Title: Huge Lamp, Late 50s, Czech?
Post by: Ohio on November 07, 2012, 04:44:39 PM
Got this yesterday. It had been in storage for 50 years. According to his daughter the fellow bought it in late 50s & his wife had him remove it after a month because members of her bridge club thought the scenes were a bit much. 19" height (glass only) 9" diameter, Lucite base, 14 lbs weight. Scenic panel 4" width & scenes do not repeat. A bit guady I know. I think its probably a Czech import. Ken

gaudy? it's superb! the scenes look like oroplastic decoration.  I've never noticed them on cased cut to clear glass but I'll have a look round now :)
Can you add three separate blow up pics of the decoration pleeeease? thanks  ;D

thanks  :)
if you search oroplastic and Moser you will come up with some examples of decorations similar to that gilded band - they aren't all Moser though!  but it is something to search on to start with and may throw up something for you.

The wife should have found a new bridge club.  ::)

Sorry, I can't help, but it's something rather special. Not my cup of tea, but it just reeks quality.

Ken, the only items that appear to have similarities that I've been able to find are by Karl Palda.  Unfortunately they are catalogue pictures in the Truitt's Collectible Bohemian Glass 1880-1940 on page 99, and the reproduction pics are not clear enough to see the oroplastic decoration at all.  But, they seem to have a huge range of pieces that are overlaid cut to clear with the gilded frieze.  I think they might be your best bet at least to start a search for a match.  But I've no idea where to find clearly identifiable pictures unfortunately.
Sorry I can't be more helpful but hopefully at least a search avenue to start with.

I'd like to see detail shots of the whole piece including fittings and base...

Frank unfortunately I stocked it in my mall yesterday (an hour away) The pipe, harp, small cap are chrome, the base & finial are Lucite. While its professionally done I am of the opinion its only slightly possible it may be an older base reassembled by someone or its simply a stock 50s import which I am more inclined to believe since I've been around more than a few 50s lamps that had Lucite bases & finials (it was the "rage" in the 50s here in the U.S.) I had more than a few OMGs when I took it to the mall & frankly none were about a "wow" factor...they all centered on which establishment of ill repute I burglarized. I actually thought about keeping it until Tuesday evening when the grandkids showed up & commented in graphic detail about specific anatomical features on the oroplastic panels...DW said "its gone"  when they left. Ken.
