Title: ID of blue/clear spiral banded 'bottle/flask'
Post by: David E on March 15, 2005, 11:35:05 AM
Hi,

Can anyone help ID this 'bottle' or 'flask'?

Bottle (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1760)

Neck (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1759)

Backlit (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1758)

Has a very thick neck that is ground flat at the top, although because the top outer lip is slightly rounded, I would think this was intentional, unless it was much taller and has been lopped off!

The included bands around the side are slightly raised, but not at the base. Just 4" (10cm) tall so a little small for a lamp base.

Any help much appreciated.

I think it might be Cesm-i-Bülbül glass from Pasabahce, Turkey - but it's been many years since I saw examples so can not be 100% sure. It would be current production. The top was either left unfinished - probably because of some intended silver mounting

Thanks Ivo. Wasn't expecting that - never heard of this maker before and I'll see if anyone else can confirm this.

Hi David, I know this is a rather old thread,  but Frank has just ressurected my latent interest in Çeşm-i Bülbül glass, and I really think this piece isn't.
This type of Turkish glass is extremely fine and thin, and in all the pieces I have ever seen, none were this thick or so crudely finished.
If you put Çeşm-i Bülbül (copy & paste so you get all the accents!!) into the search engine, and click on pictures, you will get some beautiful examples of their glass.

This doesn't tell you who made your flask, and I van't say for certain that it isn't Çeşm-i Bülbül, but I hope this might help a little.

All current production of cesm-i-bulbul i have handled was thickwalled glass.
