Title: Scandinavian or Murano?
Post by: ElaineB on February 19, 2007, 12:03:48 PM
Can anyone help me ID this vase?
It has a ground and polished pontil mark and is very heavy. It seemed Scandinavian (probably just due to the icy colours) but I'm not so sure.Anyone?

Hi Elaine, have you looked hard for a signature, it looks a bit Flygsfors, by Paul Kedelv.

Hiya Dexter,I thought that too and searched hard for some kind of signature or mark but there's nothing there. It's the next item to be sold..with or without a signature.I just don't want to misrepresent it.Anyway,my beloved AVeM bowl has just gone for a few pence under £70 so I'm feeling pretty cheerful about the cash.Hopefully,I'll make a few quid from this one too.All the best Dexter and many thanks again for your help,Elaine.

What's the base like?  Does it have a little concave pontil mark?  It looks like some Italian pieces from about the 1950's with that triangular clear base...

Edit: Whoops just re-read your initial posting properly!  Ok, I'd say it's 1950's Italian then. Maybe Javier can help.   :)

Hiya Max,Yes it does have the concave pontil mark but it also looks like the base itself has been ground.I started to lean towards Italian because I felt that it didn't have the fine execution that even organic Scandinavian has.Not that I'm saying Murano/Italian is sloppy..I love Murano! ;D

Then it'll be interesting to hear what Javier says, I'm only using some vague information tucked away in my head somewhere, he should know one way or the other.  :)

Colour combination doesn't look Murano like to me for a vintage piece. Looks more like a modern piece and would think either Scandi or possibly one of the emerging countries (good phrase that).

Paul could be right, but this is the style I'm thinking of:

I don't think the vase in the link is modern, as I've had a similar one in my hands and there was a lot of age related wear (and a chip!) to the base.  The bulbous lip to the top rim is a defining factor for me, although that's not to say that folk *somewhere* wouldn't copy it.  I'm not sure if they'd go so far as to put a concave pontil on the base though.   ???

I have noted that the base on the link above looks better quality than the grey one in the initial posting.  Copy or not?  I don't know.  :-\

The shape reminded me of Maastricht - but I might be way off so don't take that as gospel.  p. 133 of Lesley Jackson's 20th C Factory Glass - Krystaluniek series, is similar in that it has the three sided base and thick rim, but the one illustrated has swirls of transparent blue and purple - very different to Elaine's in colour then. ???

We're on Ivo territory here!

Doesn't really matter what this is anymore!! Slightly peeved.Took it to a boot sale in Edinburgh, hoped to make a few quid, wobbly old man picks up a bowl, drops it on said vase and takes a huge chunk out of it.Looks at me and says 'oops'.He then wandered off muttering to himself.
Hmm,some days are just too complicated for big explanations.

Can't see the photo.  When I click on the link it comes up with "file doesn't exist".  this is the second time of late that this has happened to me....I can see that eveyone else is not having a problem! Any ideas why?

I get the same message Emmi, anyway poor elaine!! if that happens in a shop you are expected to pay for the damage, but what can you do at a boot sale? i suppose it would'nt look very good chasing an old man around a bootsale brandishing a broken vase.

I did have one chap drop something, and I just stuck my hand straight out and said "that's £5".  And he paid up and slunk away...
