Title: Glass Skyscraper for interest and any info you can give. ID = Nachtmann (maker)
Post by: rosieposie on December 24, 2012, 01:41:03 PM
This is a very detailed Glass Skyscraper model, made by 'Magic Cristal'

The detail is amazing and every building has a different pattern on it.
There is even a little Yacht on the shoreline at the base.

Any furthr information about the maker and why this might have been made would be very much appreciated.

Perhaps as advertising for prospective customers?

Ross

PS.   Why are the photos so small Rosie?

Hi Ross,

I will try to load bigger ones on Boxing day.  I tried 700x300,  but they wouldn't load. :(
I wondered if it might be an advertising giveaway or even an architect trophy.  It is very high class crystal and very finely detailed,  not a cheap bit of tat like the cottages.
I know that Magic Cristal are West German and they make classic car models in glass,  but I have never seen anything like this before....I just HAD to have it! :)

Magic Crystal was a product of Hofbauer Crystal c1951-c1991 name was taken over by Nachtmann who continued to produce various sculptural items in the MC range. Except Hofbauer Crystal appears to be a trade mark of Anne Hütte Bleikristall, Windischeschebbach, Bavaria who folded in 1992 which ties up with 1991 closure. From 1994 Concorde Kristallglas GmbH were in their old address and presumably continuing Anne Hütte brand, despite Nachtmann having some tmś... well it gets confusing...

Maybe move to German glass for some unravelling, you could contact Nachtmann. Not supposed to be good on answers but if you can locate division which does design http://www.nachtmann.com/en/b2b/ they might own up to this piece.

As to the Hofbauer name, well address of Annahütte was Hermann-Hofbauer-Strasse 6.

Nachtmann took over the failing Annahütte including their retail brands like Hofbauer and Magic Crystal. Nachtmann itself was taken over by the Riedel group and they run it as a brand name. Not so complex @ all.

Thank you both Frank and Ivo for so much useful information....I will carry on trying to find out why this piece was made and if it was a trophy for an event or a commemorative for the opening of a new building.... the search goes on!

If you could just tie this stunning piece to an actual building it would be great. I look forward to seeing the next set of pictures. Are there any numbers or words in the design ? Not makers but any building number etc that may help. It's narrowed down to a shoreline at least  ;D  ;D. I'm green with envy  !!

New larger pictures.

There are no markings of any sort Pete, except for the Magic Cristal label.
It was sold as Marcolin,  I knew it wasn't,  but I collect glass buildings, so just had to have this.
It is AMAZING!
Rosie.  :)

Labelled or marked?

The only label is the Magic Cristal one mentioned earlier Frank, and there are no marks or numbers....not even on the buildings.
I have written to them to ask if they know what th building is and why it was made.

In the meantime Anne....thanks a bunch!!  I love the way you are saying 'Have a Mooch'!  There are thousands of them there....but I have made a start....with Germany and the Netherlands first!! ....Oh the d**ting will just have to wait!!

Rosie, the skyscraper site has a detiled Search facility (not too easily noticed) whih permits input of highest and lowest height parameters in metres.

So if you count the number of floors (sets of windows etc.) and take 4 or 5 metres as a likely height per floor, you could narrow down the search to just a few hundred.

Hey Kevin,  THANKS!!  What a useful bit of info,  I will do that and see just what I can find out...I will make sure that if I find out ANY info, you will all be informed....promise.
In the meantime,  I feel so lucky to have this piece of glass.

Heh heh heh I thought you'd like that site, Rosie! It looks like a regular goldmine of skyscraper info!

Kev, well done with the search thingie... I saw there was one but was outfaced by having to know the heights... good idea to use a formula like you suggest. :)

With so many crunched together bits and a sailing ship I would look Dubai-wards

skyscraper site is neat but seems to be a LOT might not be there.... looking at Bangkok, mostly post 1990 but I was there pre 1990 and was stunned by many of the buildings I saw there. Could not match Dubai

Hong Kong and Dubai were one of my first thoughts as well.  Haven't seen anything like mine on the site you mentioned Anne,  but AliBaba have a site that make trophies in glass for large companies, so I am writing to them at the moment. I will let you know what they say... if they reply!

Can I throw Singapore into the mix. Think we might be looking for the impossible but it would be great to see it worked out.

Good news and bad news.....

Alibaba did answer my email and said it was not one of the pieces that they make, and only sell in minimum lots of 500 to companies for promotional givaways.  I think they thought I was asking to buy one more!! So they were good enough to answer and I am now plagued with emails about all their promotional goods!!

Nachtmann have just answered  my email with the news that it was one of theirs,  but the molds were broken ages ago as the product was discontinued. The contact was Michael Meier should any of you ever wish to ask Nachtmann a question about their glass.

So I now know who made it,  but not why it was made or if it was a fantasy piece.  But I do know that it is relatively old and will be quite rare, and so I am satisfied with that...  for now.
