Title: Georgian glass / German Roemer ???
Post by: Novasonic on October 09, 2012, 07:07:26 PM
Hi

I found these glasses the other day - what looks to me like a small 18th century Georgian era glass (is it wine, Gin, or Cordial) ? It is 4" high with a broken pontil scar and circular striations on the bowl - can anyone confirm this and give me a rough date at all for it ?

Also - what looks to me to be a Roemer type glass - it's only 3.5" tall with nice prunts on it - I thought maybe late 19th century ???

Thanks - this is not usually my area of "glassing" hence I am guessing a bit here !

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

i don`t know anything about the first one, but the second one should be the roemer Form Nr. 491 made by the glassworks of Theresienthal, Bavaria, Germany. If you are interested in more information don`t hesitate to email me or visit my website http://www.roemer-aus-theresienthal.de (http://www.roemer-aus-theresienthal.de).

Thank you for your response - Can you provide a rough date of production for this piece & it's rarity or value ?

Thanks Rob

The roemer 491 has been listed in catalogues around 1890 and 1903. Today you will have to pay for an undecorated item like yours 10 -20 Euros.

Hi, the dram glass could well be Georgian.  Is it lead glass?  Does it have good horizontal striation?  Can you see any vertical tool marks in the bowl?  What colour is it (Georgian glass tends to be greyer than modern glass)?

Oldglassman (Peter) collects Georgian drams and is much better qualified to comment on it than am I.

Hi,

yes the bowl has a lot of horizontal striations & there are a few faint vertical (more diagonal up the side) striations, & is definately lead crystal (a nice long lasting ping).  it does have a greyish hue, but only slightly.  base has a few bubbles, thick and not completely round.

I have attached a few more pics.  I guess after reading further it could well be georgian ? but I wonder what period & what kind of glass it is ?

Thanks

Rob

Hi, it sounds and looks Georgian.  Can you supply the bowl rim and foot diameters?  In general the latter should be greater than the former.  To my eyes it looks like a port glass from the mid to late 1700s but Peter will be a better judge.  Most glasses of the period were used interchangeably for different liquids so a port glass wouldn't just be used for port.

Hi Rob, I'd put it later than I said earlier.  There are a couple of similar glasses up on ebay at the moment quoting them as being about 1810.   That's possibly about right but Peter is probably the leading UK expert on Georgian drams so he should be able to confirm.

 HI ,
Cant see a problem with a 1790/1810 ish date for glasses like this which are not what I would call fine table ware, the uses i think can be very varied , personally I would not call it a dram but a small wine or as already suggested for port.having said that its probably 200 + yrs old and for that should be admired and!!!!   used   ;D

cheers
     Peter.

excellent - thank you for all your help.

I feel I have learnt a lot more about glassware of this period - and not bad as I paid 50p for it :o)
