Title: Help Please is this Vase Iittala, Sklo Union, Whitefriars or????
Post by: JC on October 22, 2012, 12:59:50 AM
Hi to all.
I am needing some help identifying the maker of this clear glass vase. I originally thought  Iittala possibly Pinus designed by Tapio Wirkkala. I think I have ruled that out  as I have not found a  match. It measures approx 8½ inches high.
Thanks for any help that can be given
I know it is preferred that we use Yobunny for our  pics here, but I am having all sorts of problems atm trying to get them to upload. Its just not happening and I keep getting error messages. So here they are from my Picasa Album

Don't recognise it but I believe not Sklo Union or Whitefriars.

The quality of the finish doesn't look very Iittala either. Sorry about that.

Very nice looking vase, looks Scandinavian at first glance, I guess it could also be Czech but not Sklo Union as it is not pressed.

Quite a distinctive design, like melting ice, sooner or later somebody will spot another.

I think this piece might be German. Several German makers produced patterns like this somewhere between the 60's and 80's. If the quality of the finishing isn't great, I would tend to think of smaller Scandinavian or German makers. Walther for instance could have made that. Unfortunately, ID'ing German glass is difficult, as resources are far and few.

PS I've attached a few German Peill vases to show the style similarities from German glass from that period, though yours is most likely not by Peill.

Hello Julie, we actually prefer you to add your pics directly to the board as attachments. The GlassGallery (that which you erroneously called Yobunny - Yobunny is in fact my business and just provides the space for the GlassGallery :)) ) is now a secondary area for the board's image storage which pre-dates when we could add pics directly onto the board itself. It also houses a variety of research project pics and members' personal glass collection albums.  If you need help with adding pics either onto the board or to GlassGallery please feel free to email me directly for help. :)

Hi Julie,  this reminds me very much of the 'glacier' pattern from Hoya Crystal, and when I needed help in identifying a piece of glass I had that I thought might be Hoya, I posted a picture to them on email and within two days had a wonderfully informative reply telling me more than I could ever have hoped for about the piece in question.
I wrote to the person below, Yumiko Uekado by the email address given.

It might well be worth your while writing and sending a picture of your lovely vase and if it is Hoya, you will get a lot of information about it from them.
If it isn't they will tell you, and it could be that they might even tel lyou who the maker is if they do know.
Best of luck,
Rosie.  :)

Hi Julie,  I have done some research and discovered that Hoya Crystal has now terminated their domestic crystal business and are concentrating solely on medical optics.
Further research shows that they were badly affected by the tsunami in Japan, and this meant that they spent vast amounts of money helping and supporting staff who were affected and other local charities.
Judging from the reply I had from them a few years ago, I am not the least surprised at this level of compassion and I am pleased to see that their selflessness has been rewarded by an upturn in their business since they decided to concentrate on the medical Optics.  They converged with Pentax and they now have a new website which can be contacted if you wish to see if there is anyone still in the company who can help with the information you need on their previous domestic crystal products:

http://www.hoya.co.jp/english/business/business_06.html

The contact address is at the very bottom of the page on the Right hand side.

Good luck!!
Rosie.  :)
