Title: Boot Sale Finds...Nic,I know I'm a pest but...
Post by: ElaineB on April 08, 2007, 04:00:53 PM
...Could you look at my Boot Sale finds. We've had this vase for a few weeks and it had been suggested it may be Whitefriars but it just seemed to chunky.I'm sure it's the same as the one on your Holmegaard page. This one has no markings on it.Large polished pontil mark. What do you think?

Today I bought a decanter which seems familiar too.The stopper is completely flat on top.Pontil mark polished & much smaller than on the vase. It's really mucky inside but running my finger around it comes up clean.

I've been 'Googling' for hours but it's not much use looking when you're not sure what you're looking for :-\
Anyway Nic,Hope you have time for a wee look,
Many thanks,
Elaine ;D
P.S. Really bad outdoor pics,I know, but it's freezing cold here!

The vase looks like a Twilight colour optic rib vase by Whitefriars to me - but I'm not an expert on them. The trouble is that MANY factories have made them - on my shop site there's also one that's probably by Zwiesel (Germany) under 'European Glass'. I can say that the colour of yours doesn't look to be a Holmegaard one, though.

The Whitefriars experts will be able to aye or nay-say my initial thought. How tall is the vase?

No idea who made the decanter - Dartington, maybe? - but I do like it. :)

I'd have been chuffed at either of them as carboot finds, so well done!

Hi Elaine.  I believe the decanter (as Nic thought) is Dartington.  I've got it down as 1967, and an FT15.  Courtesy 'The 20th Century Decanter' Exhibition Samples - A. McConnell.

Hiya Max,Hiya Nic,
I like the decanter too  ;D Boot Sale was really good today.Me & my 'Wee Man' came back with lots of stuff...The decanter,2 Scheurich lava vases, some other bits & pieces..and change too! So,I'm most pleased.
Lots of sellers, few customers.I guess they must have been home eating chocolate eggs!
Many thanks again for your help and Happy Easter,
Elaine.
P.S.Uploaded a photo of the vase to Is IT Whitefriars? It was suggested it might be Swedish?

I think - but I'm not sure - that Strombergshyttan (Sweden) examples are generally signed. Hopefully someone here can verify or not.

1930s Elis Bergh examples for Kosta are definitely signed, and the shape isn't right for that either.

Dexter,
Shot in the dark here but do you think that the FT15 might refer to Frank Thrower?

FT is Frank Thrower, all his stuff for Dartington was coded FT + number

Your vase i think is whitefriars, and your decater is Dartington by Frank Thrower, i seem to remember they are makeing this decanter as part of their 40th anniversary?

Hiya Dexter,I thought that too.Feedback from IsItWF? also suggested Pattern 9094 in Twilight but went on to say these are notoriously hard to identify.Elaine

Hi Elaine, i'm no expert but there are some very clever people on this board who may have the answer, the people at the whitefriars board know their onions, they also have lots of shapes catalouged, so why not have a rootle through them and see what you think? :)

Hiya Dexter,I absolutely agree.Without the experts of these 2 boards and the archived Whitefriars calalogues I would have undoubtedly been stumped many, many times.I read the posts frequently before finally posting anything;Didn't want to ask to many silly questions :-[
Anyway,Thanks again so much for everyones help in IDing my items ;D

Just plodding through McConnell (C20 Glass), and it has your decanter. Pattern FT15 is apparently also called 'Wanted On Voyage'
