Title: Iridescent Glass Vase
Post by: goyjus on September 30, 2012, 05:20:30 PM
Hello. I'm fairly certain the attached is a modern piece of glass. But does anyone have any clues regarding the maker?

I had one of these a while back. I loved the thick applied texture.

It had a made in Taiwan label on the base.

Cheers
Mel

Thanks Mel. I had suspected it might have been the work of our friends in the East. Cunning little devils, aren't they?

wow Mel! that is very interesting to know as these have been on the board before and there has been debate about these being by Kralik I think.  I'm very interested because I bought one a while ago for referecence.
They are beautifully made, good quality pieces.  Very interesting that yours had a made in Taiwan label on.
I'lll find the other thread now and link it here.

link here - mine is the same as yours and appears further down the thread.  I did not get a response from my email btw (reference the information near the end of that thread)

The plot thickens. Interesting - thanks for posting. The link takes me back to the home page not to a specific thread. I'd be really interested to see it if possible...

yes, I had to log in before I could access the thread.

Ok, I've had a trawl through my old pics and I've found a base shot.

No label it was on the other of a pair, sold as a modern art glass vase.

Would explain why they flew out if people thought they were Kralik.  :o

Can't comment on the others in this thread but mine were definitely not.

hope it helps
Mel

mine looks like yours.  And wow, given I own one and can look at the quality of it I have to say I'm seriously impressed at the finished article.

So does anyone have a strong feeling whether mine is Kralik or from Taiwan?

My strong feeling is not Kralik.
Another strong feeling I have is that Romanian glass is very underrated.
I do think these are gorgeous and well made pieces.    :)

Sue do you think this might have been made in Romania sold out of Taiwan?

 ;D
eeeeek!
I can't comment on Japanese or Taiwan glass or importers - I don't know anything about them!
Why would glass get transported between Romania and Taiwan? It would seem to me to be an unwarranted expense. But there's a lot of that around these days.  ::)
I'm frankly just stuck on these pieces. I think they're lovely and well made. I don't think they're too old.
These may well be inspired by old designs, some folk may have the older "originals" if they exist.

Sorry I was only asking because Mel had id'd them earlier in the thread as hers had a Taiwan label on it.
I wondered whether they might have been made in Romania and imported into Taiwan for wholesale shipping round the world.
Otherwise the assumption with a Taiwan label on the base would be made in Taiwan I guess.

It's a possibility...  ;D
Romanian glass is found in antique centres, charity shops, boot sales and flea markets, in TKMaxx and on internet auction sites. I've not seen any being sold "first-hand" apart from in TKMaxx. The only exception I know of is Ioan Nemtoi, who is currently working in Canada and in his own name.

The only Taiwanese glass I've seen is in the form of small tea-light holders and bowls, with a cloudy design of white or pastel blue in clear, (which looks very like some Kosta Boda), but they have labels on the base reading "Partylite Made in Taiwan", with an image of a sort of building with three towers on it.
