Title: Is this a Scottish P/W or copy?
Post by: malcmat on October 29, 2011, 10:51:19 AM
Hi, could this be a Scottish p/w or could it be a copy. I am a  beginner with p/ws and  imho it does not have the usual quality of the usual p/w. Its 2.75 inches across and 1 inch tall. The Cains and decoration inside look to me as having no depth and look squashed. No ware on base and rough broken pontil mark.           Any comments for this beginner would be great.
Many thanks
Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

Looks to me like a 100% genuine Strathearn star. Many Strathearn weights are, IMHO, quite rough and ready, and of modest quality.  There are some very neat and attractive ones too, of course: I once bought over 400 Strathearn weights, and the quality varied wildly, even amongst the weights with a Strathearn label.

I don't think there would be any profit to speak of in copying these low end Strathearn weights, so I don't think anyone has done so.
