Title: Could this fantastic vase be Italian?
Post by: redheat4 on August 23, 2008, 09:10:31 AM
:hiclp: Hi again, I bought this vase the other day and in the back of my mind it is shouting Italian, but I cannot find it in any of my ref. books.

It stands 20 inches (51cm) tall, it has a pontil that has been roughly ground but not polished, and has a good amount of wear to the base.

Nason & Moretti, circa fifties. And no you will probably not find it in any reference books. Took me forever to get ID on a triangular one I have.

oh dear - it is definitely inspired so I may have been a  little quick on the draw - the shape and colour are comparable but the surface treatment and the pontil mark are completely different. So reserved opinions for now...

Yes they look the same to me,maybe it's our descriptions that are slightly different rather than the vases, I bought mine last week in the Oxfam shop opposte the Angel tube station, it had a Victorian style sticker on each flat side but as they were "sticky back plastic" I removed them.

I must admit I like it, it has a feel of quality and when I bought it I would not have been surprised if it had turned out to be Venini.

silly me i only looked at the first pic and thought I spotted some surface treatment. But I completely skipped the last one with the coursely ground out pontil mark which puts it clearly in a "quickly made badly finished" category.  Let me assure you that Venini would never let anything like that pass the quality control. Their reputation as top manufacturer is based on breathtaking design and strict quality control. If you're ever in a posh place that sells Venini, handle a few pieces if they let you - you'll see what I mean.

Yes the pontil is wrong for Venini, I was talking about my initial reaction when I saw it on the shelf.

Two not-too-dissimilar cased vases in a typical Empoli caramel colour... one square and one triangular. Fairly this duo are Italian, and not Swedish as stated.

that is a fairly typical Elme colour and if Jan says it is Elme I believe him.

Ah, it's just that when I come across this colour it's always on identifiably Italian pieces.

Was just wondering if they bore any relation to the vase in question.

Jan obviously knows his onions however I noticed he's got an Oberglas vase on his site incorrectly attributed to Riihimaki.
