Title: Sometimes even I get to score...Zelezny Brod Glass figures
Post by: Bonsaismurf on January 25, 2011, 01:34:49 PM
I scored big time last Saturday night. Me and some buddies were cruising the "Net" (I was all alone come to think about it) and I laid eyes on these gems that turned out to be pretty hard to get. I know they're blokes but still kinda exotic, being from another country and all. Anyway, long story short they eventually came home with me and I had a go at them with a pair of rubber gloves and some detergent (hey, they're OLD!!!)

Just showing off...(more images at the blog (http://www.bohemiabloggen.blogspot.com))

Best Regards
Emil

I was wondering where the message was going. Then I saw them. You are so lucky to have brought them home.

Good news - ZBS design Miloslav Klinger mid 50ties
Bad news - not necessarily old, might be also very recent.

Heya ppl!

Glad you like them!

Jindrich,

I'm confident they're old. If you take a look at my blog they still have the Bohemia Glass label from that time. They also came in their original Leerdam style boxes with hand written text on each box explaining which figure goes where (like "Trumpeta", "Myslivec", "Buben" etc.). The foam rubber in the boxes has turned to powder which also gives a clue about their age. Since there was no hunter in my set it seems the auctioneers had the boxes mixed up  :thud:
Thanks for the heads up though!

Best Regards
Emil

Great figures Emil, they seem to be vintage pieces over 30 years old maybe more. I think Jindra was making the point that they are not always old... A lucky find still and the boxes sound interesting too, perhaps you could post a picture of one if possible? It is pretty rare to find these as a group, at least I have not been lucky enough to find one!!

Robert,

Here's a shot of the box, not the best photo in the world though. There's also a note on the back of each box. There was tape around each box which was a bummer.

The box is almost as fascinating as the musician...  I really do think you were extra fortunate to get the figures with the boxes.  How wonderful for you!  :)

P.S.  I really do like all your figures with the exception of the 'clown' with the blue-button eyes.  Clowns scare me.  :spls:

Yeah, I like the boxes as well. They add another dimension and some "depth".

Btw, a couple of months ago I found an angel from ZBS in the same style as these but that one had a ZBS logo instead of a polished pontil. Any ideas if those are new or old?

Sorry, no pics but it was an angel with blue body holding a candle. It had white wings and a "clownish" face.

What a totally SCRUMPTIOUS Angel that is Emil....thank you for letting me see it :kissy:

When you say it is on your desktop,  do you mean it was on top of your desk, or on the desktop publishing programme?? :ow:

Have you still got it?  :X:

Will you be selling it if you have?? :X:

I have checked my shelfs and found four guys.
I can only guess the age, and absolutely sure is that the robber at the right is younger than 1970 when he first was published the popular children story about him and his family. I would say late 70ties when the story was the most popular.

Sorry Rosie, the image was on the computer desktop, not on top of the desk the computer is on unfortunatly. The angel itself was sold by a local antiques dealer for 82 Euro, not to me though.

@Jindrich: Nice figures! Does the quality of them stay roughly the same from when they came into production to the contemporary ones?

Bet Regards
Emil

Hi Emil,
it is my biggest worry, the recent pieces are exactly the same as old. Having them boxedn in old labeled paper boxes is the big win.

Thanks for the support. One of our cats decided to have a fit and ran like crazy through the apartment, up on the couch and took a giant leap and landed on the dresser and slid right into them. He's still alive so I have to cancel any requests for door mats and such...I got the figures for 16 Euro each, so moneywise it's not a big deal, but in every other aspect it's a disaster (at least for me).

It's a disaster for all of us Emil...when one of us loses a piece of glass, we all grieve.

However much I love cats, when they decide to do a 'wall of death' around the house for no apparrent reason, it can be a worry!!!.................yours is very lucky to still be alive though!!

Emil, I really do feel bad for you -- and you were so enthusiastic about getting these figures.  How horribly sad.  What a pity.

It is old glassblowers tradition to eat dogs and cats, cooked in cooling furnace with garlic. I see that underestimating of old blowers skills is not rational.

They are fantastic, aren't they?! I've seen them in CGR as well, as Irecall it it was in one of the later issues (like post -85). I have no idea wether these four are old or not, but recent czech glass is very rare in Sweden although some of the enameled red Egermann-ExBor type of glass have started to pop up on swedish eBay lately. Btw, I their from Hamlet? I bought them at an auction and there were seven originally but two was broken to begin with and one didn't make the shipping unfortunatly. These figures are FRAGILE and will loose a hand or head if you look at them hard enough...

Best Regards

Lovely pieces Emil. You will have to guard these ones very carefully from damage!!! The last story was soooo sad. The characters are from different Shakespeare plays..... Although British, this is not my knowledge area. I am pretty sure that the beer drinker is a character called Falstaff, from several plays including Henry the IV pt 1. The second I am not so sure, it may come to me. Could the African figure be "the moor" Othello? The fourth figure is usually called Shylock, a Jewish character.... Hopefully others may supply more details.. These figures are great, I like the diversity, I even saw some American football players I thought were great the other day... imagination is the limit I guess for these in terms of design! As a collector there would be so many to aim for,
