Title: Scandinavian Vase - Clear with etched lines -ID = Ernest Gordon for Afors
Post by: Flypogger on May 21, 2009, 05:00:38 PM
Hi - was helping out with an estate and found this nifty vase - didn't have much time but got off a quick shot - clear, about 8 inches tall, with etched lines that remind me of a globe, and a few small squares etched in also. There is a signature, but I couldn't really make it out - looked kinda like

Gruet gordon go 1042 afoe

written in script on bottom. I am guessing Scandinavian because there was a fair amount of Scandinavian glass, enamel and other bric a brac, and most of the stuff in the home dates from the 50s-60s. Also, here's an external link to a slightly bigger picture

Thanks for any help!

On a different note, I was wondering what the etiquette was for posting help on glass identification. I have been collecting for about 15 years, and go to at least 2 or 3 estate/tag/garage sales a week, so I have a few mystery pices of glass that have so far avoided classification. is it OK to post a bunch under one topic, or each individually? Again, thanks for any help!

Pete

Hello Pete, if you ask about one item per post then the threads stay nice and simple for us slower folk.

A guess as to your signature would be Ernest Gordon who designed wonderful glass for the glass makers Afors.

Near the top of the screen is a search box, if you enter his name there you will then see a list of threads on this forum with more (hopefully) relevant info.

Nice looking vase you have there.

John.

If Gareth sees this he can confirm if it is Ernst Gordon or not.

Maybe an administrator can add Afors and/or Gordon to the heading????

I seem to remember from another thread on the message board that Ernest Gordon (who was English I think) worked in Sweden for many years and that the Swedish spelling of his name would have been Ernst. So it is probably a good idea to search for info using both spellings.

Pete,

Yep, I'd go for Ernest Gordon - signature probably reads "Ernest Gordon GS 1042 Afors". [The 1### numbers are GS, and tend to either be engraved lines or cut glass].

I've not seen this one before, but typical of his stuff, a lot of his bits weren't done in big runs - nice piece, good find.

Gareth

As always, if you ever decide to sell please let me know.

I must correct myself... Although he was English, and from what I learned from Gareth, he was the only
Englishman in the Swedish glass industry during that period, his name is always spelled Ernest, not Ernst as I spelled it previously. I knew that, just did not pay attention to my typing.

I don't want Gareth to think I was not paying attention!!!   ::)

Here's another in the same design - GS 1041

There's be another one in the series, he liked sets of three.

Craig - don't worry about the spelling, I'm sure I've seen bits signed Ernst, I understand in Sweden it's a much more common spelling than Ernest.

I said they travel in threes - here's the other one - the largest is 10" tall, GS 1043

So do I....I am warming more and more to Scandinavian glass, and these are so simple yet stylish.....gosh will I really have to start collecting glassware as well as animals.....will John still want to live here if I do.....yes,  he'll build another shelf!

Did Afors do anything in this sort of style in coloured glass as well, or was it always clear?

All their engraved stuff is on clear (or rather I've not found any exceptions) but he did a lot of coloured cased
