Title: Help on ID of these 2 pieces of carnival Glass
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on July 25, 2006, 03:53:21 PM
Hi

Ist I am not sure if the 1st Opalescent bowl is carnival glass although it looks very similar to a Dugan Bowl same shape and pattern I believe, this bowl has a flower pattern to the underside which seems to have been hand painted after it was made as the paint comes off quite easily, the bowl measures 9.5 inches

The 2nd bowl should be hopefully quite easy to ID for me it measures 9 inches , not sure quite what colour it is ,looks like a pale green

The first bowl isn't Carnival - it's Dugan's opalescent glass. The pattern is known in Carnival as "Single Flower".

The second bowl is Imperial's "Pansy" with the "Arcs" exterior. The colour is their helios green which typically has a silver-gold iridescence.

Thanks Glen for you help again, the opalescent bowl does look to have been hand painted to me , can I ask what you think , the paint does still seem to flake off easily and I think would look better if the remainder was removed

Roy -

I am fairly ceertain that the decoration was factory applied.  It is considered Goofus Glass.

Take a look through this site

Gotta run, late for work ............

That would have been my response.

Dugan made a range of painted wares that they called their "Intaglio Line" - and collectors today refer to as Goofus. (Mostly the paint was applied to patterns where the design was intaglio). Gold  - and sometimes red and green  - paint, was used.

Should you remove it? It's your choice. The gold is certainly prone to chipping and flaking.
