Title: Peachblow or Burmese?
Post by: Stargeek on January 24, 2013, 09:12:12 PM
I inherited items from my Great Aunt's estate.  I had an appraiser out to look and he indicated this is a Peach blow glass bowl.  Now I have it listed no ebay and a gentleman is telling me it is burmese.  I certainly don't want to deceive anyone.  I'm not an expert glass collector.  Can you help?

My ebay listing:

Ebay listing of what appears to be a similar item:

I have also attached photos.

It looks to be Burmese. You need to test it with a blacklight to make certain it glows & is not a Murano copy.

Both those listing kind of blur the line by using the wording 'Peach Blow Glass Burmese' as peach blow and burmese be two distinct styles.   When ebay prices get into triple digits the buyer needs to know the difference themselves because ebay is way to full of erroneous attributions.    A few minutes ago I would have said your gentleman was correct in his statement but as I read a bit online about what defines peachblow I'm less clear.

Yours is almost certainly Burmese, though I wouldn't like to say who made it.

Looks like I'll have to time travel back to the seventies to get my old black light.

I changed the listing to read burmese and removed the link reference to the other sale.

This site:

indicates that even experts have difficulty telling the difference between the two types.  I just hope someone gets it that will appreciate and enjoy it.

Stargeek, you might want to take a look at these.  They show the tri-corner bowl shape.  All note as Burmese, three note as Mt. Washington...

Thank you so much!  We'll see how the auction goes.

I agree that this is Burmese by Mt. Washington, but I can't help but suggest that research be done BEFORE the piece goes on eBay.

Actually the article says get confused, which is not the same thing at all.

Actually I did due diligence.  Sequence of events.

Item inherited Nov. 2011
Performed my research and determined as Burmese.
Nov. 2012, Paid an appraiser certified with isa-appraisers.org to evaluate along with other items and he described as Peach Bowl.
Found Ebay listing of similar item also with Peach Bowl description from what appears to be an east coast dealer.
Listed item.
Received buyer note advising it was Burmese.
Found this forum.
Based on result modified listing less than 24 hours after start of auction.

Thanks to everyone from this board who provided constructive assistance.

Paid appraisers seem to be somewhat lacking in glass knowledge it seems to me from other people's anecdotes

Absolutely correct in my experience. 95% of appraisers are general line, jack of all trades, masters of none & when it comes to glass its especially true.
