Title: 2 Vintage Textured Glasses that need Id's please
Post by: mtmandar on January 03, 2013, 06:06:47 PM
1) Looks like the glacier/everest series, but not completely. Pedestal tumbler - 6" tall x 2 5/8" top diameter and an icy texture. Exhaustive search online through many glass makers turned up nothing. Three mold lines go all the way to the base.

2) Exhaustive search came up with some vendors selling these highballs as Tapio Wirkkala - Mesi, but I think these are too uniform to be that make. 7" tall x 2 3/8" wide top diameter. Candle wax texture. No makers stamp or sticker

Hi, the highballs are Durobor, much more common than Mesi, although often sold as them.  I know as I was the sucker once.

Hello mtmandar and welcome to the board. Would you post just one item per topic please, so we can keep track of what we're discussing and file the topic in the right place after it's been identified, many thanks. :)

Thank you for the Durobor id - I really appreciate it. :)

So sorry about posting two items, I guess when I saw 4 pics max I thought 4 items max...

I can repost the other item alone if you'd like...

I forgot to welcome another Canadian to the board.  I'm in Surrey, BC.

Once you've held a real Mesi in your hand you'll find it easy to tell them apart from the Durobor.  They are much finer, with thin, clear bottoms.  I have found Durobor in Canada, but no Mesi. Those I had to buy from Finland.

Thanks for the welcome David,

Do you mean to say that the Durobor are not desirable, or vintage? - I can't seem to find any info on dating the Alaska series.  Are they not collectible?  I'd love to know because I was intending on selling them...

I'm letting my prejudices show. The Durobor is sellable, it's just not as nice as (or the price of) Mesi.  I see  some on eBay and at shows, but I don't know the price it gets.
