Title: Opinion please on a labelled Murano vase
Post by: Bernard C on July 25, 2012, 04:38:43 PM
Sorry, no photos yet.   16" / 41cm vase, tall egg shaped, ground and polished base, neatly ground pontil scar, but not polished.   Blue, with white, aventurine, broadly pulled up, then twisted into spirals.

Label w. 3.5cm, h. 2.5 cm, oval, transparent plastic.    Text in black:

VETRO ESEGUITO SECUNDO
LA TECNICA DEI MAESTRI DI
MURANO
MADE IN ITALY

I'm travelling, so possibly photos at weekend.

Translation / opinions welcomed.

It wasn't made in Murano for a start. LA TECNICA DEI MAESTRI DI MURANO = the technique of the masters of Murano (or something like that) are weasel words that appear on non-Murano Italian glass. Similar ones appear on South American glass. If it was made in Murano, it would say so. Stay clear

Christine — grateful thanks.   I will leave the vase where it is.

It seems to me terribly sad that a glass artist with considerable experience and skill produces a beautiful piece like this — and then the marketing men find it more profitable to sell it as Murano lookalike rather than under its real attribution.

If you go to TK Max you will find many beautiful pieces labeled this way. The prices are amazing, but not for the purist.
