Title: id request for pink pressed sticks - Inwald or Rudolfova SU? ID = Riedel
Post by: Paul S. on November 15, 2010, 08:56:34 PM
Just thought that one of the pressed glass experts might recognize this pattern before I wade into the 'Master Books' :D
Bottoms have the flat ground/polished outer rims, and tragically there has been damage to one of the tops, and although nothing is missing the gluing job hasn't been carried out too expertly.      Impressive, and I hadn't been aware of seeing them before, and despite the damage couldn't pass them up.    They stand at about 290mm/almost 11.5 inches, so quite tall.    Grateful if anyone does know the design, and thanks for looking. :)

They are very similar to the pattern Sl/2592 shown in the pre-1958 Rudolfova Hut' catalogue on the SkloUnion CD - but those are given as 180mm with two tiers on the base. I wonder if these are from the same stable? The higher size could account for the three tiered base... perhaps earlier Inwald production even?  Pamela or Glen would most likely know for sure.

thanks Anne   -  at work now so can't do much looking at all  -  but appreciate your suggestion and do hope either Pamela or Glen able to assist if they have the time to take a look. :)
cheers    Paul S.

have now managed to look at the page in question on the CD, and agree similarity  -  differences seem to be........ where the 'U' is attached to the base (sorry, not very obvious from my pic.) and the unequal steps of the actual pan (on mine) - whereas the three steps in the Sl/2592 appear symetrical.   Guess we must carry on looking Anne :)

browsing thru the Andy McConnell/Millers 20th Century Glass - I see that page 56 carries a blue version of what appears to be the same 'stick'.    The caption comments that the designer is unknown but the maker, reputedly, was Riedel, and the date given is c. 1930.    Is this the Riedel as in Josef Riedel, and is it possible to see any catalogue images? :)

Sorry Paul, I missed this while we were away in Hongkong to see our first grandchild  :baby:   :rah:

Unable too to find a closer match than Rudolfova for your candle-holder - will keep looking. No Riedel catalogues of that period known here, I'm afraid.

Hello Granny, and our congratulations on this wonderful event  (also on your more senior status)
Unless I'm losing the plot Pamela, my sticks appear identical to the supposed Riedel example shown in the Miller's book  -  the reason being that both have a 'three tiered' pedestal  -  unlike the Rudolfova example which has only two. :hi:

Paul, it might be worth dropping Andy an email and asking where his attribution came from. He is a member here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php?action=profile;u=67

I notice that his email is not shown  -  so unless anyone has this and cares to send me an 'off board' message with the details  -  I will try to locate tomorrow by phone. :)

thanks Anne  -  I wasn't up that late so didn't see your note until this morning, by which time I had already found it from way back earlier this year.    Our very friendly and knowledgable contributor from 'somewhere on the south coast' had included it when we had been discussing Andy's glass.    I will continue this evening, and my thanks to both of you. ;) :fc:

That was early for me Paul, I was in bed by midnight - most unusual for me!  :thud:

Look forward to hearing what Andy has to say.

Paul, did you get a response from Andy about these?

Hello Anne   -   I did in fact send an email to Andy McConnell on 23/12 - although regrettably didn't receive a reply, so I guess he was unable to help.     I have been meaning to try the Glass people at the V. & A., so will give them a shout, and include a picture. :)

no, in fact I hadn't seen this one rosie  -  I don't purchase thru ebay, and have never really acquired the habit of looking, at least on a regular basis.     Early last week I sent an email to Riedel in Austria  - or at least I thought I had, because the following day my email bounced back.    So late last week I phoned the London outlet of Riedel to ask for the correct Austrian email address, and they very kindly offered to forward my email and pictures to Austria, which they have now done.     Now I'm just waiting for a reply with, hopefully, a positive id that these sticks are from this particular factory.     I rather prefer my pinkish examples to this brown one :)   I will keep you informed of progress, and in the meantime my thanks for your heads up on this one, and although I haven't replied on the trellis bowl, I have seen your communication today, and hope to reply tomorrow. :)

Very pleased to say that I have now received a reply from John Franklin (at the London outlet for Riedel Glass), as follows:

""Dear Paul,
I have just received confirmation from a Riedel expert in Austria that your candlesticks are indeed Riedel, year of production around 1900.
I do hope this helps.
Regards,  John"".

Must admit that I am a little surprised that the date is quoted at being that early - but nonetheless my sincere thanks to John Franklin for his time and trouble spent on this matter for me. :)

Sorry, but I've got a question...  did Riedel make pressed glass?  A knowledgable person/seller (with the same candlestick) has told me he's got serious doubts about this attribution.

Thank you for your input.

Edited to add:  It seems Riedel did make pressed items.  There is mention of it in "The Legend of Bohemian Glass" and here -- http://www.prazskagalerie.cz/en/news/from-editorial/luxury-for-everyone-chapters-from-history-and-present-of-art-crystalware-6.  Yet I'd still like to question the attribution.

hello Anik.         Subsequent to my post dated 14th April, I had not queried this item further, as had assumed that the confirmation from more knowedgable people than myself had resolved the matter  -  although as I commented at the time, the quoted date of  'around 1900' had rather surprised me.     I am neither an expert on Riedel, or early C20 Austrian pressed glass, so regret I am personally unable to take this matter further.     As you will see from the earlier stages of this thread, I did email Andy MacConnell back at the beginning of this discussion, but regrettably, for whatever reason, he declined to comment, although I think from memory the pair of similar sticks shown in the Miller's book for which he was editor, are attributed to Riedel.    Is your source able to offer proof of their reasons for suggesting these are not the Austrian factory??   after all, when we have 'serious doubts', we must assume there are good reasons for them. :)

Maybe I should have written "I'd like to gently question this attribution".  Has the candlestick since been found with a label, or in a catalogue?

Teaches me not to stick my big nose into areas I know nothing about.  Again, my apologies.(http://serve.mysmiley.net/ashamed/ashamed0001.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

I'm not aware of any comments from anyone since my note on the 14th of April  -  and I have certainly not been aware of seeing these sticks in any literature anywhere (apart from the Miller's example already quoted)  -  but I guess there is always the chance that positive attribution may yet be found  -  i.e. an example with label or whatever.      However, I think that Pamela has commented already that she is unaware of any existing Riedel catalogues, so we may be at the end of the road for now, although we can 'leave the door open' should more information come to light.                  Certainly no need for apologies Anik, no harm done. :)

These are lovely Paul, I have seen pics before of a green pair and of single amber and pink ones. I feel I have seen an image of these tall branched candlesticks in a catalogue somewhere previously, and definitely not of the much smaller Inwald version, but can't put my finger on anything concrete. I will come back here if I find anything.

I hope you and the family are well.  :)

hello stranger - quick response then ;D ;)  -  been off Trekking again have we?  -  I walk past your road occasionally, and think of you, and wonder if I should pop in for a coffee, but I've forgotten the house No. :-[            Do you still have that vast quantity of trinket sets, and did you get around to a minor publication as you promised?     Shame about the lockdown, we might have gone to a boot sale had they been running still - but you're welcome to take me out for a drink - I'm cheap to entertain ;D
The family are well, thank you for asking and I'm a Grandfather three times over  -  my sons are doing well (at least they're still employed fortunately)  -  in fact I don't know anyone with the virus  -  but then again you are my only friend, I'm lonely and have no others ;)  -  come up and see me some time :-*
How are the girls  -  all now married possibly?

You watch this get chucked out  -  send me a pm some time if you wish  -  difficult to catch up on the Board. :)

Haha Paul, yes another quick response only 10 years give or take a year! We are trying to move, only a couple of miles and no further away from you, but it keeps falling through with the pandemic problems which I concur I know no one with it or who has had it, but eventually fingers crossed we will succeed with our move. I have also forgotten your address, but yes we must catch up when this lockdown is over.

I still have a vast collection of trinket sets, ever bigger and no whiff of publication as yet, I am slow, very slow, I take a year off or 3 quite often but still collect, one day it will happen. I also developed a penchant for vintage powder compacts, especially the mother of pearl embellished and musical ones, so much less space needed for those! I am also now a Granny, time flies! Take care and bye for now.  :)
