Title: local "99cents Only" weight finds (Pics gone / links broken)
Post by: jemimamoon on April 20, 2005, 04:17:16 PM
Well couldn't pass up the deal on these weights.  I thought I should share.  I bought nine of them.  All different.  Here are some pics of one of them.  I have been attempting to take decent photos of them but to no avail.  Does anyone have any hints on the lighting that works the best?? I will post the others whenI get some good ones.

Hi Jemimamoon,

Nice weight - even with the stray bubbles in the dome.
Looking forwarding to the other photos  :)

For "best photo lighting" you could try constructing a "light tent" of some form but that's not easy without buying a proper piece of kit.

I usually just use a plain white background that does not show joins or creases. I then check for how much of the room, me and other "objects" are reflected in the dome and try to eliminate as many as possible by closing curtains or hanging up a screen of some kind. I always leave a single daylight source to let the camera do its auto-focus job.

Having got the basic setting, I go for shots without flash and with. But I let the camera pre-focus and then I stand between the daylight and the weight to get rid of much of the other refelctions before taking the shot. With the non-flash shots I sometimes find the reflections are too much but with the flash usually most of the unwanted stuff is killed off.

If there are room lights on - I switch them off. If it's dark anyway and I have to use artificial lighting (which is quite frequent in dear old England) I always use flash to get the best colour balance but I also use a halogen light for the stages up to pre-focus and then try with the lamp on and off.

When using flash, there can occasionally be too much glare bounced back from the white background - particularly troublesome for profile views or top views where the weight has a clear ground. By adjusting the distance between the background and the weight much of the flare is avoided. For the top view shots, I stand the weight on a clear plastic support giving about 3 inches clearance from a sheet of plain white paper.

For images of the base of a weight, it is useful to try regular flash and non-flash shots but also to take the image using an open window as a background and with no flash. That way, subtle features of the base finish can be highlighted - but the weight needs to be moved around to find the best view.

Wow!    Nice! :D  Well worth 99cents IMNSHO!

Unlike some people  :P    I feel these sort of weights, which I think are often considered 'beneath' the attention of 'real' collectors, are well worth collecting, purely for aesthetic reasons.

In other words, just because they're pretty!

I totally agree Leni.  That is the reason I bought them.

Thanks

Umm...I agree too.  A collection of anything always looks great as a group.

As I thought that thought  :?  I suddenly wondered how paperweight fanciers display their pieces?    I had this mental image of tiny shelves made to fit paperweights, with each weight tilted attractively and lit from the back with a little LED type bulb...I can almost see it!  Wow! That would be a FABULOUS room feature, wouldn't it?

<wipes dribble from lips>

I might patent this idea!   :D [/i]

The largest collections have seen just spread every where, on shelves, in cabinets.  Many on angled stands, others on their butts and some on lit bases.

Others have specially built display cabinets, I recall one collector that had all the displays made by Makepeace and they were works of art themselves - I found myself more interested in the woodwork than the weights.

Oh Dear! what a great thread. I also agree if they are pretty why not.  I am learning a great deal as this is really an unexplored area for me. Over the years I have picked up quite a few weights and like most people have them stored in a small curio cabinet with no light. Now my mind is twirling on the possiblities of better display. Another project in the works. Terry

As an off-shoot of my glass collectiong, I have also started to 'collect'   cabinets to keep my glass in!

I have quite a collection now of the little Edwardian inlaid and painted display cabinets.  It's quite hard to get hold of small ones, which fit in modern houses, as most of them are quite big.

I keep most of my paperweights in with the rest of the glass and other 'eclectics'    in these cabinets, (as in this pic) http://tinypic.com/4lm1w7

But what I am really looking for is one of those glass-topped-and-sides display tables which are made just for displaying such items!   :D   I have seen a couple around, but they tend to be quite expensive - even the 'repro's  :(

If anyone sees one around going not-to-expensive      Please let me know!

Wouldn't it be cool to have a glass topped coffee table with a shallow box type affair under the glass to display things.

I'm sure it must've been done before, but it'd be a great way to display similar size paperweights, all bunched up and pretty together en masse...mmm!

Glass top display coffee tables

You can find them in the Indonesian furniture stores in Amsterdam, cheap, cheerful and chunky. Should be similar dives in London

Well a glassed topped coffee table would be interesting, but it would have to be large to hold all mine. As you can see, my little cabinet is overflowing. http://tinypic.com/4qh103  so I guess I must do some thinking on this. Terry

Top shelf, inside the cabinet, fourth one in - yellow.  Where have I seen that one recently Terry?  Did you put it on the board for some reason?

Or have I seen it somewhere else...   :?  :?

Max you have a good eye. Yes I have put that on the board. Its one I recieved as a gift and really don't care for, but what are you going to do? I have photographed all my weights individually, but can't seem to find the time to lable the pics properly. As an offshoot of my other glass collecting, this branch has certainly grown and maybe its time I took it more seriously. Terry

I found a GREAT shelf at IKEA .  You can actually see my glass now.  Expedite is the name of the shelving unit.  Comes in two different sizes and three different colors.  lets the light through and shape definition.  I have posted this photo before regarding my yellow finials.   So my two cents.  Cheers

I have posted this photo before regarding my yellow finials.

In her book 'Paperweights', Sibylle Jargstorf shows many examples of pointy things, very like your 'finials' in shape, and says they were made in pairs as mantlepiece ornaments.

I think this solves the problem of what your 'finials' are, and you can stop looking for great big jars to fit them into

You shelving does indeed make a lovely display, but for my collection I think I need something enclosed, if my glass is to be safe from cats & grandchildren!

Glass behind glass is a travesty in my humble opinion but you do have a real problem to address. An alternative may be to take some broken glass and create no-go areas in the approaches to the unbroken glass.

Why do I get the feeling we are at the start of silly season

Third shelf down Terry, the biiiig turquoise and then the yellow weight...they're super!  I do like biiiig things - I mean if you're going to have something, might as well make an impact with it, right?

Can't help but think Terry's weights would look nice in my 'soon to be bought, hopefully' Indonesian display table...   If I ever find one!

I don't know about Indonesian, but I've decided to invest in one of these:  http://www.elisabethdrake.co.uk/   :D

I've been waiting for an antique version to come up on ebay, but I they aren't that frequent and I've missed a couple, so I thought, hey, let's go for a reasonable repro!

Terry's weights do indeed look fantastic!    I *love* the swirly pink one on the second shelf!  :D  There I go - pink again!

:? Do different people's computers respond differently to the same images from tinypic?
I ask because I find Terry's picture so pixylated and grainy that although I can see a colourful mass of lumps of glass, I cannot make anything out in any recognisable detail! It's most frustrating! There is an odd shaped something in blue and yellow on the top that I'd love to see!
 :D Cheers, Sue

I can see Terry's pics clearly, and the enlargement is even more magnificent!   :D  What browser do you open pictures in, Sue?  Could it be worth trying a different one to see if that helps?   :?

Any expert here able to offer advice - is it something to do with settings?  I'm no good when it comes to settings!

To Max, Leni, and Sue, thanks for the interest you have shown, I will take each weight you mentioned and try to descibe each one. The first will be the yellow one, yes a good sized weight. http://tinypic.com/4qrara  This is made by Gentile Glass Star City West Virginia. This is impressed in the bottom of the weight but couldn't get a picture of the mark and its even hard to see. Another interesting thing about this weight is that it sweats. I remember we had a thread on sweating glass which explained why it does that. Well this is the first one, but work beckons and I will get to the other ones later in the day. Oh and Sue, the blue and yellow blob on top is a frog, I think you will love it. Terry

Enlargements :?:  What enlargements  :?:   :?:   :?:
Thanks, Leni, I didn't know the pictures could be enlarged, I thought they just all came out little.   I've investigated   and played a bit with those funny bits that come up on the picture when you leave the mouse on it for long enough, and sure enough, I can get them bigger :!:  :!:  :!: .  8)
I keep telling everybody I have technophobia, but nobody seems to believe me!
Now I can't find the thread with my pictures of the bonbon dish to see how they came out!

Terry, I've seen it big now  :D and it looks wonderful. You're right, I LOVE the frog - do you know who made it?
Cheers, Sue.

Hmm...that sounded interesting, so I 'searched' for all permutations of the word 'sweat', and got nothing!  :?

Is there a technical term I could search under?    :?

Max I hope this is the turq. one you were referring to. http://tinypic.com/4qrc3m It has a lable on the bottom which is round and originally I think blue and silver, its a little worn. But it says Murano Glass made in Italy.  Terry

And I've learned that the pictures can be enlarged! I've got a whole lot of back-tracking to do here, to see things better than I was able to before. I've just never touched the odd "things" that came up on the picture, in case they produced adverts or viruses! (I don't trust things that computers do!)

This proves several points to me. Paperweights are fascinating and fun and so diverse what glass person is not going to be drawn to at least one. As we have seen the study of canes is so complex, but the wealth of information they contain boggles the mind a bit. And you can almost pick a subject like fruit or animals and you can find paperweights to satisfy. I myself really am drawn to the contemprary weights and have to ask myself sometimes, "How did they do that?"  Pictured here is an Eickholt weight dated 1992.
http://tinypic.com/4r9nc1  I never tire of looking at it. Terry

What an unusual paperweight.  I suppose you could call it architectural?

Tut!  Why did I just brush off paperweights previously as only suitable for old ladies?   :?

As you see more and more, the full glory of them starts to become apparent, doesn't it?   :)

:D   :D That's beautiful too, Terry, but I think it's more science fictiony geological. I love glass that seems to capture the power and elemental forces of nature. This one does it for me. But I'm still not really "sold" on paperweights. I like my glass BIG and in different shapes. :D
