Title: Only 50 Royal Brierley Paperweights all over the world???
Post by: incazzatonero on October 31, 2012, 01:59:31 PM
On Ebay I have found:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/380496835107;jsessionid=54E248172EBCA6EDFDAEEE88863531BC?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.de%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D380496835107%26_rdc%3D1
or
#380496835107.
Are there any precise bibliographic references, which can confirm that only 50 Paperweights were made?

Well I've got one,the trouble is I've never seen or heard of a RB weight like this,I may be wrong,it does happen sometimes ::),but this might be a case of 'jumping labels' :o ;D ;D

I thought there were lots around (I've owned several), and some at least looked like they were imported from Murano.

World Paperweights: Millefiori & Lampwork, by Robert G. Hall, pages 93 & 94.

Bob had contacted the company about their paperweight production and was told "... only fifty paperweights had been made ..." and "There would not be any more produced ...".

I was about to add that it is very similar to the Royal Brierley weight shown in the Murano project on my website. Then I looked more closely, and realised it is actually the same paperweight... :-[

Actually, I did not say that!

I simply quoted from what Bob Hall had said in his book about what the folk at Royal Brierley had told him. And what I quoted was in response to the original question:

I would not be surprised to find that there are plenty of Royal Brierley weights around, but since they used Murano canes they may not have been spotted for what they are. The use of Murano canes and the label being lost is something that Bob also commented on his his book as being a possible confusion for many folk.

I assume you are all talking about properly marked millefiori weights by RB.  If not I have one of 50 - and I can't imagine that can be correct.

Funnily enough, I picked up this one recently, thinking it may be Scottish and it has very similar canes to your millefiori canes Keith... Brierley imported them from Murano didn't they? This may be an Italian weight, but it has a fire polished pontil rod mark not a flat polished base, which I would more expect from a Murano weight...

My understanding of the info in Bob Hall's book (see Reply #3) was that Royal Brierley had trouble with the compatibility of the Murano canes worked in their own glass mix ... meaning that Royal Brierley made the weights with millefiori canes sourced from Murano.

Mine has what looks like a polished pontil mark and is etched Royal Brierley, the canes are similar to your pwt Robert.
