Title: Glass Peacock
Post by: adam20 on December 30, 2012, 08:54:00 AM
Just bought this peacock 7" long approx. Thought it could be lamp work Murano, so just checking.

Thanks. Adam

It's quite similar to a much smaller one I've had (~3") for a good number of years Adam!
I never thought too much about it - picked it up in a charity shop and plonked it in a small display of lampwork glass animals I have shoved at the back of the downstairs loo.
I always thought mine was Chinese (but I don't know why I thought that.)
I'll get some pics. I've just dug it out, turned a UV light on it and much to my surprise, the blue body glowed!
It is a fairly complex piece.

I think your has a nicer tail than mine Sue.  I like the colours of the feathers showing the eyes .

Do you think they could be from the same nest Adam?
Yes, the colours are a bit different, but the general construction is very similar. I like the tail of yours - it's a very elegant sweep in which the colours graduate beautifully!
Mine has wing tips, which yours does not seem to have, and the legs and feet of mine are 2 colours of glass mixed up - one glows bright red - I presume cadmium. Yours has top-knots on its crest, which mine does not.

I had thought Chinese, but I'm wondering now, given the reactions to uv light.

I have a fair few such creatures and see hundreds in a case every week at my local dealers. I'm sure they can't all be Chinese. I sometimes get ones with Murano or Pirelli labels so I can match these up with unlabelled ones.

I think your bird and mine could very well be from the same stable, then again styles are so widely copied.

Just for reference some varied birds from my collection which are from 50s/70s. The tallest is definitely Murano.

Below some animals identified as Pirelli.

I think both our birds fit nicely in terms of such quality.

Sue, your's is a Pirelli peacock. I have one the same and it's referenced in Frank's Glass Zoo.   :)

Well.  Jings, crivvens and help ma boab (it is Hogmanay ;) )
I would never have thought that, Nancy - thank-you! Do you think Adam's could be Pirelli too?

And did Pirelli use uranium glass?

I'm not really into glass animals, only a few quirky ones - but  (like paperweights which I don't collect either  ::) ) they do have a bad habit of sneaking into the house when I'm not on guard.
In pirelli, I've got a scottie, a dachshund, a whale and a pig. And now, a peacock! I only bought the peacock and the whale - the others are things which have just been around since I was tiny.

Och away wi yer Oor Wullieness hen! [Whit are you lassies on aboot? - Ed.]  ;D

It appears you are an unwitting (not unwitted!) Pirelli collector, Sue!  I wish I could answer your questions but My knowledge is VERY limited. Frank's your man of course, and with any luck he'll have a look at this topic and provide the answers.  (After reading your comment about the peacock glowing under UV I had a look at mine - I would say there's no obvious glow to mine except maybe around the 'eyes' in the tail feathers.)

Well, time to get ready to hit the town and bring in the bells at the Tron - NOT!  Happy New Year when it comes, Sue. X  :-*

I'll be up tae see in the bells Nancy, but my OH will be in the land of nod by 11pm...  ::)
Not at the Tron, no. (eeeeek!)
Ah've ne'er done the Edinburgh Hogmanay thing. Always used to pit the pairtie on masel' - sae much easier than traipsing all aroun'!

My peacock has a definite glow in the teal bit - and there's a tiny thread of glow which "tails" up inside the neck. The yellow bits glow cadmuim red - there are two colours in the legs.

I am still a bit unsure whether is is a proper uranium glow - or just a ton of manganese in just the insdiey bit of the teal coloured section. When I look at the glow in the body itself, I suspect manganese - but when I see the tiny trail in the neck, I'm convinced it is uranium..... I'm definitely unwitted about that!  ;D

A wonderful new year to you an' yours, Nancy!

Sue's peacock is Pirelli, but not Adams one. Adam's picture showing the Walking Rabbit, goofy dog and squirrel are all Pirelli, but not the birds in the other picture.
