Title: Help with Orrefors signature please
Post by: glassobsessed on May 11, 2009, 06:05:25 PM
Hi, bought this Orrefors vase at auction on Saturday (my first successful reserve or absentee bid) possibly designed by Nils Landberg. The signature is not that obvious (to me), there is a lot of base wear so any help would be great.

I think the engraving might read Orrefors N U 3538/5, if so the N and the U are quite florid, if not then each may in fact be two letters in which case I am a bit lost.

The vase measures 12cm by 12 cm and 5cm deep.

Your reading of the signature is spot on - ties up with Swedish Glass Factories.

Excellent, thank you very much Gareth. This turned out to be a bit of a bargain so I am 'well chuffed' as we sometimes say in Wales.

John:

Congratulations on a nice find. It's the fifth, and, I think, last of the Dusk series, and comes in three sizes.

Thank you David, the fifth..., three sizes...., I was quite happy until you mentioned this!

Sometimes ignorance can be bliss (but not that often).

John:

Sorry! I know what you mean about ignorance. If they're out there,  I want them. Also, I should add that the number in Dusk series depends on what you include as Dusk. Those with the numbers 3538 are definitely Dusk (there are five shapes here), but 3595 is also considered Dusk by some. And there are others. A consolation for me is that there are enough around to make it possible to collect them, they can be found for relatively low amounts on occasion (when I buy them), and yet they're very attractive, imho. Good luck.

Thanks David. If you pick up any duplicates let me know.....
It can be a little daunting when you have a lovely item and then discover a host of variations that because of your 'nerdy collector type genes' (that is what I am blaming it on) result in you being compelled to keep looking for them for years.
Still, it is surprising how much you do bump into if you have time to look.
