Title: Skrdlovice vases
Post by: Andy on February 03, 2007, 08:39:30 PM
Frank,
it gets better, ive got 3, I believe they are by Ladislav Palecek,
Im not exactly sure when, 70s maybe, and i believe they do(or did) same style in
more shapes and other colours, so ive got a few years collecting to go!

Yes, im sure they are still made today, id be interested in the prices from the factory shop,
although i could never go there because id spend far too much! Not too keen on all their
stuff, but some of the ranges of vases are stunning and expertly made!
I got mine from ebay, not cheap, but im happy i didnt overpay, and explain to me how the
Austrians and Germans can post a large 3kg package for about 17 euros! Its not the same the
other way around!

Hi,
All designs from 1983, from the 8318 range, which have been produced for at least 15 years, according to my catalogues, so not a small scale production.
Regards,
Le Casson

PS. Andy, German sellers can ship 10kg for €22, to European destinations. ;D

Apologies.
For clarity, Andy's pieces are all 8318 range.

Terry's fine array, from l-r and top to bottom:
Petr Hora, 8620, 1986, Petr Hora 8619, 1986,
Pavel Hlava, 7714, 1977, Jaroslav Svoboda, 7425/ 15, 1974,
Frantisek Vizner, 1976 (sorry no precise pattern number, but related items are 7626 and 7622)
another Vizner item...(did you get an exact id on this, Terry?) and Palecek.

Regards,

Marcus

Marcus, I never did get a postive ID. Since the thread is about Beranek and Skrdlovice, I noticed in my group shot the two pieces of early Beranek I have were missing.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/Muscadale/Czech/Beranek.jpg
These date to 1940 and correct me if I am wrong, but were done by Emmanuel Beranek, the founder of the firm. I am on my first cup of coffee so I hope this is right. Terry

Marcus, a huge thank you for all that information. I am busy making lables for my various collections and the information you have shared will make it very easy for me. Again Thanks Terry

Marcus,
some more of my Skrdlovice, at least i think it is, could you help with the front 3 in the photos,
left is a multicoloured ashtray, centre vase has yellow and gold skrdlovice sticker , i think a bit earlier
than some of the others, and the semi circle bowl? on the right, pretty sure its Skrdlovice.
Thanks for all your help,
Andy

ps Terry, nice collection! photos dont give a good idea of the thickness weight and quality
of Skrdlovice, i presume bottom centre is enormous!

Andy, the bottom centre one is as follows; 10 inches high, 9 inches long, 4 inches deep and weighs in at a whopping 18 pounds. It does not get moved often. Terry

The vase is Burian, 7414, 1974. the semi-circular dish by Hora 8502, 1985.
Image of the ash-tray is too indistinct to comment.

Hi Marcus,
some more photos of the ashtray, one of my favourite pieces, so would be nice to put
a name to it. It has a skrdlovice feel to it, deep amber sommerso effect, green centre,
cased in clear, with abstract cross in each side.
Maybe another Bohemian maker, my guess 80s, but i could be completely on the wrong track!
(and maybe should try new thread for it?)
Thanks again,
Andy

ps, about 3 3/4" each side, and 2 3/4" tall. 1.1kg

This is almost certainly a Pavel Hlava design for Exbor. Items like this frequently left Exbor without the acid-etched mark. This is probably from around the mid to late 1960s, judging by the colouration. If this had been predominantly red, then it would still be Hlava, but dating some twenty years later.

A few words regarding Terry’s later posted items from Beranek.
I have read, though right at this moment, I cannot remember exactly where, a comment along the lines of Beranek’s early works were poor quality, and of artisanal design, Poor quality probably was a reference to smelting difficulties, and the bubbly glass so produced.

I suggest that this is inaccurate. It is quite clear that Beranek counted among his earliest collaborator/customers, members of the Functionalist design movement,
particularly those working with Bohuslav Fuchs in Brno. At that point in time, several shops selling household fitments existed, similar to Heals in the UK, among them Krásná Jizba, Druzstevni Prace, and in Brno, AKA.

Whilst table glassware designed by Fuchs and made by the Kvetna glassworks was available, the decorative items came from elsewhere. One form of decorative  glass offered by these shops was off-hand items, with bubble inclusions and can be seen in designs by Ludvika Smrčková for Krásná Jizba, made by ČMS (Českomoravské Sklárny glassworks, formerly S.Reich)  around 1940-41. In the case of Beranek, items such as Terry’s were produced for AKA, and it is clear that interaction with AKA took place shortly after opening his business. Drahomira Fuchsová had supplied designs for glass animals, from @ 1942, but arguably the vases and bowls date to 1945. Why we cannot clearly state that they may have been earlier is that some of the pattern book exists only as photocopies, and some of these are not continuous. What we do know is that designs such as these came from Vera Lichtagová, with designs for simple vase and bowl forms being used from Drahomira Fuchs.

It is difficult to put a date on when production of these items ended, but the Spanish issue of the Glassexport catalogue of work from Škrdlovice, 1954, carries no items from this product range.

Marcus, again thanks for the information. As an added bit of info, the larger of my two pieces carries two lables. One is an oval gold foil that says Made in Czechoslovakia. The other, although in rough condition is a shield shape and looks like a large K USA K with Art Cut Crystal below. Obviously an importer lable, but of interest. Terry

Saw that, like mine better because it has the stamp <hehehe>. I found a much larger square vase the other day on a market in Berlin, exactly the same as my ashtray, also with full markings. If I remember correctly the seller wanted 120 euros for it.

Fischer of Heilbronn.... the glass expert there knows his Zweibelen, but jmho, the estimate is very high, unless this is a signed limited edition item, and even then, Burian is not in the same league as some of the other Skrdlovice designers. I'd be wanting signed items from Vizner and Hlava at that kind of money.

Marcus

I have a vase, which is incredibly similar to the ashtrays that Andy & Ivo have.
What do you think? It is marked to the underside with 11/a.

The internal colour is blue, then amber.

TIA for you opinions.

Della,
no doubts in my mind this is Pavel Hlava for Exbor circa 1969 ;D
I'll give you a fiver for it ;)

Hi Andy,

I could give you a big hug!! Thanks  ;D

It is only probably worth a fiver as I banged it on the cupboard and it now has a tiny fracture on one of the corners  :'(  No glass missing and the damage cannot be felt, but it is there nonetheless.
