Yup, got one  ;D

They are not that uncommon and crop up occasionally. They were made for some Ladies Society (can't remember which one now) based in the Midlands. The bear is the symbol for Warwickshire (which is why the cricket team is called The Bears)  ;)

 :o :o :o
What a peculiar thing!
I would think it would be some sort of commission, probably related to the logo.
Regency is a pretty, lacy printed pattern that (IMNSHO) clashes violently with the modernity of the strong Cotswold texture...... and the poor bear illustrated is horribly muzzled and with a bit of a tree, something you only see illustrated in things of antiquity, when such cruelty was rampant. I find it very disturbing.

Thanks David,
Sue,I don't mind the two patterns but can't say I'm keen on the bear logo either.

Are we sure that's a bear. Looks more like a horse to me. And a cartoon horse at that. And certainly doesn't go with the pretty lace pattern.

Carolyn

Added after looking at it again, okay maybe the paws, rather than hoofs, but still...

Definitely the Warwickshire bear. Here a link to the Wikipedia page on the county and you'll see the flag there with the bear and staff.

Personally, I don't think it's a piece that really inspires, to be honest, except to someone interested in Chance glassware. I have also placed the caveat in the new book:

Scarcity does not necessarily equate to collectability

 ;)

Very true David.
Keith, I'd pay you £1 to keep it to yourself. ;)

I'll shove £2 into Oxfam's box today then,  :) and you can both keep then far away from me.
That will save the trouble and expense of sending cash.  8)

Well, it ain't that bad! Not inspiring is how I classified it, but scarce and still collectable to some people. ???

Don't diss the Chance!

Sorry, David.  :-[
I was getting a little bit carried away with conversational theme of disparaging this particular piece. Oxfam will still get my £2 "fine".
(I still find the cruelty aspect of the image very disturbing, even if it is an official heraldic thing.  :-\)

But on a theme of boosting Chance, I lend my copy of "Chance Expressions" to the lovely lady who works in my local library - he sister has collected Chance for quite a while, but didn't know anything about it, or that there was a book even written on it.
Well - she was so impressed and delighted with the book and the chance to read it and find out about her collection, that she gave me a massive great round tin of a certain well-known brand of chocolates as a thank-you. I'd hope she's going to be ordering her own copy. ;)

 ;D

I don't see any reason why not - there is one of me, Christine and Patricia pinned to my office wall, which I'm looking at right now.

It's very close. The text has all been done and I'm starting to lay it out. The delays have always been publishing other books that I am committed to, such as Patricia's (below) and Anne Wilkinson's new one, which is currently being proofed and should be in print by 30th October.
