Title: Hermanova 19347 fish bowl... a bit smaller than I had imagined
Post by: Anik R on July 07, 2011, 04:42:45 PM
I was very pleased to have won a Hermanova fish bowl, pattern number 19347... Despite knowing the bowl's dimensions (150mm x 140mm x 50mm) I didn't realize how small it really was.   I thought I was getting a fruit bowl.  (http://serve.mysmiley.net/happy/happy0055.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

A similar fish platter (19348) appears in the 1961/5 CGR.  As far as I know, the designer is still unknown.

Edit:  Sorry, but I wasn't aware that the bowl had appeared earlier on the GMB here:  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34665.0.html

The large bowl is much harder to find than the small ones. I had a small green uranium one http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=634

Possibly it was once a larger range of items, tantalising gaps in the numbering. If sold as sets of platter and 6 bowls the platter would be harder to find as well as more likely to have been broken.

Delightful piece though.

I have seen a full set, but even the little ones usually only pop up as singles, possibly because there too many sticky out bits to chip easily. The big one is more of a bowl than a platter. It's quite deep.

They are lovely, I bought my sister a set comprising a large bowl and several smaller bowls, from memory I think they were green but not uranium. Will try and snap a photo of them soon.

Ooooooo.... A set would be so much more pleasing than one itty-bitty bowl!  John, your sister is a fortunate woman.  :)

Here is a big one in pink Anik.....you could collect a multi coloured set....one of each colour as they come up for sale!!  Actually, on reflection, that could be quite nice......don't you think?

Oh Anik... no multicoloured sets ... live dangerously (http://www.debook.com/gifs/Mailsmoker3.gif)

Mind you what sort of desert is served in a fish fruit bowl service  :nk: Cod Ice cream and strawberries?

I'm going to have to hunt mine out now, as I can't remember if I had a large amber platter or a large amber bowl!
Cheers,
Meegs (who has no objection to Harlequin/multicoloured sets!

Christine said big bowl is deep, so not a platter, Now if you have a platter that would be an unknown pattern number.

You could use it for prawn cocktail or salmon mousse though Frank! :)

Having gone and out in the wind and rain and crawled under the house I found the my large example it is definitely a bowl but I did find this example of what I would describe as a small platter which I purchased with it.

Cheers

Frank,
I would say it is a flatter version of Anik's bowl.
At its highest point it is 3.5cm and approx 16 x 17cm.
I remember now that when I purchased these I had every intention of making up a mixed set but the only other small examples I've managed to find since then were a couple of green bowls and in my opinion they were too marked/damaged with limescale for the asking price so I never purchased them.
Hence the delegation to under the house!

Indeed but the available catalogue shows the desert bowl and a serving bowl, Yours is clearly neither, Earlier catalogues are need, I would not be surprised if this is a pre ww2 design.

I'd say meegs' fish is a plate or platter, not a bowl.

In the catalogue, the 19347 bowls come in four sizes: 110mm, 130mm, 150mm and 210mm.
The 19348, according to Marcus' database, is a plate.  The catalogue only offers it in one size:  280mm.  The picture in the catalogue looks more plate-ish than bowl-ish.  The CGR, on the other hand, refers to the 19348 as a bowl.  The fish in Rosie's link is 280mm and looks like a bowl.

Either way, meegs' example doesn't fit any of the sizes offered by the pre-1958 Hermanova catalogue, so I believe Frank is right in saying there are other fish in the sea.  (Oh, I'm so funny...  har-har... I think the use of uranium also pushes the date back to pre or just post WW2.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I once saw a set on Ebay which had matching salad servers - a salad set rather than a dessert set.  Or maybe the seller had just found 2 glass servers of the same colour?  Dunno, but they're lovely.

I think glass items sold in the UK are/were much more multi-purpose than those sold in the US. So if the glass matched why not buy it as a salad set.

I tried to but was outbid.  Have been looking ever since for a nice pink or blue set, green at a stretch.  (I just look for them to reassure myself that they're out there - can't actually afford to buy at the moment, unfortunately!)

But Rosie, sweetie, I don't want to be 'so now'...  I prefer being my regular fuddy-duddy 'ol self. I really don't need or desire the chaos of colour around me.   (http://serve.mysmiley.net/sad/sad0017.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

I like the idea of a multicoloured set but I am far more yesterday than now...

It turns out that since I bought my sister her large bowl and five small bowls she has gone freelance :o and picked up two more, a small pink bowl and a medium green bowl. I am pretty sure the medium green bowl is uranium though it does not show in these photos.

I concede......they are lovely as a set   ....

The little pink one could hold the extra prawn cocktail sauce, and the medium one the bread rolls....there you are, I'm at the table already!! Pass the butter please.  What, no matching butter dish??  Tcht!

I am now the proud owner of this beautiful set.  One platter (335 x 345mm at widest points) and six dishes (240 x 260mm).  The are so attractive in real life, but I'm very nervous about handling them.  They are in perfect condition - I would guess they've never been used.  The top fin of the platter has a black mark inside the glass, but that's OK.  My heart was in my mouth when I was positioning them for the photos.  I think I'm in love.  I'd love to use them but I don't think I will!
