage. Photos to follow soon. (I was so sure I had them, but cannot find again) Thank you, RĂ¼diger, if doing that the weekend to come

What a fantastic item I do hope you get an identification soon.I would have a guess at America or Canada perhaps totally wrong. How do the people here feel about leaning towards Burlington glass of Onterio or Sandwich glass of Boston Mass c 1870s.Kind regards,Kay.

My pleasure, Pamela  It's a gorgeous piece, by the way :)

What is happening when you try to upload? If you could note down any error messages and let us know, Anne should be able to help.

Hi Pamela, thanks so much for the pictures they are gorgeous! The scalloped frog thats on top of the gnomes frog may have solved a bit of a mystery for myself and a fellow collector! I will email them and ask permission to upload a picture of the 3 piece set they have in amber(have a feeling the scalloped frog goes on top of the central insert thay have). Watch this space!  Ps glad the "Dorothy" senario was cleared up! I have a very cutting and witty sense of humour-hence why most of my friends have been reduced to tears with my sharp tongue haha!!!!

Hi Pamela here is a picture that I was sent which shows the main bowl, gnomes frog and also the central insert which has the holes for the flowers and a protrudng rock face type structure.we think there maybe would have been something that also fitted on top of that as there is a hole on top? Many thanks

I hope this item will not just drop off the end of the page without an ID. It sure is a wonderful thing, nobody has got back to me about my suggestions for a maker earlier in this topic.I think I like the amber version best. Kay.

Hi everyone again
Just thought I would see if anyone had any more info on this unusual centrepiece?
I wondered if it was European regarding the theme of caverns and elves,I believe there is folklore tale about kobolds down the mines.
I wondered if this bowl was perhaps depicting that tale?
Has anyone a picture of possibly a green version?
Thanks all for your time and input.
Nige

Haven't seen this in any catalogues; however, I did once see an opalescent example (just the bowl & insert, no extra frog or other piece) - the opalescence & general feel were very similar to opalescent S. Reich pieces, so Reich would be my best guess for now.....

Hi
Wow! Thats amazing would have loved to have seen it in opalescence! bet it looked amazing! I actually like the thick oplaescence of Reich,I have also wondered if Riedel did oplaescent pieces as I have seen the common lady on rock lamp base in opalescent.
I have at the moment an opalescent Deco lady which has a thick oplaescence and did wonder if she was Reich?

I found this (not frosted) pink version at a carboot on Malta ;D
Unfortunately only the bowl...
Really a fun pattern :)

Any new thoughts on its origin?

Thanks,
Michael
