Title: Skrdlovice - Identified Items
Post by: rocco on May 01, 2011, 03:38:30 PM
My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely :)
Very different styles, but I think they are both great designs...

1. rose/green coloured, organic shaped vase, 23 cm high; I think designed by Emanuel Beranek 1959/60?

2. huge (28cm high and VERY heavy) vase by Jaroslav Svoboda, PN 6975/28

Thanks for looking!
Michael

I especially like the first piece...  very nice Michael.  How many items do you now have in your growing Skrdlovice collection?  (Just whisper the answer -- no need to make the whole world jealous.  :))

Thanks, Anik!
My Skrdlovice collection is 12 items, but that is only a minor part of my Czech glass collection :wsh:

Michael,

It is Emanuel Beranek 1959, PN 59124. A lovely piece. The Jaroslav Svoboda vase is also very nice, I think in the largest size too. A significant series of vases for him during his time at Skrdlovice, as you probably know, he used frequently used cobalt blue to dramatic effect and still does today at his Svoboda Karlov glassworks. I hope you find some more Skrdlovice on your travels!

my Skrdlovice collection has 300 pieces and is still growing

Thank you, Robert and Jindrich!

The Svoboda vase is actually much more impressive in reality -- due to its sheer size and the marvellous technique of the floating blue disks in the thick glass :)

And I love the whole Beranek 1959 range the first vase is from.
Anik, I just realized you have the short brother of this vase! (in the classic blue and green Skrdlovice colours)

Jindrich, 300 pieces :o

My Skrdlovice collection is a little sad compared to other people's...  I've got a total of 7 pieces (6 designed in the 50s, 1 from the 70s).  I've also got a little 8,5cm green ball vase which is very 50s Skrdlovice style, but no match for it in the catalogues:
https://picasaweb.google.com/105348959949603419807/CzechBlownAndMouldedCollection#5593896255650585938

That hasn't stopped me from labeling it as Skrdlovice though...  a girl can always dream and hope.

My collection will grow by 1 next week...  I'm expecting the arrival of a lovely Emanuel Beranek basket/vase designed in 1959 -- in the lovely colours of blue and green.  ;D

Think positive Anik, as soon as you will purchase 1 piece more your collection will grow about 12 percent. For the same growing I need to purchase 40 pieces :-)

Thanks, David! - I am very content with my Czech collection so far (but wouldn't mind to add some more Exbor pieces; unfortunately too rare and/or expensive).

Anik, as I am not so fond of basket type things there are more for you again :)
And I don't buy bowls any more -- take up too much storing space...

I counted my Czech glass - Skrdlovice is appr. 28 % of it ;D

I dislike baskets... strongly.  I find them strangely grotesque.  But this basket-vase is different from others I've seen.  I'll post a photo when I get it.  As for bowls, though some a very attractive, I don't buy.  It takes up more space (which I don't have) to display a bowl than it does a vase.  :)

Anik, I agree with everything you said :)
So even more curious for a pic of your new basket-vase...

And here's my Skrdlovice piece Nr. 13, again a Stahlikova design.
Interesting for the experts, I guess: this one seems to be a second, bottom is engraved "II".
(It has a minor flaw at the inside, that is why I guess).

Michael:

That is a lovely piece, one of my favourites.  But just to show you that good Skrdlovice can come from outside of Vienna here's my latest piece found in Ladysmith, BC, a hotbed of Czech glass lovers. It's a Hlava design from the 70's and weights 2.2 Kg.  Anik, there's more to Canada than just good hockey. Time to visit and build up your Skrdlovice collection.

David, what a great find! - I think Pavel Hlava only rarely designed for Skrdlovice...
I would be very jealous -- if I had not been lucky myself today. Have you seen the cut vase in my other thread? :chky:
(And I also found my very first Prachen piece, a nice blue Koudelka vase)

not my forte Anik, as you will know, but a nice little basket if I may say so  -  and another gem to add to your growing collection, which I'm sure is now something to be very proud of. :)

Thank you, Paul.

It took me a couple of months to decide whether or not I should purchase it, being a basket and a bit more feminine than I like my glass to be.  But I'm terribly glad I did... it's an interesting design.  :)

Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on May 12, 2011, 05:41:24 PM
Anik, thank you very much for showing!
It is an interesting design, the thin glass at the sides makes it look more 'delicate' than other Skrldovice pieces of that period.

Still not my cup of tea :usd:

If ever a Skrdlovice basket I want one of those: http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass?authkey=Gv1sRgCI2S5fCi1JOMKA#5424449355763592994 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass?authkey=Gv1sRgCI2S5fCi1JOMKA#5424449355763592994)
And if ever a glass animal I want an Exbor fish

Michael, you'd prefer to have a basket with a big 'ol crazy handle rather than my lovely, well-put-together little piece??? (http://www.sympato.ch/smileys/oh.gif)   That's nuts.   :usd:

But I completely agree with the Exbor fish...  maybe one day...  :hi:
Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on May 14, 2011, 01:44:03 PM
Anik, I guess what I dislike in the typical Czech basket designs (apart from being totally useless for :fwr: or :sm:) is this twisted thingie where the handles come together.
Distracts from the shape itself...

BTW, today at the fleamarket I saw 3 different Mstisov baskets! One Romana, one Rhapsody and one Opera (which was the most beautiful). I resisted. ;D

This piece arrived from back East (i.e. Ontario) the day before I received the new Sypka catalogue with a picture in it of a similar piece. Again, a monster, only 9" tall but very solid.  It's by Hora.

An interesting piece, David.  I don't seem to find any newer Skrdlovice designs here.  Is it 1980s?

By the way, I've just read on Jindrich's website the sad news of Jan Juda's passing. :-\   May he rest in peace.

Not sure if I like it or not; but well -- I never thought I would ever buy design from the 1980ies, and now I own two vases from that questionable period :help:

@Anik: nothing in June so far...
I was in Paris last week, and visited several fleamarkets, but the offer was quite disappointing (and the prices way too high)
I was successful regarding my Scandi collection -- found a beautiful Sarpaneva decanter for 2 Euro; and the pieces in my other ID threads from yesterday.

My best Czech buy in the last weeks remains unidentified, unfortunately:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40830.0.html (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40830.0.html)

@David: WOW!!
So Canada seems the place to go when hunting for Skrdlovice :)
I especially like the Stahlikova piece and the Oliva vase --

Keep posting!

David...  it wasn't an oversight!  I was just trying to ease myself into the thread gently before getting smacked with a truckload of wonderful Czech glass. ;D  Now why on earth didn't you show off your pieces earlier???

The Stahlikova vase is by far my favourite, and on my wish list.  I also really appreciate the Oliva piece... and the Svoboda ball...  heck, I'd feel like a winner if I had any one of the items you've posted!  Thank you so much for sharing.

Michael, I haven't had any luck on the Skrdlovice front either.  I do like your facet cut vase, however...  I tried looking for a possible designer, but came up with nothing concrete.  Does the piece have a lot of wear to the base?

Till the next Skrdlovice item...  :hi:

The three of us put them in the same order in order of preference. I've got a tall Stahlikova vase in the same colours and they look great together.

I forgot to add this Pavel Juda piece. I should add that they're not all from Canada, but Canada is David good fro 50's Skrdlovice for some reason.

So nice -- is this by Jan Juda?
(Am I right that this is based on a late 1950s design by Emanuel Beranek?)

Saw a brown one some months ago on the fleamarket, but the seller insisted it was Murano (and very valuable), so I had to go without...

Thanks for showing!

Nr. 16 -- I got this today as a birthday present! :chky:

Huge 28 cm Skrdlovice vase in a beautiful colourway by (I think) Emanuel Beranek, with label.

I have a slightly different one to this in my collection but very similar and Emanuel (or Bohuslav) is what I would think for this one. Very nice indeed, it is bound to help make any birthday a happy one!!! I expect the label is gold not red? If I can find a more firm attribution re. exact Beranek member I will post again but you are definitely on the right track there! These large vases that are certainly not Jan Beranek ones, seem quite scarce by comparison generally... I know Andy on GMB has some in his collection, as does David Langhaugh. I really like this particular 50's colourway a lot and have a few pieces in it. In a group they look wonderful.... Happy Birthday!

Michael:

A beautiful birthday present. Like bOBA, I'm a big admirer of this colourway. I have it in a big piece by Bohuslav, but this is a sleeker piece that I like very much.

David

PS  My apologies re my Pavel Juda attribution. I was following the lead of the Sypka catalogue and Dusan who both attribute this style to Pavel.

Thank you both very much!!

@Robert: you are perfectly right as usual, the label is gold coloured :)

@David: no need to apologize, I have made the same attribution here on the board not so long ago (following Dusan, I think)

Thanks, Anik! :kissy:
This was really a great present...

@Robert: now that you stated that these vases were quite scarce I started to look around, but couldn't find many similar pieces. As you said Andy seems to have one of them (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,19903.msg114192.html#msg114192 (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,19903.msg114192.html#msg114192)), and David has one which is similar, but not sure if it's the same: https://picasaweb.google.com/lasilove/CzechoslovakiaSkrdlovice#5496828316863782514 (https://picasaweb.google.com/lasilove/CzechoslovakiaSkrdlovice#5496828316863782514)
That's all I could find...

This Jan Kotik vase from the "Magic of glass" exhibition does look similar as well (but I may be misguided by the identical colourway): http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass2?authkey=Gv1sRgCMb6jOOoj8aS2gE#5424441996244528770 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass2?authkey=Gv1sRgCMb6jOOoj8aS2gE#5424441996244528770)

Distinguishable feature in mine is that the pattern may look random at first sight but is absolutely regular with three identical sides (took me a while to realize that).

Michael, out of curiosity, how big is the opening on your vase?

I really like these sculptural Skrdlovice vases, though I can't quite tell them apart... To my eyes, the vase in the link you gave to David's album doesn't quite look the same as yours.  I look forward to see what others say.

In my album, I've got two vases (one topaz cased in clear, one green) attributed to Jan Beranek (5988) although they don't look the same.  The topaz one is a bit more wild whereas the green one has got much calmer lumps and bumps. Ah, the confusion and complexity of it all...  :usd:

Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...

Michael:  I don't think I have a vase like yours. Quite a few of mine are also symmetrical, too.

So another Skrldlovice vase with a mystery :)

Anik, you are right that these vases are really difficult to tell apart...
The more common Jan Beranek PN 5988 vases show significant differences in pattern, so I don't know how big the differnce in other designs (for instance the Jan Kotik vase I linked to) may be...

Oh, and the opening in mine is rather wide compared to that Kotik vase.
But the overall look is quite similar, don't you think?

Michael

But the overall look is quite similar, don't you think?

:spls:  That's exactly the problem (for me)...  everything looks quite similar and quite different at the same time. I'm wondering if I'll ever develop an eye for detail, or the logic to know how much detail makes a piece a certain pattern number...
Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: bOBA on June 20, 2011, 01:37:01 PM
All lovely vases! Just a quick message. Davids' I am pr3etty sure is Jan Beranek 5988. The Magic of Glass Kotik I suggest is a rare misattribution for Pardubice Magic of Glass. Kotik designed nothing like this in 1953. PN 5354 by Bohuslav Beranek in my opinion is a match for this and so too is Andy's vase identical. I have thought this for a long time.

However, I do not recognise Michael's vase for certain (yet). i would like to see a couple more photos though, even if it is hard to attribute the designer for the vase, it would be nice to see a couple more pictures anyway!

Thank you very much for your contributions, Anik and Robert!

I attach a pic of the side with the label (together with the first pic for comparison). As you can see the views are almost identical.
And as the hotworked decoration is rather difficult to see in this vase, I did a rough sketch (sorry for the quality :))
This decor is repeated 3 times...

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Anik and David!

This one was exceptionally cheap -- for most of my Skrdlovice items I paid between 15,- and 25,- Euro (excluding my big Svoboda vase and my Vizner whirlpool vase, which cost around double of that)
Other Skrdlovice bargains were my early Jan Kotik vase (Euro 5,-) and my Stahlikova dark blue/purple ashtray (Euro 1,-).

Last sunday was really a lucky day: I found this Skrdlovice vase, a Peceny "Dragon's Head" vase for 50 Cent, a Jurnikl ashtray for EUR 2,50, a Tapio Wirkkala lamp base for EUR 2,-, a Vaclav Hanus vase for EUR  3,-, a red Saara Hopea drinking glass for EUR 3,-, and two Kaj Franck Kilta milk cups for 50 Cent each...
But although I am not unhappy to pay very little, I do not mind at all to spend a bigger sum if it is something I really like :)

Michael, if you go to Jindrich's website, click on "Vystavy" then on "Stale" then on "Muzeum v Pardubicich", you will be taken to the museum's web page.  At the very bottom, click on "Roky 1945 az 1949".  In 1946, you will surely find your vase.

Congratulations, Anik!! :rah:
And what a nice colourway!

My galaxy vase is still the most discussed piece of glass in my household -- almost everybody but me thinks it is ugly. :usd:

BTW, I am far from a dry spell at the moment - I found my first Exbor fish last weekend! :chky:
Will post pics when I have time at the end of the week...

Congratulations, Anik.  I really like the Galaxy range although I've never managed to find a vase of one.  They were impossible to find for a long time, and now their price makes them prohibitive. They're not a style admired by non-glass lovers, though, are they?

Well done (and please don't tell me how much you paid for it of it was cheap)!

Thank you, David  ;D...  are these vases really that hard to come by?  I suppose that's even happier news for me.

I got the vase using dirty tactics which I'm sure will bring the condemnation of some... (http://serve.mysmiley.net/ashamed/ashamed0001.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)  It came up on Allegro just a few days ago for 49zl.  But I've got one competitor who seems to bet on everything I want, and obviously has much more cash at her disposal than I do.  So to elimate her chances, I contacted the seller and offered 90zl to end the auction.  The seller agreed.  With postage, I paid 103,50zl (approximately 25 euro or 33 CAD).

I'm a good person.  Really I  am. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/innocent/innocent0002.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

When you say you're a good person, you mean historically speaking?  (See thread on sellers who change an auction to BIN).  The price was very right! There's a few come up on German eBay, but they're usually over $100.

My first one was a brown bowl/vase which I bought on eBay but picked up locally for $16.50. I bid because I'd bought a Harrtil piece and a Sarpaneva piece from the same person who was selling her aunt's estate. I reckoned it must be something decent.  It goes really nicely with the brown vase I have.  My preference is for the 'Sirius' line by Svobodova, but I don't see it around much.

And Anik:  I still respect you.

Sorry, Anik. I was pulling your leg. I thought perhaps you might assuage your guilt by passing the piece on to me.

I think it's a case of seller beware. If someone is offering to BIN, you can be pretty sure it's worth more that than the seller expected. I'm sue this seller is glad he or she turned down the BIN.  It's a Sarpaneva piece for Venini that started at $9.99.

Thank you Frank, John and David. :)   I do realise, however, that offering a buy-it-now price might be considered unacceptable by some.  I'm undecided though I did have a wonderful way of convincing myself it's OK a few days ago... there were no other bidders plus I offered the seller almost twice the starting price and what I was honestly able to pay.  Not completely evil.  Now, where did I leave my darn halo... ?

After some while another nice Skrdlovice find: Emanuel Beranek vase, PN 5906, 18 cm, in one of my favourite colourways.

I also found one of the Czech pieces high up on my wishlist (unfortunately heavily chipped to the base -- but at 2,- Euro I had to get it): a Josef Svarc vase with air rings :)

Michael, your Skrdlovice collection really is growing nicely...  :rah:    What a wonderful addition.

P.S.  As for the ringed Svarc vase, I had the opportunity to buy one on Allegro about 10 months back.  It went unsold for an opening bid of 90zl -- though it was in lovely condition, I didn't bet on it for lack of money at the time.    The seller, sadly, never re-listed it.

@Ross: I did contribute once to that thread (my windowsill display (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,39041.msg222973.html#msg222973)); unfortunately the major part of my collection is not displayed but stuffed in every possible corner of the apartment :)
But I'm working on a picasa gallery -- I will let you know once it goes online!

@Anik: What a pity you couldn't afford the Svarc vase then -- 90zl seems like a great bargain for such a piece...

I'm looking froward to seeing Rocco's Picasa Gallery, but in the meantime Anik has hinted that I should add this  piece to the thread.  It's heavy, cast glass designed by Petr Hora around 1990. It's 30.3 cm tall.  Robert tells me that Vizner and Hora experimented with cast glass at the same time. There is a Vizner cast glass piece in October 2010 Sypka catalogue.

This piece was bought in Canada and I admit I bought it out curiosity more than lust at first sight. But in person it is very striking and fits in very well with my other Skrdlovice blue pieces.

Ahhh, thank you for adding the sculpture to this thread, David  :).   To be honest, I don't quite know what to think about the piece -- it doesn't hold a 'wow' factor for me, though the more I look, the more I find the clear part interesting.  I certainly wouldn't mind seeing one and handling one in real life.  I still think it's a great addition to your collection.

By the way, it does look wonderful with your other blues.   :hi:

Hi from Sydney, Australia!

I have this object by Emanuel Beranek, 1958, pattern 5869.
It retains its gold sticker “Hand made Skrdlovice Czechoslovakia” on its foot.
It is h. 23 cm. The blue fades to pink.
Thanks to both Jindrich and Robert Bevan-Jones for their help in identifying it and giving me the pattern number. Robert also mentioned that this was a piece done when Emanuel was retiring from the glassworks.
I have been collecting Bohemian glass of various periods for many years now and I had not seen another like this Beranek before. I liked it initially because of its similarity to Sarpaneva’s  “orkidea”. Australia has long been an importer of glass. The industry here was never really large. We imported from the States and from England, but the Czechs were great exporters. I have come to realize that much Victorian glass here is probably Czech rather than English.

Beautiful piece. Emanuel really knew how to use colour for maximum effect.

I've bought a few quite interesting pieces of Czech glass from Australia so there must be a fair bit around. I should imagine it's the same situation as in Canada, much Czech glass gets identified as soemthing else. Do you happen know the name of the Australian companies that imported Czech glass?

Hi langhaugh.
Most of the post-war stuff came in through one company here Bohemia Crystal Pty Limited Australia : http://www.bohemia.com.au/profile.htm
They state that there was little coming in from the pre-war period, but the amount of Loetz, Kralik, Welz and Harrach suggests that buyers were making trips to Europe. They were probably from Department Stores but I know little about the early days. I've not come across early catalogues as yet. I'm on the look out!

My Skrdlovice collection has grown by 1, bringing my total up to 11 (plus two "possibly Skrdlovice" pieces)...  my latest buy is a charming little vase, only 93mm tall.  Though it is similar to at least two designs in the Skrdlovice patterns catalogue, it's still a bit of a mystery.   :)

Anik, nice piece! -- Is this plain brown or does it have a clear layer as well?

It is really difficult with these early hotworked pieces to ID the right pattern.
I have looked several times through the pattern books on the Pardubice site, but still have no clue about designer, year or PN of my big beautiful (birthday present) vase...

David, I'm glad you like my vase  :).  At this point, everything I look at looks similar, then a second later, completely different to my vase, so I don't know what comment to make about Wayne's vase.  I do think it's earlier than 1960s though.

Anik:

Sorry, not a candlestick (bit slow on these around here right now, although I've been told there were lots around Canada in the 60's)) but a big, masculine piece. A Jaroslav Svoboda design from around 1972 with a red Skrdlovice label and with what seems to be the remnants of a plastic, I think,  Glassexport label. It weighs an astounding 4.28 kg, is 27 cm wide and 11 cm high. It's going straight on to the coffee table in my front room. Many thanks to bOBA for pointing this one out.

I bought this vase late last year here at a market in Surry Hills Sydney, Australia.

It still retains the Beranek label.
I contacted Jindrich and he gave me the necessary information:
vase 8829 - manufactured in three sizes - 8829/24, 8829/20 and 8829/15, Jaroslav Wasserbauer.
I had seen a photo in one of the Beranek catalogues.

Today I read through the threads of this Topic and was really happy to find the link: http://www.vcm.cz/program/exhibitions/glass/glass.html
It was there that I made leap into the catalogues! I am thrilled! Thanks to Anik & Rocco! Thank you all!

I have a question about the numeration of the items in catalogue:

My vase is on page 12 of 44 pages at : http://www.vcm.cz/program/exhibitions/glass/pdf/88_91.pdf
In the left hand column there are numbers at the top:8829/24, DNO 8Ø
Which I read as vase 8829 - 1988 number 29 , 24 cm high, 8 cm wide.

And at the left at the bottom are: 880189.
What is the signifivcance of this number?
The medium vase has the number: 880190 and the smallest 880191

Regards
 to all....

Thanks for the nice comments, guys! :)

I think I am lucky to have a very good visual memory (if this is the right expression).

Regarding the chip: I guess you know the feeling when you spot a piece you would love to have, and notice it has a flaw; to me it then depends on the price, and how much I like it (not a difficult decision in this case; I was so happy I didn't even aks if I would get it for 2,- Euro -- which I usually would do ;D).

Robert, BTW, that Zertova ashtray is gorgeous...

Robert, thanks for showing -- what a great piece! I hope to find one of those one day -- and I would gladly overpay for it too!

It is funny that most of the pieces I find (and want to have) at the fleamarkets and secondhand shops here are affordable for me, which means they usually cost between 10 and 30 Euro. It is rare that I see something at an outrageous prize (like a beautiful Vladimir Jelinek Skrdlovice vase the seller wanted 700,- Euro for ::))

Thanks Michael,
(Thanks also, to Anik).

Michael, I am sure you put quite a bit of effort into finding these bargains and they do not just fall into your lap! Well done. A lot of research and travel must go into it and it is producing ideal results for you! Collecting glass is a fascinating thing, as we all must agree; where we find it, what it is, what price it is, all these factors vary slightly and contain an element of luck. I have certainly enjoyed finding a couple of bargains here and there. We all have expense ceilings (and space limitations) too, and have to live by them..... Skrdlovice glass allows everybody to afford one or two pieces and more, this makes collecting it so much fun. Over 60 years to collect and hundreds of easily recognisable designs too... from 10 euros to several 1000. Personally, I will even defend most Skrdlovice baskets and ashtrays. They tend to fall into the lower end of expense yet many of them can be little gems, with elegant design and can often have been made with great glassmaking skill. I don't wish to enter basket wars (I know some collectors hate all ashtrays and baskets, it is their right..!) I do like vases of course, but I was happily contributing to this excellent thread and really forgot to post images after worrying about what to post... having seen so many great pieces on this thread.... then I just started reading the thread rather than posting...! So as a belated start I can post a few odd pictures:

A 1962 Jan Beranek basket, a 1952 Skrdlovice ashtray, a selection of ashtrays (plus one Andromeda bowl), and a small Vizner vase that I found at a large Glass Fair for quite a good price, at a large glass fair, buying it as "Bohemian glass," not specified further....

Many thanks for the images and ccomment Robert, Michael and Anik.

I went to a market here in Sydney on Saturday and bought a Berānek košík 5910.
I paid $25 ( GBP 16, 18 Euros ) for it but was happy to get it.
Baskets are not usually my thing either.
What I liked though was the subtle use of the colors and the double containers.
Prices are on the up here too in Australia!

I went to the catalogues and found that it was 1959 and realized that maybe my earlier post of the Beranek vase was 5902 rather than 5869.

What do you others think? The images in the catalogue are very faded in the 1958 section of the catalogue.

Hi Kevin, a nice piece. You can see how the family glassmakers adapted their designs without precious behaviour. My Jan Beranek basket is obviously related to your earlier Emanuel Beranek one. The pattern number at this time is somewhat unimportant, Emanuel was leaving and the factory had unusual students working there and the upheaval seems to have created some overlaps for the patterns at this time, so the piece is the same for both numbers for your vase. The number with the better image is the more concrete pattern number, the other was done during the disruption and was just made clearer in the later number, when the dust had settled a bit,

Robert and Kevin, thanks for showing -- all beautiful pieces (even the baskets :))
It is not that I don't like glass baskets at all -- I just have to put a stop somewhere...
Another thing I resist are single coloured pieces, I like to have at least two colours.

But I do like (and buy) ashtrays. :sm: Robert, yours are all very nice, especially the other Zertova piece.
My favourite Skrdlovice ashtray (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,37929.0.html)

BTW, Robert, have you ever found out the designer or pattern nr. of my big vase (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40346.msg229142.html#msg229142)? After looking through the pattern books several times I am not much wiser...

Is the height important?

5988 is 30 cm high
5548 is 28 cm

For "hutni" - free hand glass the dimension is always not exact but can vary + -  2 cm and it still is accepted as a defined pattern

Jindrich -- I do need you! :)
As you can see there are still many mysteries to be solved...

Without Robert's and your help here on the board, and your fabulous website as a ressource, I would know nothing about Czech glass.

Kevin, thanks a lot for looking into the catalogues on my behalf!
I think 2 cm size difference doesn't rule out any of the patterns I'm afraid...

5988 it isn't for sure, I have one and it looks different.
The Bohuslav Beranek 5548 is a strong possibility -- although the pattern doesn't seem to be exactly like mine...

Michael I echo your thoughts about the work Jindrich has done and continues to do for all of us!

Yesterday I came across a piece on Collector's Weekly: a František Vízner vase with some an inyteresting signature/detail on the bottom:

http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/29171-frantisek-vizner-art-glass-signed-with

The owner was asked : This Vizner piece I have had for about 20 years now....Any information on this is appreciated. It does have tiny scratches on the top......Are there any ways of removing scratches from glass? I am wondering why this piece hadn't been numbered? Thank you for your comments............John

I replied to the owner:
"You can read about Alchymia Praha at this site:
http://www.iwu.edu/iwunews/magazine/pastissues/Winter_2003/glass.shtml

"It was a business venture set up in the US by Raymond Berger — together with partner Alex Shapiro that went from 2000-2004. Alchymia Prahawas a company created to market handmade contemporary glassware designed by leading Czech artists. Alchymie Praha (Czech for “Prague Academy”) cemented its arrival as a player in the world of retail glassware by signing a two-year, 10-market exclusivity pact with Neiman Marcus to carry the entire line. The affordably priced, signed-and-numbered collections are not only finding favor among consumers, but they have also energized the Czech Republic’s decorative glass industry and provided a new audience for talented artists whose work was previously unknown in America.""

Does anyone know anything more about this venture "Alchymia Praha"?

Why the piece is not numbered? It merely has __/500. Any suggestions?

Is it from 2000-2004 or is it earlier? I take it that this is also Vízner's hand signature as well as the block title?

Well, I do not know too much about Alchymia Praha, it seems to me that it was not succesful project of selling Czech glass, company with this name never exist according to company register of CR.

I know personaly from Frantisek Vizner, that he re-designed few older Skrdlovice patterns. The difference is in size and also in rim - older Skrdlovice pieces had the rim rounded in flame, recent products for Alchymie have rim cut and polished. The cutting was cheaper and faster option for manufacturing. Vizner pieces had been manufactured in Beranek Glass s.r.o. I do not know reason, but only few pieces oredered by Alchymie had been sold them, the rest had remained in Beranek Glass stock, some pieces signed by Frantisek Vizner, some pieces without signature. From the Beranek stock I purchased my pieces in December 2008, i had been so lucky that Mr. Vizner personaly had selected the pieces with "nicer" bubbles  for me.

I have seen some Vladimir Klein pieces at picture from Alchymie, I will try to ask him more about this project.

Hi Jindrich

Thanks for the explanation.
I'd be interested to hear what Vladimir Klein says about the Alchimie venture.
I got the impression that it was only short-lived.
Still there may well be other pieces in the US that were sold.
The photos in the 'iwu' article look interesting to me.

Your knowlege in these matters is invaluable.

The latest additions from Canada.  I would have doubled the number of definites here, but for a Skrdlovice expert telling me that two weren't Skrdlovice. See if you can pick the non Skrdlovice (and Anik is disqualified as she has an unfair advantage having been born in Canada).

The competition closes tomorrow morning as I leave for Britain in the afternoon.

Three more pics in next post.

I'm disqualified?  Well that's a relief...  it saves me the embarrassment of admitting I only know half the answer. ;)
David, have a wonderful and safe trip!

I'm glad that I am too late for the competition, because I am not sure at all :)
But that basket seems familiar (Anik :hi:)
The platter does look Skrdlovice as well, not so sure about the last item posted.
The green ashtray...  :usd:

I was successful as well, found a huge (37 cm long) Frantisek Spinar bowl yesterday, PN 7609.

And one more beautiful piece of Czech glass (non-Skrdlovice) came my way today: a big Mstisov bowl, by Vlastimil Svoboda, 1962.
(Took me some time to identify it, but the colours seemed familiar, and I finally remembered a thread about Mstisov vase by Vladimir Mika (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,39868.0.html) which was discussed here some time ago).

Michael

p.s. @David: have a great journey to Britain!

Two very good pieces, Michael.  The Mstisov would have stumped me.

The bowl, a big one at 32 cm wide, is by Jaroslav Beranek and is either PN 5474 or part of the same series.  The basket is by Veliskova, the third different colourway I've found in Canada.  The elephant is great, but Pallme Konig although a Skrdlovice -originated design according to Robert.  And the green and brown basket is the subject of debate, still up in the air. More later.

Thanks for good wishes for Britian.  See you all in October.

David, I'm fascinated with the elephant piece.  The body of the ashtray is the spitting image of the Skrdlovice ashtrays seen in the 1957/8 CGR -- yet it's not Skrdlovice.  As for the green and brown 'splashing water' basket-thing, I would have given an arm that it is Skrdlovice... shows how much I know. :spls:

Michael, great pieces!  The Svoboda bowl is lovely, though I wouldn't have been able to identify it.  How on earth do you remember all the things you see???  Highly impressive...  I think I'm even more jealous of your good memory than of your beautiful glass. :)

Thanks for your nice comments, David and Anik!
David, the big Jaroslav Beranek bowl is great, not so sure about the elephant ashtray; animal-decorated items are not for me I guess...

I am a little proud to have found that Mstisov range (called "DUHA") in CGR rather fast -- regarding the fact I wasn't sure at all it even was a Czech piece :usd:
When I spotted it on the fleamarket I thought it was lovely, but had no idea what it was; the seller said "Murano" (so Czech origin was highly probable ;D), and I got it quite cheap.

At home I had a look through the Skrdlovice catalogues and pattern books, but no match; then I remembered the Mika vase I mentioned above, had a look through CGR of 1962 and 1963 on Jindrich's site -- and there it was: http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue19633?authkey=Gv1sRgCOqr84bl7cfwZA#5441435472581589714 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue19633?authkey=Gv1sRgCOqr84bl7cfwZA#5441435472581589714). As you can see the images are quite faded, the colours are much more vibrant in reality.

And today another addition to my Skrdlovice collection, a very nice piece, at a very nice price (6 Euro): Svobodova "Galaxy" ashtray, PN 6569.
Sold as Murano glass ;D

Michael!   (http://serve.mysmiley.net/confused/confused0067.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)  Now how much goodness can one person find???  Apart from my drooling, I'm starting to itch with horrendous jealousy.  I do love your Galaxy ashtray... Congratulations!

This morning, my Skrdlovice collection grew by one as well, though I still can't decide who's the designer or what's the pattern number.  It's a slightly oblong plate with a light pink base and light blue body.  There are two 'knobs' on the underside and two swirls... the plate is rather small at 27cm at its widest, but weighs quite a bit: 1316g.   :)

Thanks, Anik!
Don't you think my Mstisov multicolour bowl is quite an unusual piece of Czech glass? -- I love it!

And congratuations as well -- what a beautiful plate!
I think I will give up searching for pattern nrs. for those early hotworked pieces...

And don't be too jealous ;D -- it costs me lots of time and effort to hunt for my glass on the fleamarkets here; often I go home after an hour without having found a single piece -- or even worse: I buy something I don't really want out of frustration ;) (but I have to admit -- it's great fun, too!)

Anik, you are lucky -- such a great collection!
I would love to find a Wiedmann piece once -- but that kind of glass doesn't seem to come my way here.
And how envious I was when you found you Matura head vase...

Still I have to admit -- the last 3 days have been very successful :)

And one more for my slowly-growing Skrdlovice collection...  a splendid topaz and green ashtray with three pulled lobes to the top underside, designed by Rudolf Beranek, pattern number 5464.  It's about 18cm wide, 9cm tall and weighs 1432g.

Yay for me!  ;D

(Stupid question:  Shouldn't the 7420 have some blue/azure in it?  Is an all clear one rarer?)
Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on September 05, 2011, 06:04:08 PM
A very good question, Anik, I wondered about the colour issue myself.

I noticed when I looked for this range in the pattern books, that it should come in blue; but the few I have seen so far all were clear: one in the Pardubice exhibition (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass3?authkey=Gv1sRgCObJqrf-rcTALw#5425005898665103858), tall one in a recent thread (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,42823.0.html) (this exact vase is currently available on ebay at a - well - high :o prize), and the ones on the latest Beranek glassworks website.

So I would think blue is on the rare side...

Aesthetically, they are just as beautiful as vases, just not as practical, space-wise.

This morning at the market, I only bought one piece... my 11th Schrotter bullet (which I know should be called a lens  :usd:) for 3zl.  That was the beginning and end of my glass excitement for the day.  Perhaps next time I shall be luckier.  (On the brighter side, next week, the postman should deliver 2 Skrdlovice vases for me - a Jezek and a Beranek. Tee-hee! ;D)

My 16th Skrdlovice piece... a blue Jaroslav Svoboda 7302/18 vase.

When I placed a bid on it (on Aukro), I thought it was nice - no big wow factor, but a good piece to have in my collection.  It was only when I got it in the mail today and held it, did I think "OH WOW!" followed by a whole series of verbalized ooooooohhhhhh's and aaaaaahhhhhh's.  It's by far my favourite piece to date.  I love its heaviness, clean lines and internal well which looks amazing when held up to the light.  Photographs really do not do it any justice.

Now if I could only find a green one like Michael's  here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,38104.0.html).  ;D

Rocco, a great Wunch piece. I really like these and in different sizes and colours they can display really well together. I attach a photo I took of some belonging to Jindrich. The Vizner piece picked up by David is splendid too. Both are excellent examples of 1970's Skrdlovice designs. I saw the Vizner vase in the Midlands when David came over and it is even better in person, a great sculptural quality and light hitting it really creates some wonderful effects...

Even my husband likes the Hora piece, which is nothing short of a miracle...   :)

David, I haven't exactly been 'finding' these Skrdlovice items. Though I won the 8316 on Allegro, the others, beginning with the 7606 Jezek vase which I posted on September 16, have come from both Aukro and from two very friendly Czech ladies who offer me their glass before they list them on the service...

I've still got some very nice Skrdlovice coming my way in about 2 weeks.  ;D

Wow -- phantastic pieces, Robert!

Though my Czech collection has grown nicely last week, unfortunately not my Skrdlovice collection.
I could have bought a nice small early Skrdlovice vase today, but it was too heavily scratched; funny thing was that the first time somebody wanted to sell a Czech piece to me as Scandinavian (instead of the usual Murano attribution :))

Anik, great pieces! (I especially like the Palecek vase).

Didn't I hear someone complain not so long ago that her collection was growing too slowly? ;D

I was joking, Anik! ;D
I know that feeling when you spend a lot of time searching for nice glass, and nothing comes your way...

In Vienna 2 more Skrdlovice pieces found their way to my collection:
Really beautiful Jaroslav Beranek vase, PN 5346, 22 cm (I am still not sure whether it is single coloured or 2-coloured), and a funny short Emanuel Beranek 5989 vase, only 20 cm high :) -- pic attached showing the midget next to the normal version.

And I managed to update my gallery -- several new pics now online...

I love the Jaroslav Beranek vase and am hoping one will find its way into my collection one day.  I just have to remember in which direction it 'screws'.

Great addition, Michael!  (I'm also glad you're happy with your small Em. Beranek piece.  Though I prefer it to the larger version, it's not my favourite design.)

Thanks, Anik!
Skrdlovice pieces always seem to "screw" in the same direction :)

The Emanuel Beranek design is much better in real life (Iwasn't so fond of it on pics either).

I did not know there was an early Beranek glass museum opened recently near Prague!  :ac1: A very nice cabinet of the glass that started the ball rolling at Skrdlovice. Including the famous, hard to find, original "ram" vase, the large piece in the middle of the top shelf, next to a smaller example of the work of Lichtagova with clear handles, plus many Emanuel Beranek designs.... All looking a part of a set, which in a way they are, defining an era of production under difficult circumstances when materials and quality equipment was hard to find, the then very small factory still managed to produce some lovely things still enjoyed today, altogether a wonderful display,

Also a great Andromeda for Michael and the 50's EB vases are great too, more sizes than we think in some patterns....

Wow Jindrich, what a collection (and so lovely displayed) :hiclp: Thanks for showing!
Although I am usually more fond of "modern" Skrdlovice, as a group the early pieces look great.

And thanks Robert for your comment. Is my "Andromeda" vase possibly an earlier one? (The shape of mine looks very similar to the drawing in the pattern book of 1953, whereas the vase in Mark Hill's book and the beautiful brown/clear vase (https://picasaweb.google.com/lasilove/CzechoslovakiaSkrdlovice#5570843740886950434) David has in his collection seem a little different)

Could this 20 year old mystery Czech piece be Skrdlovice? (Just connected with Jindrich's display and it instantly reminded me of this range, more scattered around the board, and gut insticts are worth a follow up).  I think we did finally get one with a Czech label. Date period would be good too, though 30s to 50s has been assumed for no good reason than style.

I hope to post a couple of pieces in the next couple of months that might be familiar to you.  Also, a show this weekend that might have soemthing.  I did buy a Roubicek piece that I will include when it arrives.

Ok, Anik, here we go... ;D (as long as I haven't misidentified my newest purchase)

Found this vase yesterday, opaque red thickly cased in clear glass.
I was totally uncertain what it was, but the base did look very Czech (flat and polished with nicely bevelled edge, and enough wear to make me think it has been around a while).
At home a look through the Skrdlovice catalogues on Jindrich's site didn't help in ID, but the Skrdlovice pattern books pointed the right way I think:

Pavel Jezek, PN 7927/22 (the vase is almost exactly 22 cm high)

Here is a link (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/MagicOfGlass?authkey=Gv1sRgCI2S5fCi1JOMKA#5424450721605899346) to the smaller jardiniere from this range at the Pardubice exhibition -- seems to me the exact same technique and colour.

But still would be great if our Skrdlovice experts could confirm my attribution! :)

I am with Jindrich on the lamp. (Drinking pilsner with Jiri Suhajek sounds like fun!) Though we all agree it is very likely 130's Bohemian origin, there were several factories in the region making similar wares, in the absence of direct evidence, attributing Skrdlovice is hard. I would equally look at CMS Krasno and others.

Rocco's vase does look like the Jezek pattern. The diameter has to be 10 cm, if so, it looks quite solid as an attribution- I have to say i have never seen it before! It almost looks too plain for Skrdlovice but it certainly seems that it is. The pattern book image of the curved area of orangy-red at the base partly persuades me as does the size of the piece, weight and base...

Robert (bOBA)
Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on November 04, 2011, 04:51:26 PM
Thanks a lot for your comment, Robert!

Diameter is a little over 9 cm, height 21.6 cm. I hope that is within tolerance for Skrdlovice.
What persuaded me was the base -- sides slightly curved towards the bottom, then the bevelled edge. Identical to all my Skrdlovice pieces from the 1970s...

But ID from the drawing in a pattern book is surely not the most reliable thing...
I just could not imagine where a piece like this could have been made apart from Czechoslovakia. :D

And yes -- not the most typical or sophisticated Srkldovice design from that period -- but still a beautiful, quality piece (I am rather glad that the vase comes without the ring-shaped handles :))
And on the rare side I guess; or is it just that no one recognizes the pattern?

Michael

I wouldn't have picked out Micheal's vase for Skrdlovice, either. I'm impressed for the saem two reasons as Anik.

I've been going through the Skrdlovice patterns this week matching up pattern numbers to my Skrdlovice collection, and I realized how little of the Skrdlovice production I was familiar with, particularly patterns from the 60 and 70's.  I wonder if it's a question pf them not being in the Mark Hill's book. But then again, they don't seem to turn up in the Sypka catalogues either.  Are there a few pieces that were made in very limited production runs?

Michael. I think your vase is an example of the Scandinavian influence on Czech design (I know.  According to the Czechs it never happened, but clearly even in the 50's Sarpaneva influenced the Beraneks.). The shape is pure Scandinavian, although the colour is a little unusual.

Dear friends,
the theory about Scandinavian influence of Czechoslovakian glass pieces in 50ties is the theory only.
The political environment on beginning 50ties in Czechoslovakia does ot allow any contact with "decadent" western culture, the "iron curtin" was there. It was impossible for normal people to travel, also people had no access to the journals and newspapers from "west" (even Scandinavia is in fact North for us). Private glasswork of Emanuel Beranek was "nationalised" in 1948, also home of Beranek family was stolen and Emanuel and his sons and nephews were allowed to work in previously their own glasswork like workers.

The hardest times ended in 1956 after Chruscov "disclosure of Stalin cult", our designers got success in Milano and later in Brussel. BUT you must not forget that even when glass pieces had been at that events, not the designers. We visited with Robert Mrs Zertova two years ago. She has got a price in Milano, she hoped that she will be allowed to go there an overtake the price, but it had not happened. 50ties are conidered as the darkest period of communismus in my country.

Sixties were much better and we have evidence about the interaction and inspirations from Scandinavia, in 1967 was in Prague the big exhibition of scandinavian design, Vizner had visited Wirkalla later, etc. Something like thiscould not happen in 50ties.

Thanks Anik and David for your comments on my red vase -- I like it too. :usd:
I think what came into my mind first when I saw it was this Vizner range from 1968 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/SkrdloviceGlassexport1969?authkey=Gv1sRgCI7evcyIuvvvWA#5514556248620448178), which also has an opaque red well, cased in clear glass.
Still I was far from certain. (But if something is high quality and cheap enough I simply have to buy it ;D -- with all the great people on this board there is a chance that it can be identified)

And thanks Jindrich for giving us a deeper insight in the situation Czech designers had to live and work in during post war period.
I wouldn't say that influence is something negative; important is what you make of it -- for instance the trend to organic shapes in the 1950s -- Czech designers did go their own way and developed a very unique style.
One more Skrdlovice piece found its way in my collection today: huge and heavy Vizner 7117/20 in azur. :rah:

Jindrich,

Thanks for that. I wondered if I had simply assumed that the Beranek designs, such as 54036 and then later 5987, must have been influenced by Sarpaneva's orchid vase, which was widely known, much in the same way as Per Lutken's  1956 orchid-type vases were influenced.

However, I think I was remembering what Ricke writes on p. 117 of "Czech Glass" when he states that Emanuel Beranek was shown photographs of Sarpaneva's "Orchidea." His footnotes says he was told this by Dr. Ivo Digrin.  Jindrich is  much better able to evaluate that claim than I am.  I'll add that I don't agree with Ricke's fairly negative assessment of Emmanuel's work. Also, I agree with Micheal's observation that influence isn't necessarily negative. Cross pollination is what makes individual artists part of a broader community.

HI David,
historicians of art sometimes construct hypothesis that sounds reasonable, but ignores reality of daily life in Czechoslovakia in 50ties. One and only source of information for Emanuel in 50ties could be the journal "Tvar". Skrdlovice village was at that time in the middle of nowhere, they had to travel olmost whole day to get there from Prague. I have some copies of Tvar at my web site, the more is still waiting in my office for scanning and downloading.

I am very busy mow in my job, so I cannot browse it systematically, but I suggest to you to browse Tvar and take a look how looked Czechoslovak design at that time, including ceramic, toys, industrial design, furniture and also dresses. Even i tis in Czech, you can get the atmosphere of this hard period from pictures.  No coloured journals, no TV, no internet either :-)

Jindrich:

I understand your point about how in Czechoslovakia access to Western cultural life was very restricted in the 1950's. I was reporting that, according to Dr.Ivo Digrin, Emanuel Beranek was shown a photograph of Sarpaneva's "Orchidea" vase. I don't know who Dr. Ivo Digrin is, so I can't say whether that's likely or not. However, Ricke usually is very careful with his facts, as is shown here where he at least footnotes his claim.

Considering that photographs of the Sarpaneva vase received very wide exposure in the 50's, in magazines ("Life," for example), newspapers, and accounts of the Milan Triennal, is it not possible that somebody could have shown a picture to Emanuel Beranek?

Enjoy yourself in Solihull, you lucky person.

Hi David.
I will put my eye to this issue. However, I will revert your question. I suppose that more likely had Sarpaneva chance to see Emanuel Beranek work. When you will go back to history, you will discover that "scandinavian" glassmaking had been grounded by Bohemian expats in 19th century.

Emanuel had no desire and motivation to copy somebody else, he was noname worker, lost eveything, living his life in love with glass becouse he had lost everything. I am strongly omitting consideration about inspiration or influence from Scandinavia (or Murano) to Emanuel.

Countries without glassmaking tradition were influenced by Bohemian glass rather.

In 60ties it had been changed, but not in 50ties and Emanuel.

Skrdovlice pieces like this really can be appreciated best when handled -- it is so massive and weighs a ton. (BTW, even the red Jezek vase which isn't that massive, weighs almost 2 kg).
I am quite fond of the Azur; it seems to be a signature colour for Vizner and Skrdlovice from the late 1960s/ early 1970s...

Quote

A very interesting question from David; I have been wondering the same.
Perhaps Robert and Jindrich know if many designs were only produced in limited numbers, or just for one season?
Is there some sort of record how many pieces from a range were produced, or how long?

Thanks!

Hi Michel, lovely azur "pineapple" vase by Vizner. Azur is one of my favourite colourways and as you say late 60's early 70's it was very popular as a colourway and can be an indicator of production date to some extent. Jindrich may have more to say on use of Azur at Skrdlovice, having discussed this era of design with Mr Vizner himself on several occasions and having seen later Beranek Glass production at first hand etc... In the 50's there are some colourways that were very short lived. Rosalin or pure salmon pink seems to have been almost entirely 55 and 56 for example. More research has to be done in this area but patterns do form over time. One interesting thing about ebay is how reliable the secondary market is regarding production and historic exports. It is quite clear from this that one of the major importers of Skrdlovice c. 1955-1963 was Canada. Also, regarding rare items or small production runs, quite clearly some items appear regularly, indicating quite large scale production runs and some quite rarely or perhaps once, probably indicating smaller runs. The pattern books do give some indication of initial runs, sometimes specifying in the opening pages "up to a thousand pieces" this is quite common in the fifties. However, this is only true for the initial run and in following years they sometimes made many more. So, in the late 60's and early 70's patterns where it says 1200 pieces I would not at all take it as gospel since some of these are the most common patterns we find. However, some of these, because they are rarely seen, almost certainly were made in 1200 and no more. Beyond this, it is hard to be more precise without trying to talk to someone like Svoboda and going through the books and his memories page by page (which may well be worth doing). In the mean time, I attach some recent purchases, not very good photos, I'm afraid, I am experimenting with a new set up, that needs organising. One piece is a 1953 Labut-Svicen (swan-candle holder) by Veliskova. This colourway seems to have been 53-58. This seems quite a scarce thing which is a surprise, I would have thought a swan, with a free candle holder, would have been a best seller!!

The other piece is an Emanuel Beranek piece with four holes, weighing about 2KG and from memory is 1959, showing how far away from Sarpaneva orchid type vases his own experiments and designs took him. Ricke and Digrin seem very uncharitable in suggesting his efforts were just to make more apertures than Sarpaneva, after all, Emanuel Beranek was a glass designer as well as master blower and this piece does not look anything like a vase from Scandinavia.

I'm afraid I haven't been very perceptive.  I never noticed that Azur was a popular Skrdlovice colourway in the late 60s / early 70s. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/ashamed/ashamed0005.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

Robert, though I greatly dislike any type of glass swan, I am smitten with your candleholder. What a fantastic piece in every respect.

Edited to add:  Michael, I'm impressed that the 7927 weighs so much -- it's deceptive. I'm liking it more and more.

Thanks a lot for your in-depth answer, Robert! - Very interesting information...

I had the same feeling as David, when looking through the pattern books and some CGR articles on Skrdlovice (especially from the 1960s), that many of the patterns (most of the designs of Jirina Zertova for example) never seem to appear anywhere.

So maybe many of those may have been made in 1200 pieces or less -- no wonder I am not able to find them. :usd:
And I guess production of the red Jezek vase may not have seen a second run either...

Your Emanuel Beranek vase is great -- I have never seen a multi-coloured one here; is this the "originial" colourway, and the typical 2-coloured ones like mine (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/Czech?authkey=Gv1sRgCPCtsYSivPC5Dg#5637734640035687010) came later? - Or is it a different pattern?

Just to give Anik something to look at:  Perhaps not the most stunning Skrdlovice piece of all time, but it is designed by Rene Roubicek (PN 7212/17), and, according to Ricke, was a precursor element of a quite elaborate piece designed by Roubicek the following year.  That later piece is shown on p. 296 of Ricke's Czech Glass. Also according to Ricke, the pieces were blown by Palacek.

Great Jelinek piece, Michael.  I haven't seen any around here so I'm going to have to come shopping in Vienna some time.  And I see that Vienna is now the most liveable city in the world. Has that anything to do with the number of Skrdlovice pieces you have been finding.

Two little additions.  A comparatively late Skrdlovice piece by Hora from the period when they were beginning to experiment with cast glass, and an earlier piece by Palacek.

Wow, more lovely Skrdlovice pieces, the Jelinek is especially fine, I would like one of those too! I have the Hora piece but there are larger versions too which are of course desirable. I will have to write to Father Christmas for these pieces ..... In the Czech Republic towards Christmas, I have noticed they have seasonal traditions that are slightly different to UK traditions and I do not fully understand them...... In CZ, one popular thing is a Christmas figure called Jezisek, a "baby Jesus" figure who gives out gifts..... http://www.prague.net/blog/article/52/czech-santa Czech culture is full of fascinating things! No Christmas turkey either, but Christmas carp (fish) instead!! Hearing about these things has been fascinating to me as a British person. I will maybe have to see if hopefully Jezisek will bring me some Skrdlovice ... even though I live in the UK.

Carp is eaten on Christmas eve (we've got the same tradition in Poland) as no meat is eaten on the 24th.  In his Picasa album, Jindrich has got some photos of what he calls the  Carp killing holiday (https://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/ChristmasCarpKillingHollidayPrague23122010#).  I always feel sorry for these poor fish, stuck in small basins with very little oxygen, while people point to which finned creature they wish to take home.  Some people take home live fish while others have the fish knocked between the eyes by the seller and take it home whole.  And in 'fancier' places, they'll gut the fish for you. You should see the queues to get fresh carp... sometimes it's an hour's wait.

Św. Mikołaj (St. Nicholas) comes to children with sweets and presents on the 6th of December.  On Christmas eve, we haven't got Jezisek, but Gwiazdka -- a magical star which brings presents.

Sadly, though I've been very good, neither Father Christmas, Jezisek, nor Gwiazdka will bring me any Skrdlovice this year.  (http://serve.mysmiley.net/sad/sad0040.gif) (http://www.footballerpictures.co.uk)  But it's OK. Next year will surely be a bit better.

Anik,

A sad world where goodness is not rewarded by Skrdlovice. If it's  any consolation (I doubt it), I haven't been very good at all and I'm not getting any either. Santa told me he can't find any Skrdlovice as someone in Vienna and another near Birmingham have cornered the market.  Santa asked how I felt about new socks, or a nice tie. At least I still wear socks.

"More soup Skrdlovice, please."

David, who's cornering the market?  In your album, you've got 89 Skrdlovice pieces.  My favourite Austrian Skrdlovice collector has got half that...

89 Skrdlovice items...  and a 'coon skin hat.  You ain't exactly Oliver Twist.

Thanks all for the nice comments on my Jelinek vase :)

It is absolutely my favourite Skrdlovice piece to date -- such a great design (and huge).
BTW, this time it wasn't found at the local fleamarket, but via German ebay...

Here in Austria we have the "Christkind" who brings presents (a child of uncertain sex with blond curls, wings and a white dress ;D)
And I have heard rumours that some piece of Czech glass may find its way to the pile of Christmas gifts (but no idea if it is Skrdlovice or something else).

Carp is traditionally eaten here as well on 24th of December...

@David: Vienna is a nice place to live in, even for non-Skrdlovice-collectors :usd:
Your Palecek vase is great -- have you wondered as well about the similarity to the Gabrhel Chlum u Trebone vase (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/Czech?authkey=Gv1sRgCPCtsYSivPC5Dg#5671899865446700418)?

Anik,

I told you that I hadn't been good. "Selfish," is what Santa called me. Anyhow, having the number of Skrdlovice pieces roughly equal my age is completely appropriate.  And keep your mitts off the 'coon skin hat.

Michael, I hadn't connected the Palacek to the Gabrhel, which I have in the same colour as you, as well as a slightly different version in purple.  I see some similarity but the Gabrhels are light and airy whereas the Palacek is very solid and massive.  Do you know the year of the Gabrhel design?  The connection between the Palacek and some Vizner designs is the more obvious one to me.  I certainly do like your Jelinek.

Kane,  I've bought a few Czech pieces from Australia, including a 50's Skrdlovice candlestick and a fairly rare bowl  I remember seeing a photograph of a big building somewhere in Australia with the Bohemian Glass logo on it which housed the importer of Czech glass.  I assumed a good bit of Czech glass ended up there, but I don't see much on eBay, Australia.  The seller Fluffysfunhouse used to sell some, though.  It doesn't turn up in antique stores etc?

It rarely turns up anywhere, neither auctions, ebay, charity shops or flea markets. I have bought 2 of my pieces of fluffy who is in South Australia and the other 3 have come from Queensland. I keep my eye out though for pieces. The tango pieces pop up fairly often though, but I don't collect that!

... and I thought I was prone to a wee bit of exaggeration. ::)

How things can change overnight...  I went to the market this morning and saw the Vizner 6823 I had been eyeing for a few weeks.  Originally, the seller was asking 380 PLN for it (about 85 euro) which is far more than I could ever afford or be willing to pay.  Out of curiosity, I asked him how much he's asking now.  He told me 300 PLN (about 67 euro).

He wanted me to hold it again and look at it, which I did though I told him I don't have that kind of money.  Gosh, was it ever lovely.  He said he'll sell it to me for 200 PLN (about 45 euro) considering it'll be St. Nicholas Day soon.

Ohhhh, the temptation of it all.  I started thinking that I could buy it and sell it for a small profit on ebay...

It came home with me.

When my husband saw it, he said it was beautiful and sparkly (shocking words, coming from him) and not to sell it.
The Vizner 6823 is my St. Nicholas / birthday / Christmas present.  ;D   Who would have thought???

By the way, I paid 160 PLN for it...

Great vase, great price!

Here is my purchase of the day. I show it even though it is not Skrdlovice (but close enough :)):

Huge bowl by Jaroslav Svoboda, Svoboda glassworks Karlov. 38 cm diameter, about 5 kg of glass (I do like the fact that the Czech designers are never modest when it comes to the shere amount of glass used ;D)

@David: you are certainly right about the difference in weight between the Gabrhel and the Palecek piece -- still the idea seems to be the same.
I couldn't find any reference when the Gabrhel piece has been designed...
edit: in the Ricke book is a Gabrhel vase in the same style, dated 1967.
The Palecek piece is 1975, so not much doubt which one came first.

Michael, according to Jindrich's Ceskoslovenske Sklo DVD, the Gabrhel piece in your album was designed in 1967.

P.S. My Vizner vase is great... I'd even say it's greater than great!  But it's been packed away now.  I'll have the joy of seeing it again on Christmas eve, when Gwiazdka comes.(http://serve.mysmiley.net/happy/happy0148.gif) (http://www.blueislandsdiving.com)

P.P.S.  The Svoboda bowl is oddly interesting... I really like the way the wide bowl balances on the small paperweight base.

Small... :)
The ball shaped base is 13 cm in diameter, and weighs more than 2 kg I guess.

I like it (though it is very 1980s looking, which is usually not my taste).
It is only half as nice as your Vizner vase , but cost only half the prize :usd:

Well done both of you.  The Vizner is a great buy, Anik, and the Svoboda is very good.  It's at least based on a Skrdlovice design, isn't it? Now if only there's a nice piece of Skrdlovice waiting for me at the collectibles show this morning.

And thanks for pointing me at the fact that the bowl was originally designed for Skrdlovice (I wasn't aware of that). Here it is: PN 8330/36 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/SkrdloviceGlassexport1989?authkey=Gv1sRgCMqW0Lz7qcHkzgE#5514574409100934642)

Good news!  Canada does have a Santa and I can't have been as bad as I thought I had been. All a way of rationalizing me spending a fair bit of cash on the vase in the attached pictures. I found it at a Collectibles Show today in Vancouver. It's huge 39 cm and weighs 4.36 kg.  Svobodova, of course, and in a colourway that really appeals to me.  It is a very striking object.  Also, almost bought a huge Andromeda bowl at the same show, but my friend bought it instead.  He was haggling and I was hoping the deal would fall through and I would step in.  I suppose I have to learn to share the beauty.

A happy little Canadian elf,

David

He thought it was either Czech or American studio glass. Unfortunately, that uncertainty didn't keep the price down. He charges ridiculous prices, but I managed to beat him down to merely extortionate price.

A great piece indeed! Hand made production allows for some some variation and this results in some excellent examples such as this one, I don't think you will easily find a better example of this pattern. These large ones are valued in the several hundred pounds range in the UK, so I doubt you have overspent...

Not a piece high up on my wishlist 8), but at 1,- Euro I gladly bought it:
small Beranek Pulegoso vase, 8.5 cm high.

What is nice about it: this seems to be the very first pattern in the Beranek/Skrdlovice pattern books (at least the ones published on the Pardubice site):
PN 451

Thanks, folks :hi:

It came from one of my favourite charity shops, where it sat in the "cheap glass corner" with a big orange 1,- Euro sticker.
But a rare exception, as they usually charge rather high prices for anything which could be quality...

I am afraid I am starting a collection -- my second Beranek Pulegoso piece :usd:

BTW, does anybody know if these were produced for a long time? (They seem to be quite easy to find...)

Well, not that I see the Pulegoso pieces all the time, but at least not impossible to find (for something which was probably only made in the 1940s?)
Kevin :hi:, thanks a lot for the Season's greetings!
I guess down under is nicer weather than here -- grey, cold, wet...

And one more for the collection:
Roubickova design for Skrdlovice (PN 8848), execution by Beranek glassworks (it is labeled).

We have a couple of antique stores that hafa a few pieces and sell them for 100$+ so I was very very lucky

Is the name of the designer known?

Its ca 19 cm high.

Many thanks

I thought it was 6011.
Those numbers down the bottom are 602277.
21 cm.

The blue Vizner 6823/17, a Petr Hora 7911 -- absolutely beautiful! -- and a small ball vase which I think is the 5394 by Jaroslav Beranek, though with no certainty.

Voilà the promised pics of the ashtray.
Well, at least I am 90% sure that I got the ID right -- after looking through the pattern books from 1952 till 1963 I was quite disappointed not to find anything similar; but in 1951 (where I rarely look) there is an ashtray PN 5134, designed by Milena Veliskova, which seems to be spot on. Mine is just short of 15 cm lenght, so quite close to the 14 cm in the pattern book.

And Santa brought another nice piece of Czech glass, a huge Jurnikl "Hobnail" vase  :rah::ru: :rah:

I've got one more Skrdlovice item.  I didn't post it earlier because I was unsure whether or not it would stay in my collection...  It's one of the oddest / wonkiest vases I've got.

It's massive.  Though only 24cm tall, its barrel-like body measures 45,5cm round at its widest.  It weighs close to 3kg. I'm pretty sure it's 50s Skrdlovice, but don't know the who or when.

Happy Christmas everyone. Such is the flood of lovely Skrdlovice on this thread it is hard to keep up. Davids Stahlikova-Veliskova is very fine indeed. I am sure Michaels attribution on the ashtray is a good one. Aniks vase is Skrdlovice certainly but whether Bohuslav or Emanuel needs a bit of researching. I certainly have an Emanuel vase with a very similar patterning. It was made in several heights and so a shorter version could result in a vase looking very much like this, great glass everywhere... wow...

Took a while to find another piece for my Skrdlovice collection... :)

Veliskova "swan" candleholder, PN 5327/A, nice colourway of peachy pink with light blue.

It has the same label (yellow background with silver script) as my yet unidentified tall vase (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,40346.msg229142.html#msg229142), and my "Andromeda" brown and green bowl (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,38109.0.html).
Any idea how long this label was used? -- I would guess it is an earlier one...

I guess I'll have to repeat myself for the 50th time... What a lucky find, Michael!  And a labeled one too.  But I do prefer Robert's, with his less feminine colours.

My collection grew by one a few weeks ago, but I forgot to post a picture.  It's a Palecek 7632 / 18cm vase.  The vase is so much more interesting in real life -- it glitters in the sunlight, and the clear top rim gives a really interesting effect, depending on how you're looking at it.  I'm very pleased with it.

Good photograph, Anika. I've seen a similar piece on the net recently, probably listed as Murano, and I wasn't sure about it. Yours looks very good, so thanks for clearing that up.  I'll have a couple to add when I get home.

David, still in Maui?

I agree, not my favourite style either, but quite nice and delicate in real life (and I'm sure you wouldn't have been able to resist at 5,- Euro :))

I really don't like glass swans (though I do like real ones... fascinating creatures).  But I am quite taken with these.
Michael, 5,- euro was a ridiculously wonderful price.   :)

At €5 I would have bought a dozen. I haven't seen any cheap Skrdlovice for ages.

The prices are rising here in Australia, too! My last piece in the St Vincent de Paul was $25. At the Salvation Army everything Czech is $70 or more!

:smg:  I'm very excited about my newest addition... a gorgeous 8611 / 21cm signed VIZNER F. to the bottom.

I was hoping it would be by Vizner's own hand, but a kind soul pointed out that there is a possibility it was signed by a factory worker, and not the designer.

Feel free to ooze with envy.  I can handle it. ;D

Still growing nicely :)

A lovely mid 50s Stahlikova vase in peachy pink and light blue, PN 54108 (at least I think; has got some similarities to PN 54112, too -- Robert will know),
and a great Vizner piece, PN 7411/19, with remains of a Skrdlovice label.

And the Stahlikovas keep pouring in!  Another one I haven't seen before, and a very good one, too. The Vizner is great also and a little more familiar.  Well done again, Michael. You really are developing a great Skrdlovice collection with a great mixture of the rare and more common.

Thanks Anik and David!
I am very fond of my new Stahlikova vase -- it is such a nice design, and though surely not as valuable as the Vizner piece, it is most probably rarer -- and more dear to me...

David, I am deeply impressed by your new additions -- the Stahlikova design in your first pic is on my wishlist as well. (There is one of these in an antique shop here, but unfortunately too expensive for me).
And the Emanuel Beranek torpedo shape vase is extremely good as well.

More excellent Skrdlovice! David and Michael certainly find some great pieces. The Stahlikova attribuion is correct Michael, I am pretty sure about that, your attributions tend to be accurate. I have one of these vases and really the quality is really amazing and can only be fully appreciated when holding them I think, they have a wonderfully smooth quality feel and attention to detail in the application, as with David's 60's Stahlikova too, there is a real attention to careful glassmaking, making these pieces, I am sure, undervalued currently, but us collectors can at least appreciate them fully at a not too expensive price,

Before your hearts start to bleed over what a poor gal I am with my small Skrdlovice collection, I did get a few more items, including these vases.  The first is what I think is the 5988 in a really wonderful dark green and purple.  It's 25cm tall.  The second is the 5551 by Rudolf Beranek.  What makes it especially exciting -- at least for me -- is the "II" marked on the base.  It's 20,5 cm tall and weighs 2357g.  A good, heavy piece.

Nice pieces Anik, the Jan Beranek in unusual striking colours! That Vizner is excellent too David, one of my favourite designs of his. I understand from Jindrich that Mr Vizner quite liked this design, when they did the Bruntal exhibition together I understand that Mr Vizner helped select the display pieces and this was one of the patterns he chose to display. I like it, it is very uncompromising and heavy for its height, it really dominates a space as the wide base spreads the colour.....

 David, I'd love to see the Vizner 7412 in real life. Such an interesting design -- kind of sci-fi-ish, isn't it?

Robert, thank you for the kind words and for confirming that the green and purple vase is indeed the 5988. I greatly appreciate it.

Michael, do you know why your Stahlikova is a second?  My R. Beranek vase is a couple centimeters shorter than in the designs book which might account for the II.

By the way, I'm feeling slightly envious of you gentlemen.  It seems that your glass collections are just a bit classier and more desirable than mine.  But that's OK. I'll catch up with you one day.

@Anik: I think you already have a really classy Skrdlovice collection, and it will grow I am sure (I just saw that you added a beautiful Wünsch vase)
Each of us has some pieces which are harder to find (like your Svoboda lampbase, your Vizner 8611, only to mention a few), and several pieces which are more common...

We will never catch up with David anyway -- he is adding one great piece after the other atm to his already fabulous collection

@Robert: I was hoping for a comment on my Jelinek ashtray -- I thought that would be just the thing for you...
Am I right in thinking that it is a rather "scarce" range? (That I have never seen a piece of it before might not mean much)
I would really appreciate any more info!

Thanks, Michael, for the kind words.  I have been lucky the past couple of months, but with much help from Anik and Robert in many ways. Great people, not just wise Skrdloviceans.  I think I've exhausted my budget and luck now., though. All three collections are good. The collection I'd like to see is Jindrich's. I wonder what he's got stored away in his fabled garden shed. Didn't he say he had 500 Skrdlovice pieces?

The Jelinek ashtray is great Michael. The vase of this pattern is in the Graham Cooley collection, as was dispayed at King's Lynn HiLo Sklo exhibition, possibly visible on Mark Hill's site, on his blog archive, but other than that, I have never seen one. I don't know about numbers but Jindrich has a fine Skrdlovice collection. He has some great pieces from several areas of Czech glassmaking and always surprises me when discussing glass, as he has some interests that you may not necessarily expect. Most people would not know he has a real enthusiasm for many years relating to Victorian era "spa glass," the ruby cut to clear type stuff, for example. He admires a lot of types of glass but of course Skrdlovice glass is a definite passion he shares with us. Trouble for most of us is, "so much glass, so little shelving!"

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Robert -- very much appreciated!
I just was so excited when I spotted the ashtray on a local auction site (and able to ID it though the crappy pic was shot against a dark background).
Thanks for pointing me to Mark Hill's site; I found this nice pic (http://markhillpublishing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/page22_10.jpg) showing Mark Hill and Graham Cooley with the Jelinek vase from this range far in the background :)

@David: If I look through our thread here I am quite impressed what we have managed to collect in only one year time; and I am sure we havn't exhausted our luck yet -- there will be some more good and very good Skrdlovice pieces coming our way.

BTW, I am so very far from Jindrich's 500+ pieces, and already running out of shelf space (and no garden shed for storing near or far)

Hi All!

I just arrived back with a new vase from the Collector's Market here in Sydney.
I've been to the catalogues and have worked out that it is from 1955.
It's design number 5515. It's a greenish brown and has a nice uranium reaction all over.
My question is though: Who is the designer?
I can't read the name. I'm guessing that it is : A Marešová?

Kevin,

I can't make the name out either and I can't see anything in any of my references that would allow me to make anything other than a wild guess.  It's a great find as I've never seen this piece before. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see some pictures, please.

Hi David. Thanks for the reply.
I have not been able to pull any more out yet either.
I remembered the shape from looking through the catalogues.

I've recently looked again through the catalogues and I think they might have changed.
Has anyone else noted that there seems to a different version of the drawings?

It glows well with the blue light.
I've never done photos in the dark so my first three attempts are a bit embarrassing.
I've taken about ten photos but I'll just tender these:

and thanks again

Kevin, a very nice piece!
I have seen this model here at the flea market once, but the peak was chipped so I didn't buy it...
On the 20thcenturyglass website is a version in blue/green (you have to scroll down a little): http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/bohemian_glass/skrdloviceglass_home.htm (http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/bohemian_glass/skrdloviceglass_home.htm)

Unfortunately I cannot make out the name in the patternbook either...

I added an interesting piece to my collection today, a tall candle holder by Petr Hora, PN 8804/28 (has a red Skrdlovice label)

Thank you, Michael.  I found my Spinar vase (https://picasaweb.google.com/105348959949603419807/SkrdloviceCollection#5717757496714036738) at the market a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately, it's got a rather large bruise near the bottom. :(  But it is an attractive vase nonetheless.

Do you think your Jindrich Beranek vase was made at Skrdlovice?  Or is it possible that it's one of his Austrian productions?  I've have never seen one in such a light colourway.

Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on March 23, 2012, 10:44:18 PM
His Austrian pieces are (almost) always signed, and have a circular pontil mark.
So definately Skrdlovice.

It is a really deep inky blue (simlar to my Stahlikova ashtray (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/Czech?authkey=Gv1sRgCPCtsYSivPC5Dg#5600001754597230130)) -- I think the pic is a little misleading.
It's a great colourway...

I could have bought the shorter version of this design as well in clear and brown, but it was a little too expensive.

Oh my, Michael, what happened to it?  It looks, errrr, 'original'...  has it got a 'II' on the base?

I don't think wish lists ever get smaller... no matter how many items come our way.
It's a darn good thing we've got a whole lifetime.  ;)
Title: Re: My Skrdlovice collection is growing nicely...
Post by: rocco on March 24, 2012, 05:08:58 PM
No II :)

I have seen several pieces of this design, and I would say all of them are a little bit "orignial" -- but that's what I love about them....
David's version (https://picasaweb.google.com/lasilove/CzechoslovakiaSkrdlovice#5687990055838309378) has an even more pulled lobe (and lovelier colours).
The one in Dsseldorf e-museum (http://duesseldorf.emuseum.net/code/emuseum.asp?style=text&currentrecord=1&page=search&profile=objectsde&searchdesc=skrdlovice&quicksearch=skrdlovice&action=quicksearch&wasaggregate=1&style=single&currentrecord=7) is quite similar to mine.

Yes, the wishlist is too long...

Hi All!

As an update to my post earlier this month about a vase by A. Maresova.

I was wondering about the name on the catalogue which was hard to read. It only involves three vases: 5513, 5514 and 5515.

I trecently bought a vase 5515 here in Sydney. I posted four pictures of it.

I emailed Jindrich about the identity of this designer: "I have found the drawing, but I find it difficult to read the designer".

He replied to me:

Hi Kevin, seems to me that it was this lady:

Mareov Smolkov Alice
* 7.3.1922 Hradec Krlov (Hradec Krlov) (Česk republika (Czech Republic)) sklo

All best to Australia
Jindrich

I then went about looking for more information on Alice Maresova-Smolkova.
I've not found much at all.

About the only reference I have is from:http://www.glass.cz/list%5Cframe.asp?co=hist.htm&pid=13&lang=cz

The gist of this relates to the period after 1945 with the return of Profesor Karel Stipl as head of the "Umeleckoprumyslov skole v Praze".

She was one of the former students of Jaroslav V. Holecek who joined with Stipl's students  Matura, Hlava, Klinger etc there in Prague.

The links between the "Umeleckoprumyslov skole v Praze" and "Umelecka remesla Skrdlovice" are a little unclear to me.

I've recently been looking at the sticker: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php?topic=45009.0

It lead me on to researching the UR idea.

Is the vase with the blue UR sticker a unique piece done by one of the Prague students at Skrdlovice?

I'm just tossing up a few ideas. As I said it is unclear to me. Is there somewhere I can read more?

Hi Kev,
seems like you are becoming addicted to Czech glass like many of us here :)

If you are interested more deeply in the history of post WW2 Czech glass I would recommend the book "Chech Glass 1945-1980, Design in an Age of Adversity", by Helmut Ricke.
Most of the pieces shown there are not likely to be found by amateur collectors like us, but a profound and well researched book with tons of information about Czech glass making...

The R piece you refer to is surely not unique (as I have got the same ;D); still the cut pieces seem to have been produced in far smaller numbers than the hotworked ranges.

In the Ricke book is a small chapter about the UUR: "...Evzen Jokl ... opened the Glass Cutting Workshop in Prague in 1954. Three years later, the workshop was placed under the administration of the Center for Artistic Craft (UUR). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, three to five cutters realized the designs of Milena Veliskova, Maria Stahlikova, and Vera Liskova..."

Finally, some Skrdlovice to report. The first is a Beranek knobbly, 18.5 cm tall, that I thought might be clear when I bought it. In fact, it's a very light blue/gray, which turns out to be very nice. The second is a Stahlikova/Veliskova in a slightly different colourway than the one I have already. This one is a lighter blue than the other one and surrounded by clear rather than a steely blue.  Very clean. This is first bargain priced piece of Skrdlovice I've had for ages:  $15.99. The third one is a Beranek bird, which I bought with the intention of calling it Anik. However, it's not nearly attractive enough, so another name will be assigned. It is ugly.

Nice haul David. IMHO the bird's not ugly: reminds me of the Martin Brother's eccentric grotesques  the 'Wally Birds'. The other pieces are great too!

David, great items!

By the way, the Beranek birds aren't supposed to be 'attractive' -- their wonderful charm lies in their quirkiness (or even 'ugliness'). It's a fantastic birdie.

Very nice, David!
I love the Stahlikova jardiniere -- I think it's even more attractive than the vase from this range.

I (have to) stay away from the Exnar birds -- they wouldn't be met with any understanding in my household ::)

Another gorgeous Vizner vase, PN 6859/25.
Quite a special colourway -- peach with a 2-coloured core in light blue and green.

It is really substantial, 26 cm high and weighing about 4 kg.

The same version was in the Bruntal exhibition 2010 (links to Jindrich's pics from the display (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/FrantisekViznerSklo19592010ExhibitionBruntal42010?authkey=Gv1sRgCOy82omz-ND10AE#5458552071796582994), and the catalogue (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/FrantisekViznerSklo19592010#5461150892861928290))

Thanks guys! :)
3-coloured pieces from this range seem to be less common, so I am very happy.

I compared the colours to some of my other pieces, and they match perfectly to this E. Beranek vase (https://picasaweb.google.com/107330317087089352634/Czech?authkey=Gv1sRgCPCtsYSivPC5Dg#5601795221355985426) (minus the light blue).
So I would think Skrdlovice production rather than Beranek glassworks?

It looks Skrdlovice rather than Beranek to me, judging by the colours and the bubbles.

Thanks, David; so I should assume that the Beranek vase is maybe from the 1970s/80s as well -- I would have thought this was an earlier colourway....
Or it was used for a long time.

Just a coincidence, E. Beranek designs were not generally made after about 1965 or even earlier, the same colours were available but the factory had moved on design-wise by the time Vizner designs came along,

Thanks for the info, Robert!
So can you date the peach coloured Vizner vase approximately?

I thought that this colourway for this particular design hinted at newer production...  :(

Michael, it's a beautiful item.  Once again, very, very lucky you!

Sorry Michael, I cannot be very precise. I think it is a lovely example, Jindrich will know the colourways of Vizner pieces better than me, you could email him. I think it looks nice 70's, but I could be wrong so I hesitate to comment further. There are some very distinctive colours that clearly shout later Beranek glass production but this doesn't shout it to me..... Surely this piece did not cost you five euros! Very impressive vase, I think,

Thanks, Robert and Anik!
Judging from the colours (which don't look very modern to me) I would also think 1970s for the vase; and I would guess that the pieces chosen for the Bruntal exhibition were rather Skrdlovice than Beranek production.
Looking at the Beranek website it seems that recently this range was only produced in the 6 cm version and in stronger colours...

And unfortunately this was not a 5 Euro purchase (my Venini vase was ;D); it cost me 60 Euro, which is still a fair prize I think.

Just for the sake of clarity... I wasn't suggesting the Vizner is newer.  Rather, I was eluding to my ignorance regarding Skrdlovice production and colourways.  Sorry for not being clearer about it.

Michael, though 60 euros is not 6 euros, I still think you got it for a great price!  Lucky guy.

Anik  :-*, I understood what you were meaning to say...
But no need to think you are ignorant in any way, I am only estimating here as well.

It's just my gut feeling that this colour combination is not so recent.

Grown by one again.

My friend called me last week from Basel fleamarket if I was interested in a blue vase with Skrdlovice label -- I was :)
Arrived yesterday, and it is really nice.

I think it is PN 54181 by Jaroslav Beranek, although the size in the pattern book is 22 cm -- mine is 27 cm high; same as another one in a different colourway I saw a few months ago at the fleamarket...

Great acquisition, Michael. It's a very good design, so sinuous and fluid. The colours in yours are quite spectacular.

I did manage to get a fairly good Vizner piece, 17.5cm tall in two colours.  Judging from the wear on the base, I'm certain it's an older piece.

Wow, this is another lovely colourway, David!
Would look good beside my orange one :D

And if the pics on the Beranek website are a hint, I would think that pieces with more than one colour around the core were not produced recently...

I also got a rather 'interesting' Jezek vase for my collection.

Three great additions, Anik. Of course, I really like the two Vizners.  I don't see as many of the round vortex pieces.

I'll add my two from a local show. They were bought from different sellers, but designed very close to each other.  I haven't seen a cranberry fade piece like this before. it has the remnants of a yellow label on it, a fair amount of wear on the bottom, and the bottom of the interior shows a few years of dust.

After some time two new Skrdlovice pieces for me:

Ladislav Palecek, vase 7632/ 25 and ashtray 7632/ 10.

The vase is quite impressive due to the sheer size...

Today's purchase (at 6,- Euro a little more expensive than the Palecek pieces from my previous post ;D): my first Oliva design, PN 7919/ 21 -- huge and quite attractive.

6 euro and a little more expensive than the Palecek pieces???  :o
OK, that's it...  I'm moving to Vienna, Austria.

(Michael, a super-fantastic buy!!!  I can't get over the prices you find all your gorgeous glass for. You must be the luckiest Czech glass collector under the sun.)

I am often surprised as well that I get good glass for such little money (but feel reassured -- not all the time).
BTW, I had to bargain it down from 7,- Euro ;D

On the other hand the cut Stahlikova vase cost a fortune...

I am sure there is one or the other bargain at the Polish fleamarkets to be found :)

Another interesting Skrdlovice addition, from a range not often seen (CGR calls this range "Sabina"):
ashtray by Miloslava Svobodova, PN 6624

And here I was, thinking you had hit a dry patch, not having posted any Czech glass in a while.
Nice item, Michael.  Just think of the wow-factor when you find the matching vase...  :)

Edited to add:  Perhaps we should begin a new Skrdlovice thread?  This one is getting very long, and as a result, becoming more difficult to refer back to. Just a thought.

Anik, good idea -- should we ask a mod to close this thread?
Then we can start another one like "OUR Skrdlovice collections are growing nicely..." ;D

And yes, I wish I would have found the vase -- the colours would show much nicer in a taller piece...

I reckon you two should put together a display of your present collections and post them in the "Themed" Collections for us all to admire.  I rarely see Czech glass in Melbourne and when I do it is usually more of the same.  I would love to see the effect of a grouped display of your respective collections.
