Title: Glen, do you get clear Carnival Glass objects?
Post by: BJB on May 14, 2006, 01:38:37 PM
Hi Glen,

I have bought this weird item, which looks like a cross between Cleopatra's needle and Blackpool tower (can't spell Eiffel), and altough it is clear glass is has a carnival sheen to it, which shines up blue, green, purple and yellow. The only way to descibe it is to say it looks like petrol on water.

The weird thing, with what looks like writing down the front, but I can't make it out.

Weird thing trying to show the colouring.

I wonder if it was a paperweight, even though it is hollow!

( had a VERY rude comment about it from 18 year old daughter  , didn't know she knew such words  )

It is lightly iridised. Perhaps the 'letters' are poorly moulded Hieroglyphics, models of Cleopatra's needle were mass produced in a variety of materials - mostly cheap souvenir quality circa 1878 and again in the 20's as Egyptmania developed. Some are good copies others are just stylised fantasies seemingly put together from memory or even a verbal description. I used to get quite a fe through my hands when I had my shop. I still have a nice one made from various coloured stones and marble.

They could also be mdae in US as another obelisk is in Central Park, it is different to the one in London. You should be able to find images with Google and then decide which one it was modelled after, if either - that will give a clue to origin. Or not

Yes there is clear Carnival Glass. It is clear (crystal) base glass with a pastel iridescence that shows light pink, green gold tones. (For information, marigold Carnival is also on clear base glass, but the iridescence is "orange").

It is not often seen, but Imperial, for example, did make some clear Carnival. If the iridescence is frosted, then it becomes white Carnival.

I haven't seen an item like yours before - and it's fascinating. What a super "find".

Hi Glen,

It is really unusual, and when the light catches it right, also very pretty.

It was pouring with rain yesterday, and this one still seemed to "glow".

I don't think I can keep it though, what with Vicky asking if the hollow middle was where the batteries go    . She must get it from her Dad

Mosser makes it too and calls it "crystal carnival"

Barbara - what a great jelly mold it would make :P

Glen - is this an example of 'clear Carnival' gold tone that you refer to?  It looks kind of Bohemian - four lobes on a square base - with a goldish irridescence. (not a very good pic. I'm afraid but the light is fading)

Anne, I would call that a pale marigold really. The iridescence on clear Carnival is more of a mix of pale pink, gold and maybe green. Very light and delicate - but with several colours showing rather than just a light golden (orange) effect.

I've seen one or two similar vases to yours before, and like you, I have felt they were Czech. There are some very similar ones shown in the Rindskopf catalogues.

Honestly Anne, you and Vicky would make a great pair

Glen, do you think it might be UK or "foreign" and more 1920 than 1880?

It's certainly a talking point

Well, pretty sure that it's not 1880. But beyond that I really do not know - I haven't seen anything quite like it before. It's certainly not USA Classic Carnival. It isn't UK Carnival. I don't know of anything in that colour / iridescence by the major European makers from the main era of Carnival manufacture.

There certainly are novelties in Carnival, and some strange things such as Buddhas and other unusual items. I'll see if I can find out anything more.

Thanks Glen, you really are a star  :D

I just wish I could hand it to you so you could have a really good look, instead of having my pathetic photography, David Bailey I ain't

Why is it the dreadful items look fantastic when infront of the camera, and the wonderful items look like the cheapest dross? Who ever said the camera never lies sure did

Barbara may I use your photo to see if we can find anything out about it? I'd like to ask the wwwcga members if they've seen anything like it before.

Hi Glen,

Of course you can use the photographs, just remember to tell them they're mine and not yours, as I don't want to cause you any embaressment

I will try and take a better one tomorrow, now the new kitchen is finally finished. Never again! I couldn't stand the mess or smell of gloss paint  ( Only trouble is the washing machine has sprung a leak all over the new floor)
Just need the rest of the house re-painting now, why is it that when one room is nicely done the rest looks a state? Its like the Forth bridge.

Hi Glen,

I've got an even better idea, if you could let me know your address, I will send you the item and then you could do a better investigation, and my kids wont be able to make rude comments!!

Hi Barbara   hang on to it for a little while longer (ignore the cheeky comments   ) Let me see if I can get any flicker of recognition from any other Carnival collectors in wwwcga. I'll report back ASAP.

Hi Glen,

OK I will, I'm just pleased that me little dears have left Primary school, as I dread to think what the teachers would think if they still had to do a Daily Diary

Hi Barbara, I am going to risk being "Cafe'd" with my next comment, but it's worth it. Trust me............

My late brother in law used to be an avid collector of antiquarian books - when his children were young, one of them wrote in her school book (about "Daddy"):

"My daddy has a lot of dirty books".

Well Barbara - looks like this one is proving to be another mystery with which to enrich our lives! I haven't received so much as a flicker of recognition from the Carnival community (I mean Carnival Glass collectors and not the people who run the dodgems and sell toffee apples   )

Sorry not to have been able to help more - but at least you have a mysterious, intriguing and challenging piece of glass.

Hi Glen,

It is a mystery and a real talking point!

Another glass collector thought it might be "Oban" (I think that is what he said, but we had been on the vino quite a lot  ) who were either an Austrian or German company, but thats the closest to anyone giving an opinion about it and I was not in full control of my faculties

I think he's thinking of Oberglas (Austria). They certainly did make lightly iridised glass (we've written about it here on the GMB). I'll see if I can find it in their catalogues when I have a mo. Thanks for the lead, Barbara.

Glen

(PS was it good vino?)

Hi Glen,

You are right, I'm so pleased that YOU know what I mean, as no one else seems to

Apart from Ron, who stopped dealing some 20 years ago and is not up on the more "modern" glass, there are no others who are interested in glass at all. Its good when buying at auction and the local antique centres as I have had some lovely bargains, but also see some glaring clangers. I have offered some advice if I know the dealer, but most don't seem to appreciate it especially if its "Whitefriars"

As for the wine  we started off on the decent red but by the time we finished we were on the awful (but very cheap, and all the local shop which was open had!) Lambrusco, but were so far gone it didn't taste at all bad
