Title: Vistosi bowl - prototype?
Post by: Pinkspoons on October 14, 2010, 04:39:46 PM
Seems to be a prototype / experimental bowl from Vistosi's factory archives (I got it a while back from D&A). I'm assuming prototype because the design is a bit rough around the edges.

The body of the bowl is formed entirely from a single piece of glass that's been 'folded' in several places. At the base it is compressed flat to make the bladed foot, at the top rim it is folded to encase a ribbon of opal glass, and near to the outer rim it is folded over once again to encase a ribbon of dark blue glass. The edge of the bowl is lined with a lighter blue ribbon (not encased).

The bowl probably dates mid/late 1980s. If anyone knows the designer, or if it was ever tidied up and put into production, I'd love to hear!

I absolutely love it. This is radical design to me as it looks original in its conception.

Great thing to own

I've a small handful of 1980s Vistosi pieces in quirky post-modern shapes - I really like them. Sadly none of them are Ettore Sottsass pieces, but I'm not bewailing my lot too much.  :)

Sounds like a great thing to collect. Quirky, original, small amount available normally tracks into worth a lot.

Maybe not in our time but such is life. At least we get to appreciate them for a short while.

Just sent me off in a direction - I wonder what parts of our collections will live on for the next 200 years?
