Title: Uranium glass geode

Any ideas who might have made this please?  Large oval shape geode with an off-centre oval opening thickly cased in yellow which glows like crazy with our without a u.v. light.  Almost 1.9kg.  Lovely quality.  My guess is Italian, but would welcome any comments.

I track yellow vaseline glass daily for the past 14 years, and I have never seen any yellow vaseline glass coming out of China.  I have only come across two pieces of green uranium glass and one yellow piece that have come out of Japan.  I know that there was/is a very limited amount being made in Japan, but it mostly has been snapped up by the Locals in Japan before it ever makes it to other locations.  The yellow piece from Japan was a leaf-shaped ashtray, that came in a four piece harlequin set, like for a bridge game set.  The color is very similar to Cambridge's 'pistachio' yellow.  It took me several years before I saw two sets, both with original paper labels  (but I digress).  Your piece is most likely Italian, 1960s or 1970s.

The internal bowl part seems to be offset - it seems to be beautifully polished at the edges - far too good for contemporary mass-produced Chinese, in my opinion.

Thanks for the thumbs up folks.  Italian 60's-70's sounds good to me.  :thup:

It is beautifully made and kind of special with the offset centre, but I haven't seen anything remotely like it, and because it is in such pristine condition just thought it might be modern day production.   

Just as a matter of interest, does anyone know which other countries, if any, are still producing uranium glass, or in the recent past?

I know it is being currently produced in Japan.
One of the students at the Conference in Edinburgh last October had got hold of some - with which she made a cast glass troll. She then put multicoloured feathers and a sort of dreamcatcher-y thing on it's head for hair.
It was a comment on the stupidity and ignorance of using so-called "legal" designer drugs - the consequences of which are completely unknown.

The vaseline and turquoise combo remind me of Cenedese(Murano).

Uranium glass was still being used in the Czech Republic and the USA. I also believe it's being used in Russia; some of the herds of "Murano" horses seen on ebay and in "antique centres" contain it. Adam A has used it, so has Richard Golding.

I agree that your dish is Murano.

Agree Murano, probably Cenedese. Here's a similar one, not quite as nice but more typical.
