Title: Hello from a Newbie
Post by: Tony G on January 20, 2012, 11:05:31 PM
Hi All,
just thought I would say hello as a brand new registrant (?). I'm interested in paperweights of all sorts but mainly collect Whitefriars. Is it the done thing to post what I might think are interesting weights just for the fun of sharing?

Cheers

Tony

To get the most exposure you should look at and post to http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,42591.0.html where there are heaps of facinating photos.  The paperweight section works well for specialist questions.

Hi Tony and welcome to GMB. DO you have anuy of the Whitefriars transfer weights as I understand only about 127 were made. Do you have Brian Slingsbys super booklet listing Whitefriars weights as this is really useful and informative.

Hi Dave,
yes Ive got Brian's guide book. The wife bought it for my last birthday and it's the best thing since sliced bread for Whitefriars paperweights!!

I have two of the same 1972 Munich Olympics ceramic transfer weight nos 16 and 30. Bought one for £7.48 and got two in the parcel as the seller seemed to think the second (with a small nick) wasn't worth bothering with!!!

I'm struggling to reduce my pictures to the size that can be posted, any tips?

What's your speciality and why the particular interest in the ceramics? Are you after anything in particular?

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony,
although the Olympics and Silver wedding weights were made using transfers, the attached picture shows the type of weight I was referring to and these picture weights are easily identifiable as they have the Whitefriars button in the base.

Hi Tony, noticed the price of the whitefriars angels have dropped a lot recently. Any comments as to why. Regards Roger.

Hi Roger,
not sure what they used to go for but I tend to value them based on numbers sold. The Host of Angels had the biggest issue at 1000 ( source: Brian Slingsby's Guide). I was asked for some advice by a seller recently and suggested £150. It sold on e-bay for £163 which doesn't seem too bad for that big an issue. There have been quite a few about recently on e-bay. When you think that the Christmas Bell had 258 issued, its value at circa £400 is a lot higher but there again you very rarely see them on the market.

Still, to my mind, this kind of makes the really rare items and unique items seem undervalued. There are quite a few unusual weights that were not limited, that aren't really appreciated.Try the link below. Hopefully it will work to show a P1 with a date cane that I believe was only officially used in the "Bell, Flag and Eagle "weight.

Cheers

Hi Roger,
talking of Christmas weights and values. What do you think these unique beauties might be worth?

Hi Tony

I think the answer is they are worth what someone will pay for them (which would be a fraction of a penny as scrap glass, but a lot more as a collectable paperweight!) - did I see these at Christies recently?  An intriguing issue is the difference between paperweights being rare, and the prices that they can fetch: the two aspects are not always closely linked.

I think that in general, the prices of different makes of paperweights rise and fall as buyers enter and leave the market. Whitefriars weights in general are not fetching the prices that they did 5 years ago - whereas Perthshire prices seem to be higher. It does not require many new collectors to drive prices up for a time.  And if significant new money enters the market (eg Russian and Chinese collectors recently) then collectables that mean something special to those countries can be expected to go up significantly - and have been doing so.

Hi Alan,
your quite right everything is subjective. Things that are beautiful will attract interest as will rare items, even ugly things like the Alfa Romeo SZ car (subjective again). I'd rather keep values out of the discussion but admit I opened up the subject after being asked a question.

For me the main interest is in the collecting, followed by the sheer artistic skill and the historical significance. I only got into Whitefriars paperweights through an interest in their general glass. The fact that their range was more limited than some other makers was an attraction, as we all know that assembling a serious collection can be very expensive.

I think Perthshire weights are superb and technically excellent. I have an odd weight of most manufacturers but cannot afford to start another collection due to the pure cost. However if I ever did, it would probably be Perthshire. I have been on the look out for a copy of a Perthshire reference book at a reasonable price. Any pointers?

Cheers

Tony

PS yes, you did see those weights at Christies. They seem to have less idea about paperweights than a lot of regional auctioneers.

If we are having a little discussion about values because of what I said about whitefriars prices dropping recently I suppose its similar to other stuff going in and out of vogue. My wife has a collection of Hornsea jugs but they are only worth half what they were 10 years ago. Brown furniture has dropped a lot in price also, and brassware, worth more in scrap value.
No, I wondered if there were any specific reason, but I guess not.
Gold is going out of fashion you know//// anybody want to sell me some at half price?
Tony the two weights you have there are lovely weights, the partridge one being quite a bit more expensive I would feel. Couldn't give you a price through the message board though, doesn't seem the correct thing to do.          I tend to like weights that are pleasing to look at and also look at the work hours put into them.
 Regards Roger.
See you at Cambridge maybe, winter blues here also.
