Title: Azurene cylinder vase Isle of Wight glass
Post by: chriscooper on December 10, 2011, 08:45:47 PM
Described by the seller as Isle of Wight glass 5" high the rim is uneven but looks original.
Without having a look at my Picasa album anyone want to hazard a guess who actually did make it? label on the base!

If it is NOT Isle of Wight Glass, which I am inferring you mean then the other makers I have an example of are Martin Evans of Glory Art Glass, or Paul Critchley of Diamond Isle Sculptured Glass, neither of whom seems likely.

:pb:   Third guess - Guernsey Glass - now Island Studio Glass.  I have a Pwt very similar.  Should have a three lions impressed and perhaps a black label.

Hi Ross, the seller's description said Isle of Wight glass which of course made think of Michael Harris which it does resemble. Nothing on the label leads me to believe it was made on any of the channel Islands though.
The base  is polished flat most of being taken up with a polished pontil mark with a prunt of glass in the centre rather like the flame and coach bolt design covered by the label.

:spls: The only other piece of glass I have with gold leaf - but not silver leaf, is Stuart Strathearn.  Last try.

Isle of man or Stuart . :-\

I think Stuart was a good shout jp, but since theirs was called Ebony and Gold, then presumably this isn't black enough.    By any chance did Davies take the design idea with him to the Blowzone Studio?

Well done your correct Jp it was made on the Isle of Man, but who made it?

Dont know Chris but i can give you a useless piece of information . Michael Harris invited Ray Annenberg (he of Whitefriars fame)to the Isle of man with the idea of Ray running the factory Ray and his wife Hazel went out there enjoyed it but could not take the chance of uprooting their then young family .

Nothing on the web about Island Glass is there a connection with Michael Harris I wonder?

Yes Chris did you not read my last thread its all to do with Michael Harris he got it started , if you go to the next Cambridge fair i will get Ray to tell you all about it he spent some time with Michael and was reluctant not to take it on . Ray has some good memories of it to tell .

A lot of my little azurene style animals and coloured glass animals from the Isle of Man have that label Chris........if I had seen this thread earlier, I might have guessed sooner....but there you go, I was busy...as always. :usd:
I'd like to hear the anecdotes as well JP, please can you share them with us all???

Thanks John, of course I read your reply just thought they may have been more including St Johns and with nothing coming up on google and no input again from those in the 'know' thought maybe just another obscure studio.
Probably some info in my books,
Rosie presumed the animals were St Johns Crystal? and not Island Glass, is there are a connection maybe?

Hi Chris when you said well done but who made it i thought you meant the actual glass blower not the firm . So it was Isle of Man Glass set up by Michael Harris .

Interesting the Island Glass name is precisely what he used on Guernsey as well.

It was St Johns Crystal at first , when that started to go under Michael Harris rescued it !!!! lt then became Isle of man glass !!! or Island Glass under Michael and had connections with all the other Island firms they made lots of minimals and maximals and while Ray was there he made sample Azurine Goblets with the gold or silver leaf like your vase Chris . I will ask Ray for more info at the weekend .

I can tell they were the same company by the little animals I have....now have a few extra as well.....and of coure, the Isle of Wight 'Genuine' ones.

I love them all, Isle of wight,  Island glass (IOM), and St John's Crystal.....don't mind which label as long as I like the creature.

Guernsey Glass don't appear to have any animals,  but do make very pretty 'petal rimmed' glass vases.
That is a nice vase though Chris,  I like it very much.
Rosie. :)

Thanks for this thread Chris, I now have what I know to be an Isle of Man vase - from a local Op-shop here in Melbourne. Suburb where the shop is is St Kilda - named after another remote British Island.

 8) Ross, tempted to peel off the label to see if there is a mark on the blob of glass on the base  ;D

Just received an eMail from Graham Hudson from Whitefriars.com about a pink bark vase and jug very much in the Whitefriars style with the same Island Glass label in a members {the lovely Pinky} gallery.

http://www.whitefriars.com/my_photo.php?Owner=pinky&Id=2779

Maybe time to remove the label on mine the blob of glass on the pontil mark of those two reveal a Celtic knot?

Thanks Jp and Ross for your help with this thread,
Thanks too to Graham for pointing out the link.
