Title: Glass Vase Need Help
Post by: shell59 on September 15, 2012, 02:48:46 PM
Hi,

I have a large Orange black and red I believe vase that is very heavy.  The design is unusual.  I was wondering if anyone would know anything about it.  There are no stickers or signatures.  Thanks much for any help.

Michelle

Is the base finish quite rough?
A clear picture of the base would help a lot. :)
It looks like contemporary Chinese glass.

Hi,

The bottom is completely flat and it is completely black.  There are no marks or scratches just straight and flat.

Thanks,

Michelle

Is it shiney? Matt? Inbetween?
Does it have concentric rings in it, has it been flattened on a surface while hot, or has it been polished to a high degree when cold?

We really do like looking at bottoms here! ;)

Hi,

Here are pictures of the bottom and an upside down view.  It does appear to be very polished because the reflection of my picture on the wall was showing up on it while I was taking the pic.

Thanks,

Michelle

I can't quite make these images out - is there an "edge", where it goes from flat to curved?

It could be Brazilian. Looks better than Chinese glass.

Good point - but the Chinese glass is improving, the finishes are improving, the techniques are improving - all the time - I believe they have imported a lot of Polish masters to teach.
It's not too much of a contemporary Chinese shape really, is it?

Is the foot applied? That's not a common feature of Chinese glass.

Hi,

Yes it does have an edge, an it is very, very heavy.

Thanks,

Michelle

I reckon we should be looking at Kane's suggestion rather than Chinese.
It is large and bright, isn't it? :)

Yes it is very large, bright, heavy and colorful.  If it is Brazilian is there somewhere you could look up info on that? What exactly does that mean?

It looks complex, colourful and bright, contemporary studio sort of thing. Romania maybe? It is almost sort of Ioan Nemtoi (ish).

Is there a signature anywhere around the bottom edge close to the base?

Nope there are no signatures at all or marks like that of any kind.

Forget Ioan Nemtoi, sorry. It is not remotely in his league!
Romanian, perhaps, even Lithuanian?
Michelle, the general opinion is that it is brand spanking new, in a style (large, brightly coloured, very heavy,) that is currently appearing from many, many different places all over the world.....

It definitely isn't new, vintage maybe, it has been around quite awhile.

Perhaps the last 10 years or so?
That might be enough time to get a bit of age-related wear on it, particularly if it's a soft sort of metal (the glass) used to make it.
I really do not believe it's any older than that.
Certainly far more recent than retro, definitely not vintage.
I suppose it depends what you mean by the words!
I'd put "retro" on things from '50s-70s, others might include the '80s.
Vintage, I'd put around the deco period, '30s-40s.
(The '50s are bad kitsch and best forgotten!)

Maybe 70's or 80's then it's retro I guess.

LOL...the vintage/retro debate.

It just looks put together to well for it to be Chinese. And if it were Chinese I would suspect it would be more 'garish' in the colours used.

The colours in this seem to blend quite well and the foot on the piece really sets it off. It just seems more thought has been put into than most chinese churned out pieces.

I am not too familiar with Brazilian makers of glass, although I have seen pieces about and they are very well made and quite colourful without looking 'chinese cheap'.

But then again, you can't discount some other countries that have produced glass from around the 80's. it is quite a nice and bold piece. The colours slightly remind of a Vittoria Ferro piece I own.

Thanks, I well check into Brazil glass.  Do you know if Brazil Glass is heavy because that vase sure is a heavy one.  It is also tall.  It seems to be well made there are a few of those tiny little bubbles you see in blown glass. Not knowing much about glass I don't know if that makes it cheaper or not.  Thanks for your comments I love learning about all this.
