Title: Ysart,Vasart, Strathearn, Paperweight? ID = Strathearn closepack
Post by: BJB on August 31, 2006, 01:34:53 PM
This came in a lot I bought the other day, and I thought it was a Strathearn closepack paperweight.

But later I was told that it was;

a) an early Ysart because of the base,

and then

b) the fact that the dome is not very tall means it is a Vasart

and now I am wondering was I right or is the so called "experts"?

Looks like a Scottish Strathearn closepack to me.

Defintely one of the thousands of regular production Strathearn closepack weights, made from 1964 to 1980.

I can see why somebody could think the base is "like early Vasart" as it seems to have some basic grinding. However, the grinding (if that is what it is) is not consistent with the usual early Vasart style as it appears to radiate outwards all around the central pontil mark. And the pontil mark seems to be fire-polished, which is something that was quite typical for Strathearn weights but, as far as I know, was not done for "early Vasart" items.

Vasart (both early and later) and Strathearn domes came in a whole variety of sizes, from quite low to surprisingly high.

Thank you very  much KevH for helping to clear this up, and for giving me the "ammo" for the return!

It's because I am female and younger ( a mere 42  :wink: ) that of course I only have one working brain cell which I use on special occasions   :shock: and to top it all I'm interested in glass........
