Can anyone tell me why this ordinary looking strathearn paperweight sold for nearly three thousand pounds?

A mistake perhaps?  A couple of bid-sniper programs, with mistakes in the upper limits / no upper limits, bidding against each other?

As the bids were within seconds of the end time, probably snipes that were set up before the final sensible bids were made where in both case they forgot to put a decimal in - so £29.60  became £2960.   I know the sellers so I have sent an email to ask if they are holding the buyers to the deal!

Standard, but nice, Strathearn it is. That the bid came from a newby with no feedback tells you everything. I wouldn't take the bid seriously. The "winner" has been a member since February 2004 and has never won or sold anything and has zero feedback. My guess is that it's just a prank bid. Or a typo on the part of the buyer.

Or maybe, if it is a real bid and since the "winner" is from Luxemborg there's an awful lot of money laying around in that tiny place. If the "winner" is serious, then it might be a matter of him/her thinking and insisting (erroneously) that the weight is something it isn't. The sellers can be easily contacted because they are British paperweight dealers with a sales website of their own. I'd love to ask Helen or Alan in a few days if the sale went through.

thats happened to me before, it took me over 3 months to get my ebay final value fee back

If only Strathearns would sell for £3000.....

I know the seller, and it seems that two people making last minute bids both suffered finger trouble, and missed out the decimal point.  In this case ebay credited the final value fee very quickly.  Their advice was for the seller to file a non- paid item dispute, which both parties  then settle by agreeing not to proceed with the transaction.

It really is a small world, isn't it? Something like that happens and we get the inside story in just a few days. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
