Title: What are these any clues
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on May 06, 2006, 03:37:23 PM: Does anybody know what these are there are 12 in total , flowers inside a glass casing, with a metal rim and some sort of fitting as if they would slot into something, they measure just over 1 inch in length , they look to have some age, but as to what they are called or used for I have not got a clue

Post by: taylog1 on May 07, 2006, 02:53:07 PM: bit puzled by the pics - top thre look like 1/4 of an egg (the band across the top), but the last one looks more like 1/2 an egg (from the shape of the botom) - are they all the same shape ?

[i've no idea what they are :D , just trying to get a mental picture)

Post by: Anne E.B. on May 07, 2006, 06:19:07 PM: I've looked at the only bag I have with a clasp, and although it is a modern one, it looks pretty much the same basic design. The metal bit at the bottom, in your last pic. would fit into the metal frame of the bag. The horizontal indentation is where it would meet the other 'bit' on the opposite side of the frame. This would fit inside the horizontal indentation when closed/clasped together ..... I think :P

If I'm wrong, it wasn't me who wrote this :lol:

Aren't these place holders for a table set? In the Victorian days they would put cards with their guests names in elegent little holders (the Victorians had something for everything!).

In the 40's ladies would wear plain dresses and this type of clip would be put on at the neckline. Usually I have seen them only made in diamante or bakelite, but they looked very pretty and obviated the need to wear any other jewellery.

PS I wans't there in the 40's, at least not as an adult, but period costume is one of my hobbies and I used to do costumes for an amateur dramtic group years ago. Emmi

Post by: vidrioguapo on May 09, 2006, 07:52:40 PM: Hi Pamela....always had an interest in period costume, especially from the 20's onwards. Fortunately the Amdram group I was with had a penchant for doing plays from those years, Noel Coward etc. I was responsible for obtaining (on a small budget) clothes suitable for any particular period. Some things I would buy, some I would hire, some I would design and make - I have no particular skills in sewing, but know from my past experience in the theatre as a dancer, that as long as it looks right, doesn't matter too much how badly it is made. (tricks of the trade...stage lighting etc. you can "wing it" as we say). And they only had to hold up and stay together for the period of performances anyway. I became known as "the bag lady" as I could always be found walking the streets loaded with bags from charity shops etc.It is surpising how many period clothes can be made from relatively modern iems, with a bit of adjustment, as long as the fabric is "in period" one can work miracles. So that's it in a nutshell...I am/was just an unskilled person with some imagination helped by research.
