Title: Blue pressed glass vase ID?
Post by: Max on August 12, 2006, 06:42:55 PM
I almost bid on this vase...it looked really familiar, but I couldn't find anything on it anywhere.  In the end I chickened out and didn't bid.  Can anyone tell me about it?

Thank you.  :D

Hello Max,

I too was tempted by this vase, I already have an amber example and have been trying to find who made it for some time but thus far I have been unable to find anything like it.

From a distance it looks like it has been acid cut, however, the textured bands are a moulded effect. I am thinking Czech, though it does have a slight look of D'Avesn, to my mind.

Thank you for the great photos Steven. We'll have to keep our eyes open for information I suppose.  It looks like a well made piece, and if the blue one had been cheaper, I'd have bought it.  It looks lovely in amber by the way.  :D

Thanks Max, I like the blue though, that deep blue looks quite an unusual colour for moulded glass of the period. I agree the price seems high, particularly when you factor in the postage costs, though if it turns out to be by a good maker it may be a great bargain. I only paid £10.00 for mine, though it does have a burst bubble to the interior. The seller didn't have any idea of origin and was even describing it as Whitefriars!  :D

I used to have mine on display next to a loop handled vase, attributed to Pierre D'Avesn for Daum's Verrerie D'Art Lorrain plant and there were similarities in colour & finish,  Verlys too made vases with texture in imitation of acid cutting and the colour looks like their amber, though I have never seen a design like this with horizontal bands from them & I would expect it to be signed. I still think it's more likely to be Czech. It is a fine piece though and does look wonderful on display.
