Title: Decanter and glasses
Post by: flick on July 31, 2006, 12:58:48 PM
Anyone know where this was made, by whom etc?  I know it's not posh but another find at the charity shop - not many of them over here unfortunately.  And how can I clean the inside curvy bit below the neck?

Big thanks

If it is one of these decanters with a plastic lined stopper (ooooooh I hate those with a vengeance) then ther maker is most probably Oberglas Austria or one of the Empoli factories.

And you can clean it with a flexible bottle brush - you can get them in home-brewery supply shops or in shops with baby supplies (a baby's bottle cleaner).

- or with Magic Balls!

These are commercially available tiny little copper ball bearings that canbe used to swirl around inside decanters. Copper is soft and won't scratch, but is heavy, so it will shift muck. I've said this before, it's great, although puerile, fun going into a shop and asking a young man behind the counter if he has magic balls!

Hi Pat, I found them (and a nice young man to embarrass) in the Conran shop in London. I don't know anywhere else.

The little pot is labelled "Historic House Collection", telephone number 01295 750100, fax 01295 750800.

Another decanter question - I use tightly rolled up kitchen roll to "wick" moisture out of a decanter after it has been washed - is there any other better way?

That's what I do as well. Can't think of another way.

It says Men and Girls at the top. Just nothing for women though - yes I know women seem to like being called girls these days. It was very different in the old days of womens lib.

But has anyone thoroughly tested these balls, do they cause any damage etc.???

Used them for years with reasonably good results and no sign of any damage to glass.  Don't know if that equals 'thoroughly tested'.  I think we need more 'testers'.  Any 'Girls' or men prepared to give them a go?

I use them. They shift stuff that can be shifted. No damage as yet. I'd be careful about shaking them violently inside very thin glass.

No better solution than the wick, apart from additionally rinsing with deionised/distilled water last, and turning the wick up-side-down after a while, to make use of the dry end.
