Title: Lampwork paperweight - id help please
Post by: SimonD on July 04, 2007, 08:38:43 PM
I'd appreciate your help in identifying this pansy lampwork paperweight. It measures 2.61 inches diameter by 2.1 inches high and has a brown and yellow flower with stem and three leaves. The leaves have two rows of bubbles running along them. The centre of the flower has a complex millefiori cane though it is not very distinct. The flower rests on a swirl ground made of 26 milky white rods. The base is concave with a wide rim that has been worn matt with age. The weight seems quite heavy ie made of lead crystal.

hello simon, it is a viola rather than a pansy and i think it maybe chinese dating from the 1930s. the latticinio basket looks very similar to a chinese example i have.

kindest regards theglassnut...

Hi Simon,

Wonderful paperweight.  New England Glass Company c.1870.  I think this is incredibly rare.

No chance that this is Chinese.

I don't have anything like this, but check out my tutorial on Poinsettias to distinguish Chinese from the real thing.

Not necessarily. Many companies used a frosted basal ring and a concave polished base, including ones from Bohemia, America and France. Anyway, the frosted part looks far too wide to be Clichy.

I will trust Allan's attribution to NEGC. As for rarity - it must be extremely rare - I cannot see a similar weight in John Hawley's definite book on the subject!

A few extra observations:

  • The whole composition (leaves, bud, off center flower) is typical NEGC
  • The leaves with the double rows of bubbles are also NEGC
  • The base looks like NEGC to me but that is an external detail that can change with time (and refinishing)

  • One thing that does not match is the number of rods in the latticinio, which should be 32, not 26.  Simon, can provide a full picture of the bottom so I can count the rods myself.

Thank you everyone for their valued information.

As there are queries about the base, here is a photo of this too:

I count 26 rods in the swirl, which is 6 short of the normal 32 expected of a NEGC.

here is an interesting comparison, it has the same small bubbles along the leaves. and it is identified as NEGC. so i stand corrected.  160135031688
