Title: Wedgwood long tailed bird - unusual colour??
Post by: jakgene on March 19, 2012, 01:00:53 PM
I bought this rather lovely bird  recently from USA. It has good base wear, one of the early hooped Wedgwood labels, no etched mark at all.
I have just never seen another this colour before - which is why I bought it of course....!

Any comments appreciated. I am guessing it is one of the earlier  ones made - what do you think?

I think the guy you need is Martyn K  -  although don't know whether he still looks in on the GMB.
For reasons I'm unaware of, Susan Tobin's book omits any images of these 'long tailed birds' - but there have been images posted here by Susan herself I seem to recall - about 9 months ago or something vaguely similar - and feel sure if you use the Search facility you'll find something.     Most, if not all that I've seen, have some sort of speckled colourway - although looking at the darker blue band running through yours, it's very similar to one of the vase colourways which believe is decribed as 'blue/blue'.
Sorry, but can't really be of any help, but do try the search cos I'm sure there is some information available.

Glorious Jackie,  and so unusual....I wonder if Thistleblower knows anything about this colourway?
Lucky lucky you.

Thanks both of you. I was a bit concerned initially that it was a fake label - as the shape of thebird is slightly more elongated than theother moew standard one I have - but now I have the actual piece it feels and looks exactly right. I think it is just an early one.

Sorry for the delay - my notifications were going to junk mail !

Thanks Paul - nice to know others appreciate Wedgwood. Both Wedgwood and Dartington seem to have fallen out of fashion just now!

Hi Jackie   -   I'm never quite sure about Wedgwood - in terms of collectibility I mean.         Looking at some of the ebay prices for the rarer pieces, either there are a lot of unsuccessful sellers, or some people are quietly tucking it away under the bed.      But then I'm biased  -  and a fan of most Wedgwood except the animals, although I do have a few (there's too many of them, but I can see the attraction). :)

Hi Paul, I agree, most of the animals leave me cold. I have these two birds, and one topaz scotty dog, otherwise vases and candlesticks for me. I love the Sheringham and Brancaster, and also have at least one or two of all the other types aswell - although not all the colours - the purple seems hard to come by in some of the shapes.

we are a little worried about you Rosie  -  now that you are an obsessive zoomorphic collector.  -  roll on floor laughing: roll on floor laughing: big cheesy grin:  big cheesy grin:  hides behind settee:  small blue figure rushing off in embarrassed haste.         where the bothery hell have all those useful little characters gone ;)

I've only got 650 Paul....how many pieces of glass have you got?

I love the blue bird Jackie, amazingly I only have one Wedgwood bird, and that is a robin.

Sorry Rosie, didn't mean to hurt their feelings. Yours look lovely all grouped together! I just remembered I also have somewhere (packed away I think), a clear lilliput polar bear. He is cute!
Perhaps I worry that if I once start on animals I'd never stop - I already have enough problem with everything else I collect. I'll stick to my birds for the present.
