Title: Walther Muschel Question
Post by: Leni on October 01, 2006, 09:31:02 AM
I wonder if any of our pressed glass experts (Pamela?) can help me with this.  One often sees the Walther Muschel soap dish on ebay; the one with the mermaid with upraised arms and the soap dish sticking out in front of her.  Pamela actually has one on her website with the shell balanced on the base, as it was meant to be, but usually they seem to have lost their shells.

I have a green (uranium glass) shell, which looks to be very similar glass (colour and fluorescence) to my Nymphen pieces, and I am wondering if it might be a Muschel shell.  However, I can't see from the Muschel pictures whether it is the right size and shape.  Can anyone tell me what the dimensions of the Muschel shell should be?

Hi Leni  :)
I've got the green and recently also a shiny pink one - going to measure them this afternoon and returning back to you later.

it is quite large, isn't it  8)

Well, my shell isn't all that big, so I wonder if it's not the same one.  Perhaps if I posted a pic someone would instantly say, "Oh no, that's not Walther, it's a ....."

Muschel shell measures 22 cms long and 22,5 broad aproximately
it sits in the figurine in about these measures:
7 cm long and 7.5 width
difficult to explain Leni, as the shell is more than three levelled, if you know what I mean please

Gosh, mine is nowhere near big enough to be the Muschel shell, Pamela!    Mine's tiddly little 12cm x 9cm  :(

Here's a couple of pics:

I've never seen the real Muschel, only pictures.  You don't realise the size of it in a picture!  How big is the piece, overall?  It must be really big!    :o

Leni yours looks remarkably like a Davidson shell, apart from its colour. See here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6710.0.html

Thanks, Christine  :D  Looks like mine's a 'Davidsons No 1' then

How did I miss that thread?  Must have been when I wasn't well and had a few days off the board  :(

I'm not sure because as far as I know Davidson uranium glass is not green. It's like primrose pearline without the pearline bit

pity, I always forgot to have the shell pictured upside in order to make it obvious what I mean if I say it is three-levelled really. This will take a few days more

Pamela, I saw this ebay item - no. 130033950432   - and wondered if it is more like the Muschel shell?  It seems to be near enough the dimensions you said it should be    :?

Hi Leni, THAT's it - absolutely! Nice find and I wish you a bargain, if you go for it!

More on yours:
I found several other Muschel (Muscheln would be the German plural) in the catalogues today. This is what always happens to me: whenever I search for something else, I find something what I was not looking for really at present  :?
here I go:
your Muschel may also be
Inwald, 1914
issued in PK 2002-4-1/025
page 34/58 upper left, first row on the right

Glen please, may I ask you again to issue this here for us?

I cannot read the exact size of it there, BUT it is the only Muschel with 15 rays like Leni's!

The Fenne Muschel 'Ernst' of 1903-09, although very similar in oval shape, had 19 rays, and their Muschel 'Hans' had 18 and was absolutely round, not oval.

Hello Pamela - I only have Inwald 1914 on paper (not on CD). The quality is not good and the images are small, but I can try and scan a specific item.

I have looked at table 34, but I can't see a shell there. I must be in the wrong place. Help. (Also please forgive me but I am very short on time, so it may be a day or two before I get the chance to scan an image).

Glen

Dear Glen, the table is not numbered, but it is on page 34 out of 58 - upper left, first row - the one on the right

Here's the scan of the Inwald catalogue page. I've done it at exactly the size that it is on the page (there are 4 pages to an A4 sheet). So I'm sorry it looks small, but this is exactly as I have it.

Thank you for your time, Glen!
It's exactly the same issue I have got - 4 x A4 on one page - difficult to examine, but it was good enough to count the rays of that Muschel...
Thanks again

The one I was watching went for a 'Buy It Now' price of about £8 I think!  Isn't this another?  I didn't notice the seller / buyer details.   :?
