Title: possible Maltese owl. ID = Mdina
Post by: Paul S. on October 30, 2014, 06:42:56 PM
having dabbled a little in Mdina etc. some years back, this looks to have the right sort of blue and silver chloride mix that I seem to remember, although this is presumably an item made recently.
Almost 3.25" (80 mm) tall, and markless.             Is it Maltese and am I correct in saying it's an owl? :)

Yes to Mdina but not recent, Sue might have a better idea of around about when. It seems to be quite a hard pattern to find this one, I have only ever seen small items made in it - animals and posy sized vases.

If it looks like an owl and quacks like an owl...

very nice Chris  -  thanks for posting  -  they do make for a very attractive colour mix.          So does appear they are probably a fair bit older than I first thought.

chriscooper's owl is a completely different decor to the one Paul posted, it's one in which a rib mould has been used to incorporate the silver chloride salts internally.

The one Paul showed has a mosaic-like surface decor of silver chloride effects, and as John said, it is a hard decor to find, and only ever found on very small pieces. I'm not sure of the date, perhaps mid-late '80s/early '90s. I don't think it was continued for any great length of time, given the scarcity of this decor.

It is mostly found on owls. I have a little squat pot vase, about 2" tall and 3" wide.

A very big thanks Sue  -  you are such a store-house of information on this subject :)

This design apppears to be contemporary with another produced on similar small items. It's a surface decor, of a matt pink backgound , with deeper pink spots and stretched blue splodgy bits. I think it's really, really horrible, but it's even scarcer than this lovely patchwork pattern in teal blue and mirrored yellow.
I'll get a pic of my little squat pot, and one of the horrible matt pink thing. I do have an example of it. It would show the shape of other things which might have the really attractive design on.
No light atm.

That's the same shape as my horrible pink thing, I have an owl I don't need, in blue and yellow, with paper label, although the decor isn't the best. I'll send you some pics when I take them. ;)

I think I might have found one of these cute little vases that match all the Mdina Owls I have.
Just over 2.5" tall and beautifully rounded with a label and signature.
Some photos for the record.

My little group has grown now,  and I really do like these.
I have since discovered that these were made by Raymond Sultana  (who is now at Valletta glass). I met him when on holiday in Malta this year.
I also include a picture of the little lovebirds he made in this colour-way... the only ones in existence. Raymond owns them, not me, sadly.
