British & Irish Glass / Opinion Sought - whether to publish John Ford Lecture
« Last post by neilh on March 11, 2024, 09:37:23 PM »
Hi folks,

I am approaching the start of the first draft on my book on Percival Vickers and am selecting material.
I have a small pamphlet dating to 1883 which I acquired from a bookseller in Cumbria - a lecture by John H Ford on glassmaking for the layman. It's a nice little thing with some basic sketches, no major revelations. It would be a good way to illustrate what was taking place in a British glass house at the time.

I'm thinking about adding it as an Appendix chapter. As far as I can gather from Worldcat, only one other copy is known, in the University of Maastrict. There is an archive relating to John Ford in Edinburgh I think, which was delved into by Jill Turnbull for her works on Scottish glass. I have one of her books, "From Goblets to Gasslights"... and I don't see it in there.

Does anyone know if pamphlet has been previously published in another glass book?
Anyone even aware of it?
Would you like to see it in a book (transcription + sketches) ?

Any opinions welcome...

Glass / Re: Scottish coloured glass windows - any hints?

 :) Hello and welcome.
You'll find lovely stained glass windows in most Scottish houses of this age. And in old tenement closes, where you'll also find glorious old ceramic tiles on the walls.
Sadly, I have never been able to find out where they were made, or by whom.
I'm just very grateful to have some myself, in Dundee.

Glass / Scottish coloured glass windows - any hints?
« Last post by kit.allen on March 11, 2024, 12:09:57 PM »
Hi folks,

We have a house in a small village in Southern Scotland. It was built around 1850. Of interest is our hall window, which has a rather nice stained glass effect with blue and red panels. See attached photo.

Over the weekend, I visited a friend in his new house in Motherwell. It's late Victorian, and to my surprise, it has two near-identical windows.

I can't find out anything from searching online and Google Images, so I wondered if anyone else might have any knowledge about these windows? We're about 50 miles apart so I wondered if they might have been manufactured in the Central Belt or nearby.

Any information or historical context would be really interesting to know. Thanks!

The Winterthur Museum has similar example, only differs in the pattern molding in the bowl. The link address way too convoluted for me her. This link will take you to the collection site, click on the glass section and enter1974.0148 in the search bar, should pop right up.museumcollection.winterthur.org/index.php#.Y1cHFS2ZP1x

Bonnet glass will not get the results you want at Winterthur or CMOG. better results with "salt mold blown" "Monteith" maybe a handful of results. To see all their bonnet glasses simply "salt" and "monteith" you will have to wade through 59 pages of mostly pressed lacy.

Well said chopin-liszt, I'm with Ekimp on this one.

This forum is for glass.
Not for the incredibly complex vagaries of hallmarks on metalwork, which can often be added to glass long after it was made and in a completely different place.
It's not really anything that is of any use or interest to us.
And when silver gets stuck onto bits of glass, you start getting silver collectors interested in the thing instead of the glass and it can put prices out of our reach.
It's a completely different category. And not one we specialise in, just some of us know a little bit around the edges.
No one person can be a specialist in everything.

Google and other internet sources do not suffice for real life experience and knowledge obtained from our elders.

I've spent more than enough time defending the obvious.
All I can say is that I'm glad you aren't responsible for authenticating the antiques at my shop!!
