Title: Buy of the week
Post by: pooleandpaperweights on October 14, 2011, 11:55:42 AM
On the board for my other passion, Poole Pottery, we run a thread for ebay, auction, fair, etc buys for anyone to post what they've brought and everyone else to drool over.  It works well there, so thought I'd test run the idea on here, kicking off with my early christmas present to myself in the shape of a missing link in my Selkirk collection, being the full set of 12 days of christmas weights.  All number 110, at £34 each including the postage I really can't see them as expensive :)

Enjoy :)

Post your own buys when you get them, lovely to see what people are buying!

Here are a couple of nice weights we have got off eBay over the last few years. Not bargains, but nice pieces for our collection.

Hi.  It is a Murano butterfly by Galliano Ferro - as you say, stunning. I have a facetted mushroom of theirs from the same era (my guess is 1960s - 1970s, but someone may know better...).

See my Murano project on my website.

Hi everybody,

New week, new 'buy of the week'.

I got these five Selkirk weights in a lot at auction recently. Although an avid Selkirk collector, I did not have any weight of the pond life series (they are early and very limited editions of only 30 each). Now I have five of the eight weights that make up the two series.

The engraving by David Gulland is absolutely stunning and the abstract pond design by Peter Holmes is gorgeous. I am a very happy girl... Also, it did not cost me much as the lot also included two caithness abstracts, the sale of which covers nearly all the auction price (170 incl. commission).

Looks suspicously like the set I don't own plus another?  Very jealous, one of the missing links for my collection!  What numbers of 30 are they?

This weeks buys were 6 strathearn door knobs which are all lovely and a load of books at Stroud auctions for £50, including the out of print Ysart book and some Bob Hall ones as well :)

Post by: SophieB on October 19, 2011, 11:54:48 PM
Hi Ian :hi:,

No need to be jealous  8): it cannot be your missing link as this lot is a combination of weights from both pond life series. If my information is correct, pond life n. 1 consists of: Otter, Great crested grebe, Frog and Trout (and I have both Great crested grebe and Otter - the two weights at the back in my first picture) and pond life n. 2 consists of: Dragonfly, Sedge warbler, Kingfisher and Perch (I have the first three - see the remaining weights in the picture). All the weights are n. 8/30 with the exception of the Sedge warbler one which is n. 2/30. I think somebody bought both sets but they got divided up.

Interestingly, a few weeks before this lot was offered at auction a single weight from the pond life series was offered on Ebay: the frog. I was travelling abroad and my access to the internet was quite random; so I did not manage to bid (I might not have got it anyway). However, the frog was n. 8/30. In all likelihood, it was part of the same set. Somebody, somewhere has just acquired 'my' frog  ;D...

By the way, I saw the Strathearn doorknobs, they looked good. Well done!!

Hi Alan,

It is a little late but I have been meaning to ask about the two weights you posted:

1. Jim Brown? (or is it a very good Bacchus?)

2. 19th c. Saint Louis? (rather than 19th c. Baccarat)

I like the Brown/Bacchus best...

Congratulations to you both to getting a nice collection together.  Many years ago, before Ebay and on line autions, I struggled to put together a set of the twelve Murano birthsigns and I know what a great feeling it is to keep adding weights until you get that elusive full set.
By the way, have you seen the film the BBC made at Caithness in 1966, Colin Terris has just arrrived and is setting up his copperwheel engraving studio but there are interviews with some of the designers including David Gulland and a sequence of Paul Ysart working with his 15 year old apprentice Peter Holmes.
Happy collecting !

Trying to, 'get the set' can be a slippery slope though....

Some years ago, and loving the vibrant colours, I decided to collect the, 'complete set' of Caithness Moonflowers in all the different colourways and editions.

Over forty so far.

Just to put me out of my misery, anybody have the definitive answer as to how many styles they actually made (it's complicated by the fact they often seem to have been used for, 'test pieces' to try out faceting techniques and suchlike!)?

They do look nice on a shelf above the curtains though.....

Hi all,

To Dave:
Many thanks for the kind support... Yes, collecting prior Ebay and on-line auctions must have been a totally different world... I have never seen the BBC footage that you mention but have heard of it. I will have to try and get hold of it...

To Graham:
Yes, it can be a slippery slope. Hopefully, with a small set of eights weights, I should be OK - there is only three more to go (or am I just kidding myself?).

To Ray:
Oh, I like these rings. Nice complex canes... Great buy.

This thread was really a good idea...

That was in connection with the number of Caithness Moonflower designs/colours.

In his Encyclopaedia of Caithness Glass Paperweights (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Encyclopaedia-Caithness-Glass-Paperweights-First/dp/0956928609) Andy lists 27 paperweights actually named Moonflower. There are more related designs (like Windfall and Moonbeam). I have 7 more "Moonflowers" in my database - commemorative or commissioned weights. Then, as you mentioned, there are numerous examples around on which cutting or facetting has been tested ... plus a large number of seconds on ebay, which may have gotten this rating due to small deviations from the original colouring. Even if not rated a second, the long production time will have resulted in small colour variations: this raises the question - what's a new colour, what's just a minor change? With 40 different Moonflowers you certainly have a lot - but, I guess, there will never be an "official" statement, how many designs exist.
Title: Re: Buy of the week
Post by: pooleandpaperweights on October 22, 2011, 06:51:08 PM
I once had 3 Selkirk Partridge in a pear tree weights.  All 3 where different sizes, one was around an inch larger in height and width than the other, so don't think you should count slightly different colours of what should be the same colour as different colours, if that makes sense!

Title: Re: Buy of the week
Post by: tootingpf on October 22, 2011, 06:57:06 PM
Many thanks for that!

Yes, I think i may be on a fools errand with the Moonflowers.  There seem to be certain 'base' colours (blue/green/purple) with consistent colours (orange/red/green/blue) splurged on top.  Given, however, that they're inherently a bit random, the amount of each colour can completely change the 'look' of the weight (hence the number of 'duplicates' that I have).

I think I'll just buy a longer shelf and carry on!!

Graham

Hi chezza, welcome to the Board,

When you show your pics, if you would like information about any of the weights, please start a new thread for each one, otherwise things get confused too easily with mixed replies. Also, please try to keep threads to a maximum of four or five per day.

Hi Sophie.  Regarding my earlier post (reply 2), the left hand paperweight is a (very nice) Bacchus, and the right hand one an antique Baccarat.

Nice 'little' lot. Well done  :hiclp:

I have to try and ID the lot before going to bed:

Top: Trabucco
Middle (left to right): Ebelhare, Ebelhare, Murano
Bottom (Left to right): Rosenfeld, Ebelhare (his Bacchus period), Jim Brown (not sure of this last one, though...)

Nice job. It is Jim Brown, from 2001. I wasn't sure if the one is Murano or not. Was leaning that way as it was unmarked and unfamiliar to me but it is a nice piece and the price was right. Was one I should have passed on.

I won a lot of 19 paperweights at auction a couple of weeks ago, bidding from an image, but only picked them up Friday. I knew that most were Murano and Chinese, but there were 3 old millefiori weights, and what I thought was a Vasart or Strathearn spoke lurking at the back of the group. I got a nice surprise when I collected them (see below) - so definitely a good buy!

Hi Sophie

As much serendipity as coup...

All three millefiori are Old English.  Top left is Richardson, top right is one of the group I call 'OE2' in my various articles ( for those not familiar with Old English paperweights there is a brief ID overview on my website here (http://www.pwts.co.uk/pages/OE%20Identification.htm)). I am pretty sure that the bottom left is by another unknown Old English maker, from whom I have at least one similar weight with lots of rows of good millefiori. I need to measure the density of all 3 at some point.

On a better note, lot 543 at Brigthwells in Leominster today, mine for £90 hammer.  Now, who wants to say what PP the perthshire is bottom left?

I can see a PP1 and what looks like a deacons weight, only mystery is the green one in the top row!

Brought the selkirk glass picture frame, ebay item 320934953000, for £2.60  :)  It isn't signed, but has a selkirk glass engraving sticker, instead of the normal selkirk sticker.  Wonderd if anyone knew if this was selkirk or not for definate?

In the 2002 and 2003 Selkirk catalogues there are different products by "Selkirk Glass Engravers", designed by Fiona McDiarmid:
1. Candlelights
2. Candleholders
3. Stemmed dishes
4. Shot glasses
5. Paperweights (in 3 sizes) - see attached image
6. Low bowl
No image frame mentioned, let alone depicted - so I would very much appreciate if you could post some better images (than on ebay) incl. of the sticker.

There were 4 designs:
- two "Celtic inspired"
- one "Jazz" modern freestyle arrangement
- one "MacKintosh inspired"

If you "blow up" the MacKintosh inspired design to encompass the image frame it indeed looks very similar.

£2.60 bargain I think.  I can see it getting a wedding photo in it in 6 weeks time (we hope, for my mum....)

Hi. The weight is a Clichy scramble.  These vary enormously from ones with nearly all small cane fragments, through to ones that are nearly all full pieces of cane.  Mildawg's is intermediate - but you can see a Clichy white/pink rose cane in it.

Alan
Title: Re: Buy of the week
Post by: mildawg on July 18, 2012, 12:20:18 PM
Alan is correct, it is Clichy.  I only have one pic that was taken with my phone and have tried to resize and attached.  Also cropped a section to attach.  It does have five or six rose canes or parts there of in it and some other nice full canes.

As Alan mentioned there is the white/pink, there is also a white/purple rose on the side that can't be seen.  Next to the white/pink rose there is a full pink/green rose and is what I believe some refer to as a double rose (rose within a rose), on the outside edge there is a quarter of a all pink rose and where the light is shining there is a quarter pink/green.

No signature cane fragments that I can find,  I keep looking hoping one will show up ;D

The image you have sent me of the photo frame, was a development idea that Selkirk had but never really took off. The glass came from Italy, Selkirk just engraved it.

I purchased this Monart perfume bottle recently for a rock bottom price of £1.21. There is damage to it, 2 cracks to neck and stopper stuck but displays nicely. I think the canes are Salvadors rather than Paul's but if some one knows different, please let me know.

Yes, those canes are seen quite regularly in Ysart Brothers period work and very infrequently (if at all) in Paul's, so personally I classify them as Salvador canes.

Hi,  I bought this last week at an auction. The auction house had shown a picture of a mixed 5 paperweight lot but left this inside its box!!! I've re-entered the other weights in the next auction but fortunately no one else on-line seems to have bothered to ask for a photo of the Whitefriars weight. I paid a reasonable price against someone in the room but still way below value for this beauty.

Cheers,

Tony

PS. It's a 1980 PG103 random florette cane double garland BUT with the very rare ILN centre cane ( Illustrated London News). This exact design is listed by Brian Slingsby in his guide as a design trial with very few made or even a "one off". Well definitely NOT a one-off now.

I think that's very beautiful but my curiosity lies in why they would produce a one off for the Illustrated London News?  I can imagine these might have been commissioned to be given as presents to Advertising Clients of the ILN.  I would have thought they might have asked at least for a handful to be made for senior clients if not more.  Or maybe they were only a one-off or two-off as they could have been made as trials for a possible gift  but not bought by the ILN in the end?

Maybe a clue in the date m Whitefriars closed in 1980 the place was in a bit of a mess at the end maybe they were a commissioned run that came just before they pulled the plug.... maybe?

Hi flying free,
I'm sorry I've caused some confusion as I didn't tell the whole story. Brian's guide on Whitefriars says that a number of different designs were trialled for the ILN weight which was finally issued. He lists this one based on the PG103 and states that the actual issued design  was based on the P25 weight or "weight within a weight". Brian doesn't list any other trials but I also have an ILN trial weight based on a PB302 "petal" design.Whitefriars would quite often make a series of different options before deciding on the design to be issued.

Brian doesn't give the number of ILN weights issued in the P25 format but they can't have been many as I have never seen one outside of Brian's guide.

I hope this makes things clearer.

Hi,

Hi Tony.

I think several people (including me) asked what was inside the box, and knew what it was. If no one else had known you'd have got the lot for a song, whereas there was quite a bit of internet and room bidding.  I just dropped out of the online bidding when it got beyond what I though was the right price for an unusual Whitefriars in the present climate!

Hi Alan,
thanks for dropping out when you did. I still rate it as underpriced. It's a good job we each have our own reference points for these things or life would be boring. Did you see the Whitefriars "petal" PB302 on German e-bay a couple of weeks ago that sold for 600 euro. One and a half times what even I thought it would reach.

One of the weaknesses of being a collector is letting the heart rule the head when rare items in your special interest area come up. But then quality and rarity costs. I always reckon to balance astute buying of some weights with having to "invest" in others.  However, if price was the only consideration then a recession can generally be a good time to build a collection.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony

I agree about the quality and rarity point - if you want a good antique Baccarat carpet ground or bouquet, or a top quality Clichy or Saint-Louis piece, you will have to pay a lot. The effect of the  recession has been to push up the prices of the choice pieces - but in some areas it has led to a fall in prices - so as you say, a good time to build your collection. A typical Baccarat pansy can be picked up for half what it might have cost ten years ago, for example, and many Whitefriars are well below their peak prices.  But it is a patchy effect - some makes seem to be unaffected.

Not 100% sure this was my "Buy" of last week as some of the others were better but certainly the "Pleasant Surprise of the week".

I picked up some auction lots I'd bought and as usual apart from the one(s) you want there are often others in the lot.
On collection I checked the ones I'd wanted and just packed the others straight in to a box.

On later inspection this one, just described as another paperweight and in the on line photo was a top down shot as my first one below although more distant and out of focus so I'd no idea what it was.
I picked it up and recognised the label as Isle Of Wight, turned it over and to my surprise find it signed "Michael Harris Isle of Wight 1974"

I don't know a lot about Isle of Wight glass but I gather a Michael Harris signed piece is fairly rare and as he moved back from Malta to start Isle of Wight glass in 1973 this is fairly early?

Well done Tony

I bought my Whitefriars ILN weight at Roseberrys many years ago and was very pleased to get it for £360

Hi Roy,
I'm curious about the design background of your ILN weight. Is it a P25 or another of these "trial" designs? By the way I finally added a large Owl to the collection and also a black swan.

Tony

Hi John,
If your neighbour has a good Whitefriars glass collection including paperweights would she mind if you took some photos? Always nice to see other examples as there is so little coming onto the market these days.

Hi Nick,
really good find. As with other artworks a signed piece will be desirable. Pity it usually takes the artist's demise to realise the value! Don't you just love those occasional nice surprises when you buy a "job lot"? Kind of makes your day!!!

Hi Tony

Mine is the same as your latest find and I think the one they settled on for limited production. I must admit I have never seen your other IEA before, so more than likely a trial weight.

Well done with your Owl and swan

I have found an IEA cane for the magic box

Hi Roy,
if we now have 3 examples based on the random garland PG103, do you think Brian's guide is mistaken in suggesting that the P25 was the basis for the issued weights? Seems possible, unless Brian has first hand information to the contrary. Who has a P25 ILN weight other than the one illustrated in Brian's guide book?

Cheers

Tony

PS Roy I am travelling down to Brighton on Tuesday 4th September. Would it be convenient to call in and view "the collection"?

An IEA cane? Does it relate to the Paul Ysart IEA weights do you think?

Hi Alan

So I don't know the difference between IEA & ILN.

Hope you didn't get too excited at your great age

Well spotted.

Last weeks buy which arrived today.  Signed by Chris Buzzini 94, 33 of 40, came from Byrne's auction last week at what I thought was  very reasonable £500 hammer?

At a car boot sale this morning spotted this at the exhorbitant price of £6 picked it up and the stall holder says " nice that, pity it's not an original".
He saw my slightly puzzled expression and said "you know, pity it's not an old French one, its a copy"

"Yes such a shame" says me, "I'll give you a fiver".
Deal done paperweight in bag and away I go.

Ysart brothers 1946-56, a pretty nice example I think, still shame it's not an original ;D

Below are a couple of images of a Salvador Ysart 3D Butterfly I have just acquired.  The (few) others that I have seen had wings made by pulling millefiori canes to shape: has anyone else seen an example with plain coloured wings?

I have seen a couple of other Salvador Ysart plain-wing butteflies.

An example with orange wings was shown by Bob Hall in CPC Newsletter 75 and also in his book "World Paperweights ...", page 129. However, that one may have had the wings made from a simple "tube cane" as there are smudges of other colour visible.

Hi frank

Sorry if we got you confused. Tony bought a Whitefriars weight with the initials ILN in the centre

ILN is illustrated London news.

I confused matters by telling him I had found a cane for my collection with I E A in it but I meant to say ILN . Alan added his comments referring to the initials I E A found in Ysart weights.

I am sure you are now even more confused. I should go to confused . Com and they will sort it out.

Very nice addition Alan.  Like the Allan Scott piece very much as well.  I got my start in collecting sulphides from the Midwest (US) and have always liked "creatures" in weights.

Not a real recent buy but the whitefriars partridge and pears weight recently posted reminded me of this one.  A little different take.  Thought best to post it here.

Made by Jim Davis in 1988 in limited numbers.  Not sure how many were made but this one is hot stamped and script signed and marked Christmas 1988 no. 6.
