Title: Holmegaard Kluk Kluk With Unusual Stopper
Post by: sueglass on July 16, 2008, 09:55:29 PM
Bought this thinking it was a Holmegaard Kluk, it's water stained so at the moment am trying the old Steredent trick hence the cloudiness. The pontil is ground out and polished, the odd thing is the stopper is not totally cloudy from being ground against the decanter and neither is the decanter, they both have clear bits which might seem as if it is new but there is wear to the base. Help please.

should have added the only Kluks I have seen all have ball stoppers whereas this is more of a stopper you might expect to see on an Admirals decanter, maybe it is new and has been machine ground down as the cloudiness and clear almost seem to match!

The shape doesn't look right for Kastrup or Holmegaard - so might possibly have been made by one of the other Scandi firms producing them throughout the latter half of the 20th century. In which case... I can't say for certain that the stopper is original or not. The proportions look a bit iffy, so I'd say not.

Most decanters are machine-ground around the stopper shaft and inside the bottle neck to ensure a snug fit... and possibly it prevents sticking too.

Yup - definitely looks a little top-heavy. I would have said that the original was most likely a standard ball stopper. Unfortunately, they're a total pain to find replacements for.
