Title: Tapio Wirkkala vase 3570
Post by: Paul C on January 07, 2012, 03:05:57 PM
Hello I just bought an Iittala vase with "Tapio Wirkkala 3570" engraved. I noticed a vertical score on the face of the vase . After a closer look I found 2 more vertical scores but these are between the pleats, hence not so noticeable, unlike the first one which is on one side of a pleat (please see pictures below). I couldn't find any information about this on the Internet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Paul

Welcome to the board Paul.

Not sure what you mean by score (in terms of glass) but the feature in your photos looks like an elongated air bubble, is the score within the glass or can it be felt on the surface?

Thanks John.

It can be felt on the surface...as though someone scored the surface with a knife. I don't know the proper term to describe it (sorry, I am new to glass). It is about 35mm long, and at its widest and deepest point, about 1.5mm wide and 1mm deep.

Regards
Paul

Here is some info on the design: http://www.designlasi.com/en/content/alpina-3570-wirkkala-tapio-en

Is the mark part of the design? I wondered because there is a similar mark in this photo: http://www.marikan-maljakot.com/gallery/maljakot/001345.htm

Many thanks for the links - It looks like similar mark (although the photo is the different side of the vase).

I got an answer from the seller today suggesting this may be a manufacturing flaw but the item was deemed to be sellable by the manufacturer, and I can return the item if I wish ... the problem is, I really like the vase ... but if it is a flaw then have I paid too much for it  :-\

Much vintage glass has manufacturing flaws that might be considered unacceptable today. If the mark is smooth and shiny, it is probably an annealing mark. The fact that it is marked means that it was originally sold as a first quality item.

Perhaps try asking for a partial refund
